KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas Christian kicked off the three-game baseball series with a 1-0 lead after two innings Friday in a nine-inning contest at KC Urban Youth Academy. Dakota State (S.D.) scored ten unanswered runs to earn a 10-1 victory for their fifth consecutive victory.
The Trojans evened their overall record 6-6, matching last year's wins total before the COVID-19 pandemic halted live sports worldwide. DSU had scored in double digits for the third time in the last four games. The Falcons fell to 12-3 overall record.
Both teams will finish their three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 12 p.m.
Dakota State (S.D.) 10, Kansas Christian 1 – FINAL
- Kris Davis reached on base by a walk in the bottom second inning for Kansas Christian. Gabe Storie drilled an RBI triple to score Parker Bryant (pinch runner for Davis) to give Falcons a 1-0 lead.
- After two outs in the top fourth frame for DSU, Samuel Drummond and Josh Addington recorded back-to-back walks. Chris Burke drilled an RBI double to score Drummond as the Trojans knotted the game at 1-1 (Addington advanced to third).
- Ryan McDaniel followed up with a 2-RBI single to score Addington and Burke as Dakota State grabbed a 3-1 lead.
- Jackson O'Neal reached safely on base after Falcons' miscue, allowing McDaniel advance to second base in the top fourth inning. Jace Pribyl extended his hitting streak to 12 games after recorded an RBI double to score McDaniel for 4-1 DSU lead.
- Dakota State plated three more runs in the top fifth inning. The Trojans set up a bases loaded situation after Esai Hernandez's hit-by-pitch, Chris Kropuenske's single and Drummond's single. Addington registered an RBI walk to score Hernandez as DSU's lead grew to 5-1.
- McDaniel drilled a 2-RBI double to score Kropuenske and Drummond as the Trojans ballooned their lead to 7-1 in the top fifth.
- Dakota State scored three more times in the top eighth innings, highlighted by Kropuenske's RBI double. The Trojans added two runs caused by KCC's defensive errors, extending their lead to 10-1.
- DSU's Devin DeBoer (W, 2-2) tossed eight innings, limiting the Falcons to one run on five hits to earn his second win of the season. He struck out a career-high 12 batters in the game. Kahlil Tilbury pitched a shutout ninth inning in relief.
- McDaniel and Kropuenske paced the Trojans' offense attack with three hits (one double and two singles) each. McDaniel drove in a game-high four runs. Burke and Pribyl each added a single and double. Drummond tallied two singles.
- Pribyl, Hernandez, Kroupenske, Addington and Burke each produced an RBI for Dakota State. Addington reached on base by a walk two times.
- Storie had a triple and an RBI for the Falcons. Chris Hunter, Stay'Jawn Hunter, Ja'Hawn Byrd, and Davis each added a single for KCC.
- Cole Henly recorded the defeat after tossing four innings on the pitching mound for Kansas Christian. He allowed four runs (one unearned) on seven hits. Julian Torres worked for five innings in relief, allowing six runs (three unearned) on eight hits.
- Dakota State outhit Kansas Christian 15-5 in the game. The Falcons committed three defensive miscues, while the Trojans did not commit an error.
