CSB: (14) Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) halts Trojans' winning streak

TUCSON, ARIZ. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to extend their winning streak Tuesday on the second day of the Tucson (Ariz.) Softball Invitational Games at Lincoln Park.  The Trojans suffered a 12-2 setback to No. 14-ranked Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), a member of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The Trojans fell to 2-9 overall record.  The Tigers raised their overall record to 12-5.

Dakota State is scheduled to play another CCAC member, facing St. Francis (Ill.) immediately after the game.

(14) Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) 12, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

  • Olivet Nazarene used a fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning highlighted by Miranda Southall's RBI double and Kelly Rinker's 2-RBI double for a 3-0 lead.
  • Dakota State answered with a run scored in the bottom first frame.  Elizabeth Whitesides reached on base caused by ONU's defensive error.  Sarah Torres followed up with a single to advance Whitesides to second base.  Both Whitesides and Torres swiped one base.  Vinitzia Blanco produced an RBI single to score Whitesides as DSU trailed 3-1 after the first inning.
  • Felicia Wacasey added a 2-RBI double to extend Olivet Nazarene's lead to 5-1 in the top second frame.
  • DSU produced three singles in the bottom second inning.  Madison Aldendifer led off with a walk, followed by Melissa Krapf's single to advance Aldendifer to secone base.  Whitesides hit a single with one out to set up a bases loaded situation.  Torres hit an RBI single to score Aldendifer as the Trojans trimmed the Tigers' lead to 5-2.
  • The Tigers scored once in the top third caused by DSU's defensive miscue for a 6-2 lead.  ONU made it 7-2 in the top sixth, thanks to Southall's lead-off triple followed by Rinker's RBI single to score Southall.
  • Olivet Nazarene exploded for five runs in the final inning and secured the victory over the Trojans.
  • Whitesides and Aldendifer each scored a run for the Trojans. 
  • DSU recorded nine hits in the game, paced by Torres with three singles and an RBI.  Blanco tallied a single and an RBI.  Xitlali Lopez recorded a double and single.  Whitesides, Krapf, and Kaysea Luna each had a hit.
  • Whitesides swiped two bases for DSU.  Torres added one stolen base.
  • Beers and Southall led the Tigers in runs, each scoring three runs.  ONU pound out 14 hits, led by Southall and Rinker who each had three hits.  Wacasey drove in a game-high four runs, while Rinker added three RBIs.
  • Xotchil Lopez (L, 0-2) recorded the defeat in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She pitched two innings and gave up five runs (one unearned) on six hits.  Xitlali Lopez worked for five innings in relief, allowing seven runs (one undearned) on eight hits.
  • Katie Marker started the game for Olivet Nazarene.  She tossed three innings and gave up two runs (one unearned) on six hits.  Kayla Hon (W, 3-2) earned the victory after pitching four scoreless innings in relief and yielded the Trojans to three hits.
