Lancers take softball twin bill over Trojans

YANKTON, S.D. – Mount Marty (S.D.) took the non-conference softball twin-bill over Dakota State (S.D.) Thursday afternoon at Riverside Park.  The Lancers scored twice in the bottom sixth inning to break a 1-1 into a 3-1 game one victory over the Trojans.  MMU defeated DSU 8-1 in the second game to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Dakota State fell to 6-16 overall record.  Mount Marty lifted their overall record to 14-9.

DSU continues their action Friday and Saturday as they resume their North Star Athletic Association action.  The Trojans play in a four-game series with Waldorf (Iowa), starting with a doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m.  The series take place at Waldorf Softball Field in Forest City, Iowa.

Game 1:  Mount Marty (S.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

  • Dakota State grabbed its first lead of the game in the top second inning of the first game.  Xitlali Lopez led off with a single.  Melissa Krapf drilled a double with one out and advanced Xi. Lopez to third base.
  • Lia Chan produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Xi. Lopez to give DSU a 1-0 lead in the top second.
  • Mount Marty answered with a run in the bottom third frame, thanks to Abigail Thomas and Emma Burns' doubles.  Burns produced an RBI to score Thomas as the Lancers knotted the game at 1-1.
  • Karlee Arnold blasted a 2-run home run with one out in the bottom sixth as MMU gained a 3-1 lead.
  • Mount Marty secured the game in the top seventh inning and did not allow the Trojans get on base when the game ended.
  • Krapf had a double for Dakota State.  Chan added an RBI.  Elizabeth Whitesides, Xi. Lopez and Rosie Philop each registered a single.
  • Arnold was 2-of-3 at the plate with a home run, double and drove in two runs for Mount Marty.  Burns added a double and an RBI.  Molly McCloud and Thomas each had a hit.
  • MMU had five hits in the game compared to DSU four hits.  The Lancers left six runners on base compared to the Trojans two runners left on base.
  • Xotchil Lopez (L, 0-3) tossed a complete game, despite a setback for Dakota State.  She gave up three runs on five hits.
  • Maureena Vornhagen started the game in the pitching circle for Mount Marty.  She allowed one run on three hits and recorded eight strikeouts in four innings of work.  Jill Orwig (W, 5-4) earned the victory after tossing three scoreless innings in relief, yielding the Trojans to one hit.  She struck out five DSU batters.

Game 2:  Mount Marty (S.D.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

  • The Lancers kicked off the second game of the doubleheader with four runs in the first two innings and never trailed.
  • Tara Oren reached on base by a walk followed by Burns' single.  Arnold hit a 2-RBI single with one out to score Oren and Burns to give MMU a 2-0 lead in the bottom first frame.
  • Sami Noble added an RBI single with two outs to score Arnold to extend Mount Marty's lead to 3-0 in the top first.
  • The Lancers' lead grew to 4-0 after Oren's RBI sacrifice fly to score Thomas, who led off the bottom second with a walk.
  • Dakota State snapped their scoring drought with a run in the top fourth inning.  Xi. Lopez hit a single with one out.  Krapf followed up with a single to advance Madissen Larson, pinch runner for Xi. Lopez, to second baes.  Chan reached on base by a walk with two outs to set a bases loaded situation for DSU.
  • Alexus Foster hit an RBI single to score Larson as the Trojans trailed 4-1 in the top fourth.
  • The Lancers plated three runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning, highlighted by a pair of doubles by Sarah Hart and Arnold.  Arnold collected a 2-RBI double to make it 6-1 in favor of MMU.  Noble added an RBI single to score Arnold as Mount Marty's lead grew to 7-1.
  • MMU made it 8-1 after Oren's RBI single in the bottom fifth inning. 
  • DSU left a runner on second base when the game ended, securing the victory for MMU.
  • Sarah Torres led the Trojans with two singles.  Chan added a double and a walk.  Foster had a hit and an RBI.  Xi. Lopez, Krapf and McKenzie Hermanson each added a hit. 
  • Arnold had a double, single and drove in a game-high four RBIs for Mount Marty.  Noble added two singles and two RBIs.  Burns collected two singles.  Hart had a double.  Oren and Madison Van Wyhe each recorded a single.  Thomas swiped two bases.
  • The Lancers outhit the Trojans 11-7 in the game.  Both teams left eight runners on base.
  • Philop (L, 0-2) took the defeat as she started the game in the pitching circle for DSU.  She allowed four runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.  Madison Aldendifer pitched for two outs in relief, giving up three runs on five hits.  Xi. Lopez pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, yielding the Lancers to an unearned run on two hits.  She recorded five strikeouts.
  • Kaylee Rogers (W, 4-3) pitched a complete game victory for MMU.  She limited the Trojans to one run on seven hits and registered five strikeouts.
