McPherson (Kan.) sweeps Dakota State (S.D.) in season opening baseball

McPHERSON, Kan. – McPherson (Kan.) raced to an 11-0 lead in Dakota State's (S.D.) season-opening game one of the baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Park.  The Bulldogs won by the score of 11-0.  The Trojans jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second game but could not hold on to the lead as MC rallied back for a 5-4 win to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Dakota State fell to 0-2 overall record.  McPherson, a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), remained perfect this season with a 4-0 overall record.

DSU and MC would not be able to complete the four-game series with a doubleheader Sunday due to poor weather forecast conditions. 

Dakota State is scheduled to face Briar Cliff (Iowa) in a three-game series next weekend.  The location has not yet been determined.  Stay tuned to the DSU Athletics' website for future updates on schedule changes.

Game 1:  McPherson (Kan.) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

  • McPherson held Dakota State to a single and a walk in the first game of the doubleheader, cruising to an 11-0 victory.
  • With bases loaded situation and two outs in the bottom first, the Bulldogs grabbed its first lead of the game at 1-0 after an RBI walk by James Canar.
  • Jake Pearson and Trevor Johnson highlighted the bottom second with back-to-back RBI singles, extending McPherson's lead to 3-0.
  • The Bulldogs piled up five runs in the third inning, highlighted by Noah Nelson's 2-RBI double followed by Johnson's 2-run home run to widen their lead to 8-0.
  • MC scored three times in the bottom fourth frame to balloon their lead to 11-0.
  • Jace Pribyl had a single for Dakota State.  Chris Burke reached on base by a walk.
  • Nelson and Johnson each went 2-of-3 at the plate with three RBIs for McPherson.  Sammy Grim added two hits and scored three runs.  Pearson had a hit, three runs scored and an RBI.
  • The Bulldogs left six runners on base compared to the Trojans three runners left on base. 
  • Grant Svikulis (L, 0-1) took the loss on the pitching mound for DSU.  He worked for 2 2/3 innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits.  Trey Randel tossed 3 1/3 innings in relief, giving up three unearned runs on one hit.  Svikulis and Randel each recorded five strikeouts.
  • Alex Escobar (W, 2-0) tossed a complete game victory for MC.  He limited the Trojans to one hit and registered five strikeouts.

Game 2:  McPherson (Kan.) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL

  • Dakota State scored four runs in the first three innings in the second game of the doubleheader.  McPherson rallied back with a run in the fourth inning and poured in four runs in the fifth to hold off the Trojans.
  • Jackson O'Neal hit a single with one out in the top first inning.  Pribyl smashed a 2-run home run on the first pitch as DSU earned a 2-0 lead.  It was his first home run at Dakota State.
  • The Trojans extended their lead to 4-0 in the top third frame, thanks to another 2-run home run by Pribyl on a 1-2 count.  Pinch runner Josh Addington also scored after Ryan McDaniel led off the inning with a walk.
  • Johnson and Kyle Lux hit back-to-back singles to start the bottom fourth frame for the Bulldogs.  After a wild pitch by DSU to advance Johnson to third base and Lux to second base, Tyler Wood hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Johnson as MC cut DSU's lead to 4-1.
  • McPherson blasted a pair of home runs to overtake the lead from Dakota State in the bottom fifth.  Nelson hit a 3-run home run with one out as the Bulldogs knotted the game at 4-4.
  • Lux hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom fifth frame as McPherson grabbed a 5-4 lead.
  • Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring opportunities in the final inning as they left two runners on base when the game ended, securing the victory for the Bulldogs.
  • Pribyl was 3-of-3 at the plate with a pair of home runs, single and drove in a game-high four runs for DSU.  He scored two times.  O'Neal added a single and a run scored.  Esai Hernandez drilled a double.  Josh Van Beek and McDaniel each had a hit.  McDaniel reached on base by a walk two times.
  • Lux was 2-of-3 at the plate with a home run, single and an RBI for the Bulldogs.  Nelson added a home run and drove in three runs.  Johnson, Jake Pearson, and Wood each had a hit.
  • DSU outhit MC 7-6 in the game.  McPherson left five runners on base compared to Dakota State three runners left on base.
  • Devin DeBoer (L, 0-1) recorded the defeat on the pitching mound after tossing 4 2/3 innings for DSU.  He allowed five runs on five hits and struck out seven MC's batters.  JD Kirchner worked for one scoreless inning, giving up a hit.  Kahlil Tilbury pitched the final out of the bottom sixth frame.
  • Blake Maddock started the game on the pitching mound for MC.  He pitched the first four innings and gave up four runs on four hits.  He recorded six strikeouts.  Zach Reynolds (W, 1-0) earned the victory after working two scoreless innings in relief and yielded two hits.  Darby Gilbert (S, 1) earned the save after pitching a scoreless seventh inning, despite giving up a hit.
