ROSE HILL, Kan. – Dakota State (S.D.) captured their first win of the 2020 baseball season in the first game of a three-game series against Southwestern (Kan.) on Saturday at Rich Hill High School baseball field. The Trojans won the first game by the score of 12-2 but were shutout in the second game by the score of 9-0.
The Trojans are 1-4 overall record while the Moundbuilders of the Kansas Athletic Collegiate Conference (KCAC) are 1-5 overall record. It was the first road non-conference victory for DSU since March 5, 2016.
Both teams will play a nine-inning game Sunday afternoon as they wrap up their three-game series. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
Game 1: Dakota State (S.D.) 12, Southwestern (Kan.) 2 – FINAL
- Dakota State was led by senior first baseman Esai Hernandez, who smashed two home runs and drove in a game-high four runs. His first home run came in the top second frame with a solo home run to give Trojans a 1-0 lead.
- DSU plated four runs in the fourth inning as their lead grew to 5-0. Mason Macaluso, Jace Pribyl and Chris Kropuenske each reached safely on base to kick off the top fourth with a bases loaded situation. A passed ball committed by SWC allowed Macaluso to score to give DSU a 2-0 lead.
- Hernandez blasted his second home run of the game, hitting a 3-run home run to score Pribyl and Kropuenske to balloon Trojans' lead to 5-0 in the top fourth.
- Southwestern answered with a 2-run home run by Cody Carpenter to trim Dakota State's lead to 5-2.
- The Trojans produced another four-run inning the top fifth as their lead grew to 9-2, thanks to three runs scored caused by Moundbuilders' defensive miscues and an RBI walk recorded by Mike Vohnoutka.
- DSU added two runs in the top seventh inning to complete their final score. Ryan McDaniel hit an RBI single, followed by Samuel Drummond's RBI double to increase their lead to 12-2.
- Hernandez finished the game by going 2-of-3 with a walk. Drummond had a double and collected two RBIs. McDaniel tallied two singles and two RBIs. Jackson O'Neal recorded two hits. Macaluso, Pribyl, Kropuenske and Vohnoutka each had a hit.
- Carpenter was 1-for-2 at the plate for the Moundbuilders. He had a home run, double and drove in two runs. Donovan McMullen added a hit.
- Dakota State collected a total of ten RBIs in the game compared to Southwestern two RBIs. DSU outhit SWC 11-2 in the game.
- Devin DeBoer (W, 1-1) pitched all seven innings to earn a complete game victory for the Trojans. He yielded two runs on three hits and struck out six SWC's batters.
- Tanner Olmstead (L, 0-1) picked up the setback as he worked for four innings for the Moundbuilders. He gave up five runs on seven hits. Wyatt Anderson pitched one inning in relief and allowed no hits, four walks and four runs (three unearned). Jacob Woodburn tossed two innings and gave up three runs (one unearned) on four hits.
Game 2: Southwestern (Kan.) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL
- Dakota State couldn't carry their momentum from Game 1 into the second game of the three-game series. Jared Kiessling hit a grand slam with two outs to give Southwestern a 4-0 lead in the bottom first inning.
- The Moundbuilders scored once in the bottom fifth with a bases loaded situation. Angel Velez produced an RBI sacrifice fly to give SWU a 5-0 lead.
- Liam Whalen smashed a grand slam with two outs in the bottom sixth as Southwestern lead grew to 9-0.
- Drummond and Pribyl each had two singles for Dakota State. Macaluso, Hernandez, Seth Resnick and Micah DeHarty each reached on base by a walk.
- Whalen and Kiessling each had a grand slam in the game and drove in four runs for Southwestern. Carpenter had a double and single. Taite Saldana recorded a single.
- The Moundbuilders outhit the Trojans 6-4 in the game. DSU left five runners on base compared to SWC three runners left on base.
- Jeremy Lopes (L, 0-2) tossed three innings for Dakota State and recorded the loss. He allowed four runs on two hits. Carver Hultgren worked two innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits and struck out three SWC's batter. Trey Randel tossed the sixth inning and allowed four runs on two hits.
- Austin Jentzsch (W, 1-0) pitched six innings to earn his first win of the season for Southwestern. He gave up four hits and recorded five strikeouts. Cody Treatch pitched a shutout seventh inning in relief.
