DSU holds off McPherson (Kan.) in five-set thriller to stay undefeated

SALINA, Kan. – Dakota State (S.D.) held off another member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) foe McPherson (Kan.) in the nightcap of the Kansas Wesleyan volleyball tournament Saturday evening at Mabee Arena.  The Trojans won in a five-set thriller by the scores of 17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25 and 15-12 to remain undefeated after the season-opening day in NAIA volleyball.

Dakota State moved to 2-0 overall record, including a 3-0 victory over KCAC foe Sterling (Kan.).  McPherson fell to 1-1 overall record. 

Dakota State (S.D.) 3, McPherson (Kan.) 2 – FINAL (17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12)

  • Dakota State opened the match with a 6-2 lead, thanks to a pair of kills by Maddie Polzin, a kill by Riley Grandpre and a service ace by Tayler Corey
  • McPherson went on an 11-4 scoring run to overtake a 13-10 lead.  The Trojans could get no closer than three points as the Bulldogs closed the first set by scoring five straight points for a 25-17 victory. 
  • MU grabbed a 1-0 match lead after hitting .225 in the first set (14 kills with 5 errors in 40 attempts).  DSU was held to .047 hitting efficiency (11 kills with 9 errors in 43 swings).
  • A kill by Polzin, followed by a service ace by Peyton Groft and an attack error by the Bulldogs gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead to start the second set.  McPherson then went on a 6-0 scoring tear to grab a 6-3 lead.
  • Dakota State answered back with a 5-1 run to overtake an 8-7 lead after a kill by Abagail Van Ruler. 
  • Knotted at 22-22, Hannah Viet smashed a kill followed by MU's attack error gave DSU a set point opportunity at 24-22.  After a kill by MU's Morgan Watson to cut DSU's lead to 24-23, Madalyn Groft closed the set with a kill (assisted by Peyton Groft) for a 25-23 victory and evened the match at 1-1.
  • Both teams recorded 13 kills in the second set.  The Trojans hit .182 (5 errors in 44 swings) compared to the Bulldogs .109 hitting percentage (8 errors in 46 attempts).
  • Dakota State raced to a 7-1 lead (including 6-0 scoring run) to kick off the third set.  Leading 13-10, DSU exploded for an 11-3 run for the biggest lead at 24-13 after an attack error by the Bulldogs.
  • McPherson used a furious comeback with a 9-0 scoring surge to cut Trojans' lead to 24-22.  Madalyn Groft snapped DSU's scoring drought with a kill (assisted by Peyton Groft) to grab a 2-1 match lead after a 25-22 victory.
  • DSU and MU each registered 12 kills in the third set.  The Trojans, however, hit better with a hitting percentage of .167 (5 errors in 42 swings).  The Bulldogs committed nine attack errors in 43 attempts (.070 hitting efficiency). 
  • Tied at 9-9 in the fourth set, Dakota State went on an 8-2 scoring tear to open a 17-11 lead after Madalyn Groft's kill.  McPherson scored five straight points to trim DSU's lead to 17-16.
  • Abigail Grabowska smashed a kill to give Trojans a 21-18 lead in the fourth.  McPherson soared back by closing the fourth set with a 7-1 scoring run for a 25-22 victory, forcing the fifth and deciding set.
  • Both teams struggled offensively in the fourth set, with McPherson hitting .080 (14 kills with 10 errors in 50 swings) and Dakota State .021 hitting percentage (10 kills with 9 errors in 48 attempts).
  • Trailing 5-3 in the fifth set, the Trojans went on a 6-0 scoring run to earn a 9-5 lead.  Riley Grandpre and Grabowska each had a pair of kills during DSU's scoring run.
  • McPherson could get no closer than one point at 12-11.  Dakota State secured the match after MU committed an attack error, recording a 15-12 victory.
  • The Trojans outhit the Bulldogs 9-5 in the deciding set.  DSU hit .208 (4 errors in 24 attempts) and held MU to .050 hitting percentage (4 errors in 20 swings).

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Polzin smashed 15 kills and tallied seven digs for DSU.  Grandpre added 11 kills and hit .259 in the match.  She also had match-high seven blocks (all block assists).  Viet and Grabowska each registered eight kills.
  • Madalyn Groft produced 40 set assists and three block assists for the Trojans.  Abigail Van Ruler added three block assists.
  • Peyton Groft led DSU's defense with 23 digs.  She added five assists and two service aces.  Corey added 19 digs, three assists and three service aces.  Tacey Fischbach had 13 digs. 
  • Watson led McPherson with a double-double of 18 kills and 12 digs.  Emily Terry added 14 kills.  Sydney Burton had 12 kills and five block assists.
  • Cynarah Rodriguez tallied 28 set assists for MU.  Morgan Abbott had a double-double of 17 assists and 11 digs.  Reven Bradbury collected 31 digs. 

TEAM COMPARISONS

  • McPherson smashed 58 kills in the match compared to Dakota State 55 kills.  The Trojans hit .114 (32 attack errors in 201 swings) while the Bulldogs hit .111 (36 attack errors in 199 attempts).
  • Both teams registered eight service aces.  The Bulldogs had 99 digs compared to the Trojans 84 digs.
  • MU recorded 10 team blocks (2 solos, 16 assists).  DSU had 16 block assists (8.0 team blocks).

UP NEXT

Dakota State concludes their tournament play on Sunday, facing two more foes from the KCAC conference.  The Trojans play the host-team Kansas Wesleyan at 10 a.m., followed by another match versus Friends (Kan.) at 12 p.m.  Both matches will be held at Mabee Arena.
