La CROSSE, Wis. – NCAA Division II Winona State (Minn.) shot a sizzling 59.6 percent from the field Friday afternoon, rolling to an 84-46 exhibition victory over NAIA's 13th-ranked Dakota State (S.D.) on the first day of the Viterbo (Wis.) Classic at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium.
Dakota State remains at 4-3 overall record on the season. Winona State is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and was playing their first contest of the 2021-22 season.
The Trojans returns to regular-season action Saturday afternoon against Florida National. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. on the second day of the tournament.
Winona State (Minn.) 84, Dakota State (S.D.) 46 – FINAL
- Savannah Walsdorf drained a 3-pointer to give Dakota State a 3-0 lead with nine minutes, eleven seconds on the clock in the first period. She added another 3-pointer for a 6-3 lead.
- At 9-8, the Warriors held the Trojans scoreless for two minutes to fuel a 12-0 outburst for a 21-8 lead after a 3-pointer by Caitlin Riley.
- Winona State missed only three shots, shooting a red-hot 81.3 percent from the field to propel a 29-13 lead after the first quarter over Dakota State. DSU was 5-of-14 from the field (35.7 percent).
- The Trojans went on a scoring drought as the Warriors opened the second quarter on a 14-0 run. DSU halted its scoring drought with a basket by Angela Slattery with 4:27 on the clock (DSU trailed 43-15).
- WSU outscored DSU 20-8 in the second quarter to balloon their lead to 49-21 by halftime.
- The Warriors led 71-32 after three quarters. The Trojans outscored WSU 14-13 in the fourth quarter.
- Courtney Menning led DSU with 13 points on her 6-of-10 field goals. Walsdorf added nine points. Slattery scored eight points off the bench. Lilli Mackley had five points.
- Menning pulled down four rebounds for DSU. Elsie Aslesen added three rebounds. Lexi Robson dished out three assists. Jessi Giles and Walsdorf each stole the ball twice. Shaylee DeBeer had three steals.
- Riley and Emma Fee each scored 19 points for the Warriors. Vanessa Alexander earned five rebounds. Taylor Hustad had four assists.
- Winona State shot 34-of-57 from the field, including 10-of-26 from the 3-point line. Dakota State was held to 33.3 percent (16-of-48 field goals) and 8-of-25 from the 3-point line.
- The Warriors outrebounded the Trojans 32-21.
