Trojans roll to a 99-55 victory over Comets in Dakota Clash

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) roared to a 36-7 lead after the first quarter and never looked back for a 99-55 victory over Mayville State (N.D.) on the first day of the Dakota Clash women's basketball action at DSU Fieldhouse Friday evening.  The Trojans shot a blazing 57.1 percent from the field and forced the Comets to 32 turnovers in the game.

DSU improved to 5-3 overall record.  MSU suffered its first defeat of the season, falling to 2-1 overall record.

Valley City State (N.D.) defeated Presentation (S.D.) 57-37 in the first game of the Dakota Clash tournament.

The tournament concludes on Saturday afternoon with Mayville State taking on Presentation at 2 p.m., followed by DSU playing Valley City State at 4 p.m.

Dakota State (S.D.) 99, Mayville State (N.D.) 55 – FINAL

  • Mayville State only led for nearly two minutes of the game before Dakota State took control of the game.  Danneka Voegeli hit a basket with 9:25 on the clock for MSU 2-0 lead.
  • The Trojans exploded for 15 straight points from four different scorers – Jessi Giles, Elsie Aslesen, Savannah Walsdorf and Lexi Robson.  DSU led 15-2 after a pair of free-throws by Giles with 5:52 left in the first period.
  • Dakota State continued its scoring surge, holding the Comets to five points in the final 5:23 of the first quarter.  The Trojans' lead grew to 29 points, thanks to sizzling 71.4 percent shooting from the field (15-of-21 field goals) and forcing MSU 19 turnovers.  MSU was limited to 27.3 percent from the field (3-of-11 field goals).
  • DSU maintained control in the second quarter, leading as many as 48 points.  Lex Evans drained a 3-pointer when the first half expired as DSU's lead grew to 63-15.  DSU outscored MSU 27-8 in the second quarter.
  • Dakota State shot 62.5 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes of the game (25-of-40 field goals).  The Comets were held to 22.2 percent from the field (6-of-27 field goals).  MSU committed 24 turnovers in the first half.
  • Shaylee DeBeer made a basket with 3:15 left in the third quarter to give Trojans' its biggest lead of the game at 85-25.
  • The Trojans led 88-31 after three quarters.  DSU outscored the Comets 25-16 in the first ten minutes of the second half.
  • Mayville State outscored Dakota State 24-11 in the final quarter.
  • Aselsen scored a season-high 22 points on her 8-of-13 field goals and made all four free-throws for DSU.  She registered four blocked shots.  Giles added 16 points (6-of-8 field goals).  Walsdorf scored 14 points (7-of-9 field goals) and tied her career-high six steals.
  • Morgan Koepsell tallied 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench for the Trojans.  She also had two blocks and two steals.  Courtney Menning dished out a career-high 11 assists.  Robson and Menning each stole the ball four times. 
  • Ashlyn Macdonald and Robson each had nine points for DSU.  Aslesen and Macdonald each pulled down five rebounds.
  • Jordan Zrust led the Comets with 20 points on her 9-of-11 field goal shooting.  Grace Cote and Voegeli each added eight points.  CJ Decker had six assists and two steals.
  • Dakota State made 40 field goals in 70 attempts.  The Trojans were 7-of-18 from the 3-point line and converted 12-of-15 free-throws.  Mayville State was 37.5 percent from the field (21-of-56 field goals) and 4-of-14 3-pointers.  MSU was 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.
  • The Comets edged the Trojans on the rebounding (35-34).
  • DSU outscored MSU 43-11 in points off turnovers and 62-24 inside the paint.
