MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned home Friday afternoon to begin their six-game home stand at Flynn Field. The Trojans, who were on the road for 11 straight games prior to Friday's games, kicked off the second half portion of the North Star Athletic Association conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep over Presentation (S.D.) by the scores of 13-7 and 5-3.
Dakota State lifted their overall record to 15-16 and evened their North Star Athletic Association record to 8-8. Presentation fell to 6-32 overall record and 2-14 record in league.
DSU and PC concludes their NSAA's four-game series Saturday with another doubleheader, with the first game scheduled for 2 p.m.
Game 1: Dakota State (S.D.) 13, Presentation (S.D.) 7 – FINAL
- The first inning of the first game saw a total of seven runs scored and ten hits recorded combined by both teams.
- Presentation kicked off the game with four consecutive hits to produce two runs. Francisco Avena, Tyler Austin, and Zachary Edwards hit three straight singles. Edwards recorded an RBI single to score the first run of the game, scoring Avena for 1-0 PC lead.
- Kyle Angielski followed up with an RBI double to score Austin as the Saints' lead grew to 2-0 in the top first. The Trojans defense halted PC's scoring chances as they left bases loaded when the top first inning ended.
- Dakota State answered with five runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Ryan McDaniel and Jackson O'Neal led off with back-to-back doubles. O'Neal collected an RBI to score Alec Gannon, courtesy runner for McDaniel, as the Trojans cut PC's lead to 2-1.
- Jace Pribyl smashed a 2-run home run as the Trojans earned a 3-2 lead in the bottom first. It was his fourth home run of the season for DSU.
- Mason Macaluso followed up with a single and advanced to second base on the same play caused by PC's miscue. Chris Kropuenske hit an RBI single to score Macaluso as DSU's lead ballooned to 4-2.
- Josh Van Beek hit a single with two outs to advance Kropuenske to third base in the bottom first. Kropuenske scored home after the Saints committed a defensive error, making it 5-2 in favor of the Trojans.
- Tomas Frutos kicked off the top second frame with a double for Presentation. He advanced to third base after a sacrifice bunt by Avena. Austin hit an RBI single to score Frutos as PC trimmed DSU's lead to 5-3.
- The Trojans added a run in the bottom second. McDaniel led off with a single and advanced to second base on the same play caused by PC's miscue. Gannon, running for McDaniel, advanced to third base after Saints' wild pitch. O'Neal recorded an RBI ground out to score Gannon as DSU extended their lead to 6-3.
- DSU plated another run in the bottom third frame to widen their lead to 7-3. Kropuenske led off with a walk. Samuel Drummond drilled a double to advance Kropuenske to third base. Walker Hultgren recorded an RBI ground out to score Kropuenske.
- Frutos was hit-by-pitch with two outs in the top fourth for the Saints. He swiped to second base. Avena hit an RBI single to score Frutos as PC trailed 7-4.
- McDaniel blasted a lead-off home run in the bottom fourth to put DSU up 8-4.
- Presentation started the top fifth frame with three straight hits, starting with Edwards' double and Angielski's single. Evyn Booth hit a 3-run home run as the Saints cut the Trojans' lead to 8-7.
- Dakota State scored four times in the bottom fifth and never trailed for the rest of the game to secure the victory. Kropuenske led off with a walk. Drummond hit a single to advance Kropuenske to second base. Hultgren hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Kropuenske to third and Drummond to second base.
- Van Beek followed up with an RBI single to score Kropuenske for 9-7 DSU lead (Drummond advanced to third base).
- Drummond scored home, while Van Beek swiped to second base on a double steal attempt (DSU led 10-7) in the bottom fifth. McDaniel hit his second home run of the game, smashing a 2-run home run to extend the Trojans' lead to 12-7. It was McDaniel's third home run of the season for Dakota State.
- Drummond added a solo home run in the bottom sixth inning to widen DSU's lead to 13-7. It was his seventh home run this season, his ninth career home run at Dakota State.
