DSU softball comes up short in second game of PC Dome Tournament

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Dakota State University (S.D.) Trojan softball team lost their second game of the Presentation (S.D.) Softball Dome Tournament on the season opening day Friday afternoon.  The Trojans were defeated by long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) Tigers with a score of 6-3, despite DWU scoring all six runs in the opening inning.

The Trojans went 0-2 record on the first day of the tournament, losing to Dordt (Iowa) followed by Dakota Wesleyan on Friday afternoon.  Dakota Wesleyan was playing their season opener against the Trojans.

Dakota State was led by Nicole Stewart and Faith Danner who also totaled two hits.  Stewart drilled two doubles and drove in two runs.  Vinitzia and Madison Aldendifer each added a hit.  Rosie Philop reached on base by a walk twice and swiped one base.

The Tigers were led in hits by Stephanie Gabel and Alexis Konda who each had two hits.  Konda had a double, single and collected two RBIs.  Adrianna Thomason, Allison McElveny and Mikael Smith each had a hit.    

The Trojans will face No. 22-ranked Morningside (Iowa) at 12 p.m. and Jamestown (N.D.) at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Presentation Softball Dome, seeking for their first victories of the season.

Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL

  • Dakota Wesleyan came out very strong after scoring all six of their runs in the bottom first inning, highlighted by Konda with a 2-RBI double.
  • Dakota State was scoreless until third inning, where they scored twice.  With bases loaded and two outs situation, Stewart smashed a 2-RBI double to score Philop and Aldendifer to cut DWU's lead to 6-2.
  • Stewart led off the top sixth inning with a double.  Annalisa Ingui, pinch runner for Stewart, scored home caused by DWU's defensive miscues as the Trojans trailed 6-3.
  • The Trojans could not complete a comeback in the final inning as the Tigers secured the victory.
  • Ingui, Philop, and Aldendifer each scored a run for Dakota State. 
  • Dakota Wesleyan used six different players with a run scored (Thomason, Gabel, Konda, Reagan Nebel, Alyssa Garica and McElveny).
  • Faith Danner (L, 0-1) tossed a complete game for DSU.  She allowed six runs on eight hits.
  • Alyson VanderPol (W, 1-0) earned the victory in the pitching circle for DWU.  She worked for four innings and gave up two runs on four hits.  Devany Farris pitched three innings in relief, yielding one unearned run on two hits.  She recorded three strikeouts.
  • Dakota Wesleyan outhit Dakota State 8-6.  The Trojans left six runners on base compared to the Tigers four runners left on base.
  • Both teams will meet for the second meeting in the PC Dome next Friday, Feb. 21 and again later in the season in Madison with a doubleheader scheduled for April 7.
