MBK: Trojans come up short in final home game

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) hosted the Nebraska Christian Sentinels Tuesday evening in their final home men's basketball game of the 2019-2020 season. The short-handed Trojans came up short by a score of 65-61 against the Sentinels in the second all-time meeting (series began in 2018-19 season).

Dakota State fell to 8-21 overall record.  Nebraska Christian improved to 15-12 overall record.

The Trojans head to Bellevue, Neb. on Friday evening to wrap up their regular-season schedule before competing in the North Star Athletic Association Men's Basketball postseason tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 25.  DSU face the NSAA regular-season champion Bellevue (Neb.) with a tip-off set for 7 p.m. at Gordon Lozier Center.

  • Neither teams were able to establish control in the first sixteen minutes of the game.  There were five ties and one lead change, with the lead no bigger than five points by the Sentinels (15-10 with less than 12 minutes left on the clock).
  • Leading 30-26, NCC closed the first half with a 7-0 outburst in the final 1:15 to balloon their lead to 37-26.  Isaiah Collier hit a buzzer beater 3-point shot to boost the Sentinels' lead.
  • Nebraska Christian shot 53.8 percent in the first twenty minutes of the game (14-of-26 field goals) and held Dakota State to 34.5 percent (10-of-29 field goals).
  • A basket by Drue Aguilera give the Sentinels its biggest lead of the game at 45-30 with 17:21 remaining.
  • The Trojans stormed back with a monstrous 21-4 scoring run to regain their lead, capped by a basket by Brady Van Holland to give DSU a 51-49 lead with 7:08 left in the game.
  • Each team tied four times and traded leads four times before NCC pulled away for the victory.  A 3-pointer by Brady Elder gave the Trojans a 59-58 lead with 3:46 remaining.
  • DSU was held scoreless for more than three minutes, allowing NCC to score six straight points to earn a 64-59 lead after a basket by Uzi Felix with less than 25 seconds left. 
  • Gare Ewefada scored a layup as the Trojans cut their deficit to 64-61 with less than 16 seconds to go.  The Trojans fouled on Sentinels, sending Felix to the free-throw line with less than 10 seconds remaining.
  • Felix missed the bonus free-throw situation and was rebounded by NCC Aguilera and was fouled with 2.1 seconds.  He made the first free throw to secure the game, giving Sentinels a 65-61 victory.
  • Dakota State outscored Nebraska Christian 35-28 in the second half, thanks to their sizzling 51.9 percent (14-of-27 field goals).  NCC was 46.4 percent from the field in the second half (13-of-28 field goals).
  • The Trojans were led by Ewefada who totaled a season-high 17 points.  He was 7-of-14 from the field and converted 3-of-4 free-throws.
  • Van Holland and Carson Rentz each added 15 points for DSU.  Cole Bruhn had eight points.  Van Holland and Bruhn each pulled down six rebounds. 
  • Brady Elder scored six points for Dakota State.  He racked up a game-high five assists for the Trojans, surpassing Tanner Heiser (285 assists all-time from 2015-17) for fifth all-time assists in the record book.  Elder amassed 289 assists all-time after tonight's game. 
  • Nebraska Christian was led by Uzi Felix, who racked up 21 points off the bench.  He was 9-of-13 from the field.  Jeremiah Coleman added 11 points.
  • Collier pulled down a game-high nine rebounds for the Sentinels.  He also had seven points and dished out three assists.  Aguilera and Tyler Durham each tallied nine points.'
  • Nebraska Christian was 27-for-54 (50 percent) in field goals, while Dakota State was 24-for-56 (42.9 percent).
  • DSU was 8-for-29 (27.5 percent) from the 3-point arc.  NCC was 3-for-14 (21.4 percent) from the 3-point line.
  • The Sentinels outrebounded the Trojans 36-26 (12-7 on offensive boards).  NCC outscored DSU 40-26 inside the paint, 10-8 in second-chance points and 30-15 in bench points. 
  • Dakota State ended with a total of 13 assists, compared to Nebraska Christian's 11 assists.
