Dakota State (S.D.) splits with Tabor (Kan.) in softball

HILLSBORO, Kan. – The Dakota State University Trojan softball team faced another opponent from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference on a warm day Wednesday at Hillsboro Recreation Center.  The Trojans earned a 2-1 pitcher's duel victory in the first game, while the Bluejays won the second game 9-1 in five innings to earn a doubleheader split.

Dakota State is 5-9 overall record.  Tabor is 3-15 overall record.

Due to impending weather this weekend, the two-day McPherson (Kan.) softball tournament had been moved to Thursday.  The Trojans kick off the day with a contest with KCAC's foe Bethel (Kan.) at 11 a.m. and wrap the week against Langston (Okla.) at 1 p.m.

Game 1:  Dakota State (S.D.) 2, Tabor (Kan.) 1 – FINAL

  • The Trojans earned its first lead of the game in the top first.  Elizabeth Whitesides led off the game with a walk.  She swiped to second base and advanced to third base after Mackenzie Sims' ground out.
  • Sarah Torres recorded an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Whitesides to give DSU a 1-0 lead in the top first.
  • Dakota State's defense held Tabor's runners on second band third base, as the Bluejays failed to convert their scoring chances in the bottom second frame.
  • Xitlali Lopez blasted a solo home run the top fourth inning as DSU's lead grew to 2-1.  It was her second home run of the season and her 13th career home run at Dakota State.
  • Tabor scored once in the bottom sixth frame, thanks to Analesia Bejarano's double.  Madison Henson reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive miscue, allowing Bejarano to score home as TC cut DSU's lead to 2-1.
  • The Bluejays left a runner on base in the final inning as the Trojans secured the victory.
  • Xitlali Lopez finished the game by going 2-of-3 at the plate with a home run, single and an RBI for Dakota State.  Whitesides added a single, stolen base and a run scored.  Torres produced an RBI.  Xotchil Lopez and Rosie Philop each registered a single.
  • Bejarano led Tabor with a double.  Henson had an RBI.  Summer Sorice, Rachael Gray, Rheana Smith, and Hannah Jones each had a hit.
  • Both teams had five hits in the game.  The Bluejays left eight runners on base compared to the Trojans four runners left on base.
  • Xitlali Lopez (W, 3-3) won the battle of the pitcher's duel after tossing a complete game for DSU.  She allowed one unearned run on five hits.  She struck out six Tabor's batters.
  • Marlee Baxter (L, 0-4) recorded the setback after pitching a complete game.  She gave up two runs on five hits.

Game 2:  Tabor (Kan.) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL/5 innings

  • After two scoreless innings in the second game, Tabor racked up four runs in the third and fourth innings and secured the victory with a run scored in the bottom fifth to earn a split.
  • Dakota State was unable to score first in the opening inning, despite leaving runners on third and second bases. 
  • With bases loaded situation in the bottom third inning, the Bluejays earned the first lead after Hannah Jones' 2-RBI single for a 2-0 lead.  Tabor added two more runs to balloon their lead to 4-0.
  • DSU scored once in the top fourth inning.  Annalisa Ingui and Sims each reached safely on base after Tabor's two consecutive defensive errors.  Ingui was tagged out at home after Madison Biller's bunt (Sims advanced to third base).
  • Madison Aldendifer hit an RBI single to score Sims as the Trojans cut the Bluejays' lead to 4-1.  The Trojans could not convert more scoring opportunities with bases loaded as the top fourth inning ended with a caught stealing at third base.
  • Tabor added four more runs in the bottom fourth frame, highlighted by Bejarano's 3-RBI double to widen their lead to 8-1.
  • The Bluejays produced three straight hits in the bottom fifth frame, securing the victory with one out.  Rachel Gray hit a single and swiped to second base.  She advanced to third base after Rheana Smith's single.  Jones hit an RBI single to score Gray to complete the final score at 9-1.
  • Torres went 2-of-3 at the plate with a double and single for the Trojans.  Aldendifer added a single and an RBI.  Biller and Julia Anderson each hit a single.  Philop recorded a walk.
  • Gray was 3-of-4 at the plate with three singles and scored twice for the Bluejays.  Jones added three singles and three RBIs.  Bejarano had a double and drove in a game-high four runs.  Smith and Mary Yandell each hit two singles.
  • Tabor outhit Dakota State 12-5 in the game.  The Bluejays left nine runners on base compared to the Trojans seven runners left on base.
  • Biller (L, 1-4) recorded the defeat after tossing 4 1/3 innings in the pitching circle for DSU.  She allowed nine runs (one unearned) on 12 hits.  She recorded three strikeouts.
  • Zoe Brewer (W, 1-4) earned a complete game victory for TC.  She limited the Trojans to one unearned run on five hits.
