DSU falls short at Mayville State (N.D.), concludes 11-game road trip

MAYVILLE, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to wrap up their 11-game baseball road stretch, falling short in the North Star Athletic Association four-game series Sunday at Scott Berry Field.  The Comets won the first game by the score of 10-2 and held off the Trojans 8-7 in the four-game series finale, earning a 3-1 record in the series.

Dakota State fell to 13-16 overall record and 6-8 record in league play.  Mayville State lifted their overall record to 21-10 and 10-4 record in the North Star contests.

The Trojans kick off their eight-game home stand at Flynn Field on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader versus Dordt (Iowa).  The first game is set for 5 p.m.

Game 1:  Mayville State (N.D.) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

  • Mayville State scored the first run of the game in the bottom first, thanks to a lead-off double by Marcus Wohl.  With two outs, Michael Theisen hit an RBI single to score Wohl for 1-0 MSU lead.
  • The Comets started the bottom second inning with a single by Skylar Forst, followed by a double by Adam Senden and a walk by Sammy Satrom to set up a bases loaded situation.
  • Anthony Villanuva hit a 2-RBI double to score Forst and Senda to extend Mayville State's lead to 3-0 (Satrom advanced to third base).  Marcus Hughes hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Satrom to widen MSU's lead to 4-0.
  • The Trojans ended their scoring run with a pair of runs in the top fourth.  Samuel Drummond hit a single with one out.  Josh Van Beek and Josh Addington each reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation.
  • Shain Kimmes produced a 2-RBI single to score Drummond and Van Beek as the Trojans trailed 4-2 in the top fourth frame.
  • The Comets extended their lead to 5-2 in the bottom fourth after an RBI sacrifice fly by Wohl.
  • Mayville State made it 6-2 in the bottom sixth, highlighted by Villanuea's RBI double.  The Comets plated four runs in the bottom seventh inning, capped by 2-RBI double by Satrom to balloon their lead to 10-2.
  • DSU left a runner on base in the final inning as MSU secured the victory.
  • Kimmes led the Trojans with a single and drove in two runs.  Drummond and Van Beek each scored once and recorded a single.  Chris Kropuenske and Addington each tallied a single.  Chris Burke and Jace Pribyl each reached on base by a walk twice.  Burke swiped one base.
  • Villanueva sparked the Comets' offense with two doubles and drove in three runs.  Satrom added a double and two RBIs.  Senden had two hits and an RBI.  Wohl, Theisen and Theo May each recorded a hit and an RBI.
  • Mayville State tallied 11 hits in the game compared to Dakota State five hits.  DSU left six runners on base, while MSU had five runners left on base.
  • Trey Randel (L, 2-2) took the defeat after tossing six innings for the Trojans.  He allowed six runs on seven hits and recorded four strikeouts.  Jared Urbach worked the seventh inning, while Max Luesebrink tossed a scoreless eighth inning in relief.
  • Calvin Watkins started the game after pitching 3 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and issued five walks.  Ramasy Taliaferro (W, 1-0) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, earning the victory.  He limited DSU to two hits.

Game 2:  Mayville State (N.D.) 8, Dakota State (S.D.) 7 – FINAL

  • Both teams exploded for four runs in the opening inning of the four-game series finale.  The Trojans grabbed a 7-5 lead before the Comets rallied back to tie the game in the bottom third.  MSU added a run in the bottom fourth and held off DSU to complete the doubleheader sweep.
  • With Jackson O'Neal on first base with one out in the top first inning, Pribyl hit a single to advance O'Neal to second base.  A passed ball by the Comets allowed O'Neal advance to third base and Pribyl to second base.
  • Mason Macaluso added a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU in the top first.  Kropuenske recorded an RBI walk to score O'Neal for DSU's 1-0 lead.
  • Dakota State made it 2-0 in the top first after Drummond's RBI single to score Pribyl.  Josh Van Beek and Kimmes each added an RBI walk to balloon their lead to 4-0, scoring Macaluso and Kropuenske, respectively.
  • Mayville State answered with four runs in the bottom half of the first frame.  Jared McCorrister blasted a 3-run home run as the Comets trailed 4-3.  Gunner Garpestad added a double and advanced to third base after DSU's passed ball.  He scored home on the same play, caused by DSU's defensive error to knot the game at 4-4.
  • O'Neal led off the top second with a single, followed by Macaluso's walk with one out.  Kropuenske hit a 3-run home run to stretch DSU's lead to 7-4.  It was his seventh home run this season for the Trojans.
  • Satrom led off the bottom second with a double for Mayville State.  He advanced to third base after Villanueva's fly out to right field.  Wohl produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Satrom as MSU trimmed DSU's lead to 7-5.
  • Senden hit a 2-run home run in the bottom third inning as the Comets tied the game for second time at 7-7.
  • Mayville State regained their lead in the bottom fourth frame with a run scored.  Wohl and Hughes each led off with a walk.  Bordey Rocholl was caught stealing at third base, while Hughes advanced to second base on a stolen base.  Thiesen hit an RBI single to score Hughes as MSU earned an 8-7 lead.
  • The Comets retired the final three DSU batters in the seventh inning, closing out with the victory.
  • Kropuenske had a home run and drove in a game-high four runs for Dakota State.  Drummond had two singles and an RBI.  Pribyl added two singles.  O'Neal and Macaluso each had a single.  Van Beek reached on base by a walk twice.  Van Beek and Kimmes each recorded an RBI.
  • McCorrister had a home run and collected three RBIs for Mayville State.  Senden added a home run and two RBIs.  Garpestead had a double.  Theisen had a hit and a single.
  • Dakota State had seven hits in the game compared to Mayville State six hits.  The Trojans left eight runners on base, while the Comets had five runners left on base.
  • Kahlil Tilbury started the game on the pitching mound for DSU.  He gave up seven runs on five hits.  David Kirby (L, 1-1) recorded the setback, despite giving up a run in the fourth inning.  He worked for three innings in relief.
  • Preston Edinger tossed one out in the first inning, allowing two runs for MSU.  Alex DeCaro worked for one inning and gave up five runs on four hits.  Kenneth Stewart (W, 2-0) earned the win after pitching 5 2/3 scoreless innings, yielding the Trojans to two hits.  He recorded eight strikeouts.
