Comets open NSAA softball 4-game series with doubleheader sweep over Trojans

MAYVILLE, N.D. – Mayville State (N.D.) kicked off the North Star Athletic Association softball four-game series with a doubleheader sweep over Dakota State (S.D.) Saturday at Jerome Berg Field on the campus of Mayville State.  The Comets won the pitcher's duel in the first game by the score of 3-1 and earned a 12-7 victory over the Trojans in the second game.

Dakota State dropped their fourth straight game, falling to 10-20 overall record and 4-8 record in league.  Mayville State improved to 9-13 overall record and 5-5 NSAA conference record. 

Both teams close out their league four-game series Sunday with another doubleheader.  First game is set for 12 noon, concluding the 12-game road stretch for the Trojans.

Game 1:  Mayville State (N.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL

  • The NSAA four-game series kicked off the pitcher's duel between Dakota State's Xitlali Lopez and Mayville State's Shaye Kemball, which both pitchers tossed a complete game.
  • MSU earned the first lead of the game in the bottom first frame.  Dayna Gutierrez led off with a single and advanced to second base after DSU's wild pitch.  After two outs were recorded, Kemball hit an RBI single to score Gutierrez for Mayville State's 1-0 lead.
  • The Comets extended their lead to 2-0 in the bottom third, highlighted by Kemball's RBI double to score Mackenzie Duval who hit a single with two outs.
  • DSU ended its scoring drought with a run scored in the top fourth.  Madison Aldendifer kicked off the inning with a walk.  She advanced to second base after Sarah Torres' ground out.  A wild pitch committed by the Comets allowed Aldendifer to advance to third base.
  • Xi. Lopez produced an RBI ground out to score Aldendifer as the Trojans trailed 2-1 in the top fourth.
  • Mayville State added a run in the bottom fifth.  Alissa Foster hit a single, followed by Jocelyn Ontiveros' RBI double to score Foster to widen their lead to 3-1.
  • Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring chances in the top sixth, despite leaving runners on second and third bases.
  • The Trojans were unable to score in the final inning, securing the victory for the Comets.
  • Xi. Lopez was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and an RBI for DSU.  Vinitzia Blanco and Melissa Krapf each added a single.  Aldendifer reached on base by a walk twice and scored once. 
  • Kemball sparked MSU's offense with a double, single and drove in two runs.  Ontiveros added a double and an RBI.  Foster tallied two singles.  Guterrez and Duval each had a hit.
  • Mayville State outhit Dakota State 9-4 in the game.  The Comets left seven runners on base compared to the Trojans four runners left on base.
  • Xi. Lopez (L, 5-8) took the defeat, despite tossing a complete game for DSU.  She gave up three runs on nine hits and recorded a career-high nine strikeouts.
  • Kemball (W, 2-4) earned the complete game victory for MSU.  She yielded the Trojans to one hit on four hits.

Game 2:  Mayville State (N.D.) 12, Dakota State (S.D.) 7 – FINAL

  • Mayville State exploded for five runs in the first inning of the second game and never trailed in the game to secure the doubleheader sweep.
  • The Comets poured in five runs in the bottom half of the first frame, highlighted by Duval's 2-RBI single and capped by Madison Milligan's 2-RBI double for 5-0 lead.
  • The Trojans scored once in the top second.  Xotchil Lopez hit a single but was forced out at second base after Blanco's fielder's choice.  Lia Chan hit a single to advance Blanco to second base.  Krapf drilled an RBI double to score Blanco as DSU cut MSU's lead to 5-1.
  • Dakota State mounted a comeback in the top third inning after plating three runs.  Elizabeth Whitesides led off with a single.  She swiped to second base.  Aldendifer reached safely at first base by a fielder's choice as Whitesides was tagged out. 
  • Torres and Xi. Lopez hit back-to-back singles to set up a bases loaded situation with one out (Aldendifer advanced to second base).  Xo. Lopez hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Aldendifer as the Trojans trailed 5-2.
  • Blanco added an RBI single to score Torres as the Trojans trimmed the Comets' lead to 5-3 in the top third.  Chan followed up with an RBI double to score Xi. Lopez to reduce DSU's deficit down to one run at 5-4.
  • Mayville State answered with three runs in the bottom third, thanks to three straight walks to open the bottom half.  Milligan hit an RBI single, followed by Sadie Mathews' RBI walk and Taylor Stegman's RBI fielder's choice to balloon their lead to 8-4.
  • The Comets made it 10-4 in the bottom fourth after producing three doubles.  Kemball hit a double with one out, followed by an RBI double each by Foster and Brooke Roeges.
  • DSU tallied three runs in the top sixth inning.  Chan reached on base by a walk with one out.  Jacquelyn Folkers followed up with a single and advanced Chan to second base.  Chan and Folkers each swiped one base.  Alexus Foster reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation.
  • Whitesides produced an RBI ground out to score Chan as Dakota State trailed 10-5 in the top sixth.  Aldendifer hit a 2-RBI single to score Folkers and Foster as DSU cut MSU's lead to 10-7.
  • Milligan hit a 2-RBI double in the bottom sixth frame to extend Mayville State's lead to 12-7.
  • MSU retired the final three DSU batters, securing the victory.
  • Chan was 2-of-2 at the plate with two singles and an RBI for Dakota State.  Aldendifer added a single and two RBIs.  Whitesides, Torres, Xi. Lopez, Xo. Lopez, Blanco and Krapf each added a hit and an RBI.  Folkers tallied a single.
  • Mayville State registered six doubles in the game, led by Milligan with two doubles, single and drove in five runs.  Kemball added a double, single and an RBI.  Duval had a single and two RBIs.  Foster and Roeges each had a double and an RBI.
  • Both teams tallied 10 hits in the game.  The Comets had seven runners left on base compared to the Trojans five runners left on base.
  • Xo. Lopez (L, 1-5) took the setback after working for 2 1/3 innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She allowed seven runs on five hits.  Aldendifer pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, giving up three runs on two hits.  Rosie Philop worked for one inning in relief and allowed two runs on three hits.
  • Courtney Boll (W, 4-5) earned the victory after pitching a complete game.  She allowed seven runs on ten hits.
