DSU and MSU split NSAA baseball doubleheader Saturday

MAYVILLE, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable hold on to their 5-4 lead after three innings in the North Star Athletic Association baseball four-game series opener Saturday as Mayville State (N.D.) scored six unanswered runs for a 10-5 victory at Scott Berry Field.  The Trojans poured in 15 runs in the second game of the doubleheader, propelling to a 15-7 victory to gain a doubleheader split.

Dakota State is 13-14 overall record and 6-6 record in North Star conference play.  It was the first time since March 28, 2016 that the Trojans defeated the Comets, as well as the first time since April 18, 2015 that DSU won at Scott Berry Field.  Mayville State is 19-10 overall record and 8-4 record in league play.

Both teams close out the four-game series with another doubleheader Sunday with the first game at 12 noon, concluding Trojans' 11-game road stretch.

Game 1:  Mayville State (N.D.) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 – FINAL

  • Dakota State kicked off the game by plating three runs with two outs.  Ryan McDaniel led off with a walk.  After two outs were recorded, Mason Macaluso drilled a double to advance Alec Gannon, courtesy runner for McDaniel, to third base.
  • Chris Kropuenske blasted a 3-run home run to give DSU a 3-0 lead in the top first.
  • Mayville State answered with four runs in the bottom half of the first frame.  Marcus Hughes reached on base by a walk.  Jared McCorrister hit a single to advance Hughes to third base.  After a passed ball by DSU to advance McCorrister to second base, Theo May hit a 2-RBI double to score Hughes and McCorrister as MSU trailed 3-2.
  • Gunner Garpestad hit an RBI single to score May as the Comets knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom first.  Skylar Forst added a single to advance Garpestad to second base.  On the same play, Garpestad scored home caused by DSU's defensive miscue to give MSU a 4-3 lead.
  • The Trojans regained their lead with two runs scored in the top third.  Jackson O'Neal led off with a single.  Jace Pribyl hit a sacrifice bunt to advance O'Neal to second base.  Kropuenske hit his second home run of the game, hitting a 2-run home run to give Dakota State a 5-4 lead.  It was his sixth home run of the season.
  • A fourth lead change was recorded in the bottom fourth as MSU scored three times, capped by McCorrister's 2-run home run for a 7-5 lead.
  • Mayville State produced three runs in the bottom sixth frame, highlighted by McCorrister's RBI single and Michael Theisen's RBI sacrifice fly to make it 10-5.
  • DSU was unable to score in the final inning of the nine-inning contest, despite leaving a runner on base after Jeremiah Zimmerman's lead-off single.
  • Kropuenske fueled the Trojans' offense attack by going 3-of-4 at the plate with two home runs, single and collected a game-high five RBIs.  O'Neal and Zimmerman each added two singles.  Macaluso had a double.  Pribyl, Samuel Drummond and Taylor Musgrave each had a single.
  • McCorrister led the Comets with a home run, two singles and tallied three RBIs.  May added a double and two RBIs.  Garpestad had a double, single and an RBI.  Hughes, Forst, Sammy Starom and Anthony Villanueva each added a hit.
  • DSU outhit MSU 11-10 in the game.  The Trojans left seven runners on base compared to the Comets six runners left on base.
  • Devin DeBoer (L, 3-3) took the defeat on the pitching mound after tossing five innings for DSU.  He gave up seven runs (three unearned) on eight hits.  JD Kirchner worked the sixth inning.  Logan Terfehr pitched two shutout innings in relief.
  • Connor DiNaro (W, 3-1) earned the victory for MSU.  He threw 6 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits.  Trevor Schreiner tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, limiting the Trojans to two hits.

Game 2:  Dakota State (S.D.) 15, Mayville State (N.D.) 7 – FINAL

  • Dakota State scored at least a run in the first five innings, fueling to a 15-7 victory over Mayville State for the doubleheader sweep.  The Trojans also took advantage of MSU's eight defensive errors in the game.
  • The Trojans scored twice to kick off the second game, thanks to O'Neal lead-off double.  Drummond reached safely on base by MSU's defensive error.  Pribyl followed up with a bunt and reached safely on base by another Comets' error, allowing O'Neal to score for DSU 1-0 lead (Drummond advanced to third base).
  • Dakota State made it 2-0 in the top first as Kropuenske recorded an RBI fielder's choice to score Drummond.
  • Mayville State recorded a defensive error to allow DSU's Josh Addington reach safely on first base to start the top second frame.  O'Neal drilled an RBI double with two outs to score Addington as the Trojans extended their lead to 3-0.
  • DSU continued its scoring surge with another two runs in the top third inning.  Kropuenske reached safely on base by MSU's miscue with two outs.  Josh Van Beek followed up with a double to advance Kropuenske to third base.  The Comets committed another defensive error to allow Kropuenske and Van Beek to score, ballooning Dakota State's lead to 5-0.
  • Villanuea hit a lead-off solo home run in the bottom third as Mayville State trailed 5-1.
  • The Trojans exploded for six runs in the top fourth inning.  Shain Kimmes hit a single, followed by O'Neal's walk and Drummond's bunt single to set up a bases loaded situation.  Pribyl reached on first base by a fielder's choice as Gannon (courtesy runner for Kimmes) was forced out at home. 
  • Macaluso blasted a grand slam on a 3-1 count as Dakota State's lead grew to 9-1 in the top fourth.  It was his second grand slam during NSAA contest this season.  The Trojans added two more runs as Addington reached on base by a walk, followed by Van Beek's single and Zimmerman's single.  On the same play from Zimmerman's single. Addington and Van Beek scored home caused by MSU's defensive miscue for an 11-1 lead.
  • With bases loaded situation in the bottom half of the fourth inning, Marcus Wohl hit a 2-RBI single as the Comets trimmed DSU's lead to 11-3.
  • The Trojans kicked off the top fifth with three straight singles by O'Neal, Drummond and Pribyl to set up a bases loaded situation.  Macaluso hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score O'Neal for 12-3 DSU lead.  Kropuenske added a walk for another bases loaded situation for DSU.
  • DSU extended their lead to 13-3 after Van Beek's RBI walk to score Drummond in the top fifth.  Zimmerman also reached safely on base after MSU's error, allowing Pribyl and Kropuenske to score as the Trojans ballooned their lead to 15-3.
  • Mayville State cut Dakota State's lead to 15-5 in the bottom fifth as Garpestad hit an RBI triple and then scored home after DSU's passed ball.
  • The Comets scored twice in the bottom seventh inning but the Trojans secured the victory after MSU left two runners left on base when the game ended.
  • Macaluso sparked Dakota State's offense with a grand slam and drove in a game-high five runs.  O'Neal added two doubles, single and scored three times.  Van Beek had a double, single and an RBI.  Addington and Zimmerman each had a single and two RBIs.  Pribyl collected a hit and an RBI.
  • Villanueva had a home run and an RBI for Mayville State.  Wohl added two hits and two RBIs.  Garpestad recorded a triple, single and an RBI. 
  • DSU tallied 12 hits in the game compared to MSU seven hits.  Both teams left nine runners on base.
  • Chris Burke (W, 3-1) earned the victory after tossing six innings for the Trojans.  He allowed five runs on six hits.  Gage Nagy worked the bottom seventh inning in relief, allowing two runs on one hit.
  • Matthew Johnston (L, 3-2) took the loss on the pitching mound for the Comets.  He gave up 11 runs (six unearned) on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.  Ryan Froemke worked for two outs, allowing four runs on three hits.  Brett Christopherson and Peyton Sell combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief.
