MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was held to 32.1 percent field goal shooting in the second half as Doane (Neb.) pulled away for a 71-55 victory on the second day of the tournament Saturday evening at DSU Fieldhouse. The Tigers outscored the Trojans 34-24 in the final twenty minutes of the game to secure the victory.
Dakota State fell to 0-2 overall record. Doane remained undefeated with 3-0 overall record. Midland (Neb.) defeated Presentation (S.D.) 81-57 in early game Saturday evening.
The Trojans look for their first win of the season as they play their first road contest Wednesday evening. DSU visits long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) at the Corn Palace. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Mitchell, S.D.
Doane (Neb.) 71, Dakota State (S.D.) 55 – FINAL
- Doane grabbed the first lead of the game after a 3-pointer by Alec Oberhauser with nineteen minutes, twenty-five seconds on the clock.
- Dakota State went on a 7-0 scoring run from three different scorers – Berto Gittens, Maxwell Nielson, and Ronnie Latting. DSU led 7-3 with 17:50 on the clock, forcing the Tigers to call its first timeout.
- Doane answered by scoring four straight baskets as part of their 10-0 outburst to regain their lead to 13-7 with 16:04 left in the first half.
- Gavin Schipper drained a 3-pointer as the Trojans trimmed the Tigers' lead to 23-22 with 8:38 to go before intermission.
- Holding a slim 32-21 lead, Doane closed the first half by scoring five straight points in the final minute to balloon their lead to 37-31.
- Doane shot 46.4 percent from the field in the first twenty minutes of the game (13-of-28 field goals) compared to Dakota State 41.4 percent (12-of-29 field goals). DU hit 6-of-13 3-pointers, while DSU was 4-of-13 from the 3-point arc.
- The Trojans could get no closer than four points after Latting's basket with 18:33 left (DSU trailed 37-33).
- Doane made three straight baskets as part of their 7-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Anthony Laravie for the first double-digit lead of the game at 44-33 with 17:27 remaining.
- The Tigers maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the game to secure the victory.
- Doane was 13-of-30 from the field (43.3 percent) and 6-of-14 from the 3-point line in the second half. Dakota State was held of 9-of-28 field goals and 1-of-7 from the 3-point arc.
- Jordan Lynn paced the Trojans with 14 points on his 6-of-9 field goal shooting. He also grabbed six rebounds, dished out three assists and stole the ball three times.
- Latting added 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds for DSU. He registered three assists and two steals. Gittens tallied 10 points and two steals. Nielson scored seven points and contributed two assists.
- Four Doane started hit double-digits in scoring, led by Laravie with 17 points on his 5-of-8 3-pointers. He had six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and stole the ball three times.
- Alec Oberhauser scored a game-high 19 points for the Tigers. He grabbed seven rebounds and produced four assists. Josiah Gardiner posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jaxon Harre added 12 points. Brady Timm had five assists.
- Doane shot 26-of-58 from the field (44.8 percent), including 12-of-27 from the 3-point arc. Dakota State was 21-of-57 field goals (36.8 percent) and 5-of-20 3-pointers.
- The Trojans converted 8-of-11 free-throws, while the Tigers were 7-of-13 from the free-throw line.
- Doane outrebound Dakota State 39-34.
- Both teams scored 24 points inside the paint and 11 points in second-chance points.
