Xitlali Lopez tosses no-hitter to fuel DSU's 8-0 shutout victory over Threshers

McPHERSON, Kan. Xitlali Lopez tossed a no-hitter, despite issuing a walk, to fuel Dakota State (S.D.) to an 8-0 five-inning victory over Bethel (Kan.) in the shorten McPherson (Kan.) Softball Tournament at Wall Park Thursday.  The McPherson tournament was originally scheduled to play on Friday and Saturday, but with impending poor weather conditions forecast for this weekend had prompted to move to single day tournament. 

DSU improved its overall record to 6-9.  Bethel, a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, fell to 2-13 overall record.

Dakota State wraps up the week in the state of Kansas with a contest against Langston (Okla.) at 3 p.m.

  • DSU's Xitlali Lopez (W, 4-3) allowed a walk in the top first inning to BU's Shailey Clark.  Lopez went on to retire the final 12 Threshers batters – five as strikeouts – to secure the victory for the Trojans. 
  • The Trojans scored its first run of the game in the bottom first frame.  Elizabeth Whitesides led off with a walk and swiped to second base.  Madison Aldendifer followed up with an RBI single to score Whitesides for 1-0 DSU lead.
  • Dakota State added two more runs in the bottom third frame.  Xotchil Lopez led of with a single.  Whitesides followed up with a bunt single to advance Xotchil Lopez to second base.  Aldendifer hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Xo. Lopez to third and Whitesides to second base.
  • Sarah Torres produced an RBI single to score Xo. Lopez as the Trojans extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom third (Whitesides advanced to third base). 
  • Dakota State made it 3-0 in the bottom third after Xi. Lopez hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Whitesides.
  • The Trojans scoring its scoring surge in the bottom fourth after plating three runs.  Vinitzia Blanco started the bottom fourth with a single.  Julia Andersen hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Olivia Peterson, pinch runner for Blanco, to second base.
  • Lia Chan hit a single to advance Peterson to third base with one out in the bottom fourth for the Trojans.  After Chan swiped to second base, Melissa Krapf drilled a 2-RBI triple to score Peterson and Chan to balloon DSU's lead to 5-0. 
  • Xo. Lopez followed up with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Krapf to widen Trojans' lead to 6-0.
  • Aldendifer and Torres began the bottom fifth with back-to-back walks.  Xitlali Lopez blasted an RBI double to score Aldendifer for 7-0 DSU lead (Torres advanced to third base).
  • The game ended with one out as Blanco recorded an RBI ground out to score Torres in the bottom fifth inning for the Trojans.
  • Dakota State collected nine hits in the game, led by Torres with two singles.  Krapf had a triple and an RBI.  Xi. Lopez had a double and drove in two runs.  Whitesides, Aldendifer, Blanco and Xo. Lopez each recorded a single.
  • Aldendifer, Torres, Blanco, and Xo. Lopez each tallied an RBI for DSU.  Whitesides and Chan each swiped one base.
  • Laura Pineda (L, 0-1) recorded the setback for Bethel.  She allowed six runs on eight hits.  Jesse McMichael worked in the fifth inning, giving up two runs on two hits.
  • Xi. Lopez faced 15 batters in the game for the Trojans.  The game took an hour to complete.
