SALINA, Kan. – After falling the first set 25-22 to host-team Kansas Wesleyan on the final day of the tournament at Mabee Arena, Dakota State (S.D.) won the next three sets (25-18, 25-22 and 25-19) to earn a 3-1 road victory. The victory gave the Trojans its third consecutive victory and remained undefeated this season with a 3-0 overall record, all victories against members of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC).
It was the best start for the Trojans since the 2006 season (DSU started the season with a 4-1 record that year).
Kansas Wesleyan fell to 1-2 overall record. It was the second straight victory in the series meeting for DSU over the Coyotes.
Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Kansas Wesleyan 1 – FINAL (22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-19)
- Kansas Wesleyan kicked off the match with a 5-1 lead over Dakota State. Trailing 14-8, the Trojans rallied back with an 11-5 run to knot the first set at 19-19.
- DSU could get no closer than one point at 23-22 after a kill by Maddie Polzin. The Coyotes scored the final two points of the first set, earning a 25-22 victory and 1-0 match lead.
- Dakota State outhit Kansas Wesleyan 14-11 in the first set. The Trojans committed nine attack errors in 40 swings (.125 hitting percentage) compared to the Coyotes five attack errors in 36 attempts (.167 hitting efficiency).
- Leading 21-18, Dakota State closed the second set with a 4-0 run to secure a 25-18 victory and evened the match at 1-1. The Trojans took advantage of KWU's 11 attack errors in the second set, including a negative .030 hitting percentage by KWU (10 kills in 33 swings). DSU hit .226 in the set (11 kills with 4 errors in 31 attempts).
- The Coyotes raced to an 11-4 lead in the third set. DSU stormed back with an 11-3 run to knot at 14-14. Dakota State continued it scoring surge with an 8-2 run, thanks to kills by three different players—Hannah Viet, Polzin (3 kills), and Abigail Van Ruler—and a service ace by Nicole Sarringar.
- The Coytoes rallied back to cut DSU's lead to 23-22. A kill by Riley Grandpre followed by a kill by Madalyn Groft gave DSU a 25-22 victory and gained a 2-1 match lead.
- DSU smashed 19 kills in the third set and held KWU to nine kills.
- The Trojans opened the fourth set by scoring six straight points. DSU kicked off with a kill by Abigail Grabowska, followed by another kill by Madalyn Groft and a service aces by Tayler Corey. The Coyotes committed an error on next three rallies to give DSU a 6-0 lead.
- Kansas Wesleyan roared back to regain the lead at 14-13, including scoring six straight points. Dakota State answered back by using an 8-2 outburst to widen their lead to 21-16.
- Leading 21-19, the Trojans closed the match by scoring the final four points. A service ace by Tacey Fischbach gave DSU a 3-1 match victory (25-19 set four win).
- The Trojans outhit the Coyotes 16-9 in the fourth set. Dakota State hit .214 (7 errors in 42 swings) compared to Kansas Wesleyan .114 hitting efficiency (5 errors in 35 attempts).
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Polzin smashed a career-high 24 kills and hit .207 in the match for Dakota State. She also had eight digs. Van Ruler added 10 kills and recorded a hitting percentage of .400. She registered four block assists.
- Grabowska tallied nine kills for the Trojans. Madalyn Groft produced 30 set assists, nine digs, eight kills and three service aces. Sarringar added 22 assists and five digs.
- Corey collected 19 digs to pace DSU's defense. Peyton Groft added 16 digs. Riley Grandpre registered three block assists.
- Maddy Beckett had 14 kills and eight digs for the Coyotes. Morgan Bryand added 11 kills, nine digs and three service aces. Audrey Sineath had five block assists.
- Cortney Hanna contributed 19 set assists and six digs for KWU. Josie Deckinger had 12 assists and nine digs. Chelsea James had three block assists.
TEAM COMPARISONS
- Dakota State smashed a season high 60 kills in the match compared to Kansas Wesleyan 39 kills. The Trojans hit .186 (30 attack errors in 161 swings), while the Coyotes were held to .098 hitting percentage (25 errors in 143 attempts).
- Both teams recorded five team blocks in the match. DSU collected 69 digs compared to KWU 60 digs. The Trojans had six service aces. The Coyotes recorded five aces. DSU had 58 set assists compared to KWU 36 set assists.
