WINFIELD, Kan. – Dakota State (S.D.) finished their three-game baseball series against Southwestern (Kan.) at Broadway Sports Complex in a nine-inning game Sunday afternoon. The Trojans dropped their overall record to 1-5 after falling to the Moundbuilders by a score of 12-2 in seven innings. Southwestern improved their overall record to 2-5 after defeating the Trojans.
Southwestern is a member of the Kansas Athletic Collegiate Conference (KCAC). The Moundbuilders won the three-game-series, defeating the Trojans twice.
Dakota State takes a week off before preparing for a four-game series with Kansas Christian in Kansas City, Mo. The four-game series will feature a pair of doubleheaders, starting on Thursday, Feb. 27.
Southwestern (Kan.) 12, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/7 innings
- The score was knotted 1-1 after four innings before Southwestern outscored Dakota State 11-1 combined in the fifth and sixth innings.
- SWC kicked off the bottom first frame with a bases loaded situation with no outs. The Moundbuilders grabbed the first lead of the game at 1-0 after an RBI sacrifice fly by Angel Velez.
- The Trojans snapped their scoring drought with a run scored in the top fourth. Samuel Drummond drilled a double with one out. He advanced to third base after a defensive error by the Moundbuilders. Chris Kropuenske reached safely on base caused by SWC's defensive error and scored Drummond to tie the game at 1-1.
- The Moundbuilders poured in five runs in the bottom fifth inning, widening their lead 6-1.
- Dakota State added a run in the top sixth. Drummond reached on base by a walk with one out. Jace Pribyl followed up with a single and advanced Drummond to second base. After Kropuenske's fielder's choice to advance Drummond to third base (Pribyl was forced out at second base), Esai Hernandez hit an RBI single to score Drummond as the Trojans trailed 6-2.
- The Moundbuilders racked up six runs in the sixth inning to balloon their lead to 12-2. The Trojans could not extend the game after being scoreless in the seventh inning, securing the victory for Southwestern.
- DSU was led by Drummond, who scored both runs. He had a double and a walk. Hernandez added a single, walk and an RBI. Cody Winter also had a single.
- Carpenter scored twice and reached on base by a walk two times for SWC. Donovan McMullen tallied a double and drove in a game-high three runs. Chris Cata also had a hit and two RBIs. Skyler Espinoza and Velez each had a hit and an RBI.
- Southwestern hit .200 (5 hits in 25 at-bats) compared to Dakota State .154 batting average (4 hits in 26 at-bats).
- The Trojans ended with five defensive errors compared to the Moundbuilders who had two errors.
- Cameron Pitts pitched four innings for Dakota State, giving up one hit and one run to the Moundbuilders. Kahlil Tilbury (L, 0-1) recorded the defeat after tossing one out in the bottom fifth and allowed five unearned runs. Kevin Krumm, Pribyl and Logan Dexter also tossed in the game.
- Jacob Crabtree (W, 1-0) earned the victory after pitching five innings for Southwestern. He gave up one run on one hit. Brandon Poche and Cody Treatch each pitched an inning in relief. Poche allowed one run on two hits, while Treatch yielded one hit.