- McDaniel fueled the Trojans by going perfect at the plate (4-of-4) with two home runs, double, single and drove in three runs. Drummond added a home run, double, single and an RBI. Pribyl recorded a home run, single and two RBIs. Macaluso and O'Neal each had two hits. Kropuenske had two walks and a single. Van Beek tallied two singles and an RBI.
- Gannon, Drummond, and Van Beek each swiped one base for DSU.
- Avena led the Saints by going 3-of-4 at the plate with three singles and an RBI. Austin, Edwards and Angielski each had two hits and an RBI. Booth had a home run, double and collected three RBIs. Tyus Stanley had two singles.
- Dakota State tallied 16 hits in the game compared to Presentation 14 hits. The Saints committed six defensive errors, while the Trojans did not commit an error.
- Devin DeBoer (W, 4-3) earned the victory after tossing five innings on the pitching mound for DSU. He allowed seven runs on 12 hits. Grant Svikulis (S, 1) earned the save after working four scoreless innings in relief. He retired 12 times in the last 14 batters in the game, yielding two hits. He struck out seven batters.
Game 2: Dakota State (S.D.) 5, Presentation (S.D.) 3 – FINAL
- The Trojans kicked off the second game with a run scored in the bottom first inning. Pribyl reached on base by a walk with two outs. Macaluso followed up with a single to advance Pribyl to second base. Kropuenske reached safely on base caused by PC's error, setting a bases loaded situation for DSU.
- Pribyl scored home after the Saints committed a passed ball, giving the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the bottom first.
- Booth led off the top second with a single, followed by Mathias Gonzalez's 2-run home as Presentation grabbed a 2-1 lead.
- Dakota State answered with three runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Hultgren was hit-by-pitch and advanced to second base by PC's wild pitch. After Van Beek's ground out to advance Hultgren to third base, Josh Addington hit an RBI single to score Hultgren to knot the game at 2-2.
- Addington advanced to second base on the same play caused by PC's defensive error in the bottom second. The Saints committed another defensive miscue as McDaniel reached safely.
- O'Neal followed up with a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans in the bottom second. Pribyl recorded an RBI walk to score Addington as DSU regained their lead to 3-2.
- Dakota State's lead ballooned to 4-2 as Macaluso added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Gannon (running for McDaniel) in the bottom second.
- Drummond reached on base by a walk to start the bottom third frame for DSU. He advanced to second base after PC's passed ball. Hultgren added a single to advance Drummond to third base. Van Beek hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Drummond, increasing Trojans' lead to 5-2.
- Booth hit a single, followed by R.J. Galvez's double with one out to advance Booth in the top fourth for Presentation. Booth scored home after DSU's passed ball as the Saints trailed 5-3.
- Dakota State secured the victory as Kahlil Tilbury retired the final three PC batters in the top seventh inning.
- Pribyl reached on base by a walk three times and produced an RBI for the Trojans. Macaluso, Van Beek, and Addington each added a single and an RBI. Hultgren had a single. Gannon, Pribyl, Drummond, Hultgren, and Addington each scored once.
- Gonzalez was 2-of-3 at the plate with a home run, single and drove in two runs for the Saints. Booth added two singles. Galvez had a double. Stanley recorded a single.
- PC outhit DSU 6-4 in the game. The Trojans left eight runners on base compared to the Saints six runners left on base.
- Chris Burke started the game on the pitching mound for Dakota State. He tossed 1 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on two hits. JD Kirchner (W, 1-0) earned his first victory of the season after working for 2 1/3 innings in relief. He gave up one run on two hits. Tilbury (S, 1) earned the save by shutting down the Saints in the final three innings, giving up two hits. He struck out five PC batters.
- Garrett Butcher (L, 1-3) recorded the setback after tossing two innings for Presentation. He allowed four runs (one unearned) on two hits. Samuel Garner pitched four innings in relief, yielding one run on two hits.
