Trojan softball goes 0-2 record in Day 2 of PC Dome Tournament

ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Dakota State University (S.D.) Trojan Softball team fell to another pair of the Great Plains Athletic Association foes on the second day of the Presentation (S.D.) Dome Tournament.  The Trojans lost to No. 22-ranked Morningside (Iowa) 5-1 and closed the weekend with a 6-3 setback to Jamestown (N.D.).

Dakota State went 0-4 record on their season opening weekend at PC Dome.  Morningside is 4-0 overall record and Jamestown is 3-1 overall record.

DSU will head back to Aberdeen on Feb. 21-22 for another tournament at the PC Dome. They will face Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), Morningside, No. 10-ranked Valley City State (N.D.) and Jamestown in the tournament.

Game 1: (22) Morningside (Iowa) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

  • Morningside took the first lead of the game in the bottom second inning.  Kelsey Spongberg reached on base by a walk with one out, followed by Taylor Richter's hit-by-pitch to advance Spongberg to second base.  Cortney Joiner hit a single to set up a bases loaded situation.  Carrington Entringer produced an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.
  • MC plated twice in the bottom third, thanks to Josie Baxter's RBI double followed by Morgan Nixon's RBI single to extend their lead to 3-0.
  • Rylee Olson drilled a 2-RBI double with two outs as Morningside's lead ballooned to 5-0 in the bottom fourth inning.
  • Dakota State ended their scoreless drought with a run scored in the top fifth.  Julia Andersen kicked off the inning with a single and swiped to second base.  Sarah Torres hit an RBI single to score Andersen as the Trojans trailed 5-1.
  • Vinitzia Blanco finished the game by going 2-of-3 with two singles and swiped one base for the Trojans.  Torres had a single and an RBI.  Annalisa Ingui hit a double, single and stolen base.  Xitlali Lopez and Andersen each recorded a single.  Andersen had a stolen base.
  • Morningside was led by Carson Cameron who had two hits.  Olson had a double and two RBIs.  Josie Baxter registered a double and an RBI.  Joiner and Nixon each had a hit.
  • DSU outhit MC 7-6 in the game.  The Mustangs left eight runners on base compared to the Trojans six runners left on base.
  • Madison Aldendifer (L, 0-2) recorded the defeat after tossing two innings for the Trojans.  She gave up three runs on three hits.  Lopez allowed up two runs on three hits in relief and struck out three MC's batters.
  • Lisa Bolton started the game by pitching two innings for the Mustangs, yielding three hits.  Hallie Misiaszek (W, 1-0) pitched two innings as well, allowing two hits to pick up the victory.  Bolton and Misiaszek each recorded three strikeouts.  Alex Nelson pitched the final three innings for Morningside and gave up one run on two hits.

Game 2:  Jamestown (N.D.) 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL

  • Jamestown pound out 17 hits compared to Dakota State seven hits in the battle of former conference foes (Dakota Athletic Conference and North Star Athletic Association conferences). 
  • The Jimmies grabbed the first lead in the top second inning after an RBI single by Megan Neiles.  Courtney Espinoza added an RBI single to extend UJ's lead to 2-0 in the top third.
  • DSU answered with a run scored in the bottom half of the third frame.  Andersen reached on base by a walk.  She advanced to second base after Torres' ground out.  Ingui produced an RBI double to score Andersen as the Trojans trailed 2-1.
  • Santina Zito hit an RBI double and Lorigan Steuben added an RBI single as Jamestown's lead grew to 4-1 in the top fifth.  Jamestown made it 5-1 in the top sixth, thanks to lead-off double by Megan Neiles followed by Steph Cota's single.  Mikayla Frost recorded an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Neiles.
  • Faith Danner drilled an RBI double as the Trojans cut the Jimmies' lead to 5-2 in the bottom sixth.  Elizabeth Whitesides added an RBI sacrifice fly as DSU trailed 5-3.
  • Neiles hit an RBI double to increase UJ's lead to 6-3 in the top seventh and secured the victory.
  • Torres paced the Trojans with two hits.  Ingui had a double and an RBI.  Kaysea Luna, Andersen and Danner each added a double.   Whitesides had a hit. 
  • Mariah Wick, Neiles, and Steph Cota each led UJ's offense attack with three hits each.  Morgan Geiszler and Caitlyn Courtney each added two hits.  Neiles produced two RBIs.
  • Danner (L, 0-2) tossed a complete game in the pitching circle, despite the defeat for Dakota State.  She allowed six runs (one unearned) on 17 hits.
  • Ann-Marie Crandlemire (W, 1-0) pitched four innings for Jamestown, giving up one run on three hits. Samm Hamilton pitched a scoreless fifth inning, allowing three hits.  Maggie Wallin worked the final two innings in relief and allowed two unearned runs on one hit.
