DSU earns first win of the season, splits baseball doubleheader at Randall (Okla.)

MOORE, Okla. – Dakota State (S.D.) earned its first baseball victory of the 2021 season Tuesday afternoon, defeating host-team Randall (Okla.) at Randall Baseball Field.  The Saints exploded for ten runs in the first two innings of the second game, rolling past Trojans 10-3 to earn a doubleheader split.

Dakota State is 1-6 overall record.  Randall holds an overall record of 2-19.

DSU heads to Dallas, Texas on Friday to begin their four-game series with Dallas Christian.  Both teams will play a doubleheader on Friday and Saturday, with the first game on each day starting at 12 p.m.

Game 1:  Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Randall (Okla.) 1 – FINAL

  • Dakota State kicked off the first inning with a pair of runs scored for the first lead of the game.  Jackson O'Neal was hit-by-pitch with one out.  Jace Pribyl drilled an RBI double to score O'Neal for DSU 1-0 lead.
  • A pair of Saints' defensive miscues allowed Pribyl to score to extend the Trojans' lead to 2-0 in the top first frame.
  • Chris Kropuenske hit a single with one out in the top fourth frame for DSU.  Jeremiah Zimmerman reached safely on base caused by RU's defensive error, advancing Kropuenske to third base.
  • A balk committed by Randall allowed Kropuenske to score home as the Trojans' lead grew to 3-0 in the top fourth.
  • Preston Wiley smashed a lead-off home run in the bottom seventh inning as the Saints trimmed DSU's lead to 3-1.  The Trojans' defense halted RU's comeback attempt, securing the victory as the Saints left two runners on base when the game ended.
  • Pribyl finished the game by going 2-of-3 at the plate with a triple, double, an RBI and a run scored for Dakota State.  Kropuenske and Chris Burke each added a single.  Taylor Musgrave produced an RBI.
  • Wiley was 2-of-3 at the plate with a home run, single and an RBI for Randall.  Lance Nunley and Zach Clarkson each had two hits.  Nunley swiped one base.
  • RU outhit DSU 6-4 in the game.  The Saints committed four defensive errors compared to the Trojans two defensive miscues.  Randall left eight runners on base, while Dakota State had four runners left on base.
  • Trey Randel (W, 1-0) earned the victory after tossing 6 2/3 innings for DSU.  He yielded one run on six hits and recorded three strikeouts.  David Kirby (S, 1) earned the save after closing the game with the final out with two runners on base.
  • Evan Kating (L, 1-2) recorded the setback on the pitching mound for RU.  He tossed four innings and allowed three runs (two unearned) on four hits.  Louis Cottone, Jr. tossed three shutout innings in relief.

Game 2:  Randall (Okla.) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 – FINAL

  • Randall produced five singles, including four straight singles by Nunley, Reagan lamance, Cole Gaskey, and Mickey Sykes, to kick off the bottom first frame, and five walks to pour in eight runs.  The Saints led 8-0 after the first inning.
  • Hunter Wesberry and Nunley each added an RBI single to balloon Saints' lead to 10-0 after two innings.
  • The Trojans ended its scoring drought with a run scored in the top fourth frame.  Ryan McDaniel and Jackson O'Neal led off with back-to-back singles.  Pribyl reached safely on base caused by RU's defense error, allowing Alec Gannon – courtesy runner for McDaniel – to score home.  The Trojans trailed 10-1 after four innings.
  • Dakota State added two runs in the top fifth frame.  Kropuenske led off by hit-by-pitch.  Josh Addington hit a single to advance Kropuenske to third base.  Zimmerman hit an RBI's fielder's choice to score Kropuenske as DSU trailed 10-2 (Addington was out at second base on the same play).
  • McDaniel followed up with an RBI double to score Zimmerman as the Trojans trim the Saints' lead to 10-3.
  • DSU left a runner on base in the final inning as RU secured the victory.
  • McDaniel and O'Neal each led the Trojans with a double and single.  McDaniel and Zimmerman each contributed an RBI.  Addington had two singles.  Pribyl, Mason Macaluso and Kropuenske each had a single.
  • Nunley was 3-of-5 at the plate with three singles for the Saints.  Lamance and Skykes each had two singles.  Skyes and Wesberry each collected two RBIs.  Nunley, Lamance, Cole Gaskey, William Young and Ryan Stotts each had an RBI.
  • Randall recorded 11 hits in the game compared to Dakota State nine hits.  The Saints left 10 runners on base, while the Trojans had five runners left on base.
  • Thomas Geiger (L, 0-1) recorded the defeat after starting the game for the Trojans.  Max Luesebrink tossed two innings in relief.  He had three strikeouts.  Jared Urbach pitched three scoreless innings, yielding the Saints to two hits.  He recorded two strikeouts.  Kahlil Tilbury tossed a shutout sixth inning in relief.
  • Clarkson (W, 1-2) earned the victory after working for 4 2/3 innings.  He gave up three runs (two unearned) on six hits.  He had four strikeouts.  Eli Zarate tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits.
