DICKINSON, N.D. – Trailing 6-2 after four innings in the third game of the North Star Athletic Association softball tripleheader at North Softball Complex Saturday evening, Dakota State (S.D.) scored five unanswered runs including four runs in the top fourth inning to hold off Dickinson State (N.D.) for a 7-6 victory.
Dakota State improved to 14-27 overall record and 8-15 record in North Star contests. Dickinson State is 25-13 overall record an 14-8 NSAA record. It was Trojans' first win at Dickinson State since April 22, 2018, halting DaSU's seven-game losing skid in the series meeting.
The Trojans and the Blue Hawks will attempt to play the final game of the four-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (Central Time)/1 p.m. (Mountain Time), weather permitting.
Game 3: Dakota State (S.D.) 7, Dickinson State (N.D.) 6 – FINAL
- The Trojans plated two runs in the opening inning to grab the first lead of the game. Sarah Torres reached safely on base caused by Dickinson State's miscue. Mackenzie Sims and Xitlali Lopez hit back-to-back singles to set up a bases loaded situation.
- Lia Chan produced a 2-RBI single to score Torres and Sims to give DaSU a 2-0 early lead in the top first frame.
- DiSU answered with four runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Rhea Paiva led off with a walk and advanced to second base after Kennedy Kuntz's sacrifice bunt. Paiva advanced to third base as Jaya Allen reached on fielder's choice. Hailey Enriquez drilled a 2-RBI double to score Paiva and Allen to tie the game at 2-2.
- Dickinson State made it 4-2 in the bottom first after Dallis Mitchell's 2-run home run.
- The Blue Hawks extended their lead to 5-2 in the bottom second when Kuntz hit her second sacrifice of the game, recording an RBI sacrifice fly.
- Kuntz reached on base by a walk in the bottom fourth for DiSU. She swiped to second base. Hailey Enriquez hit an RBI single to score Kuntz, increasing their lead to 6-2.
- Lopez ended the Trojans' scoring drought with a lead-off solo home run in the top fifth inning, trailing 6-3. It was her fourth home run of the season, her 15th career home run at Dakota State (currently tied for fourth all-time home run in school history with Peyton Brokiewicz from 2016-19).
- Dakota State exploded for four runs in the top sixth inning to overtake the lead. Melissa Krapf was hit-by-pitch to start the inning. Rosie Philop reached safely on base caused by DiSU's defensive error and advanced Krapf to second base. Julia Anderson produced an RBI single to score Krapf as the Trojans cut the Blue Hawks' lead to 6-4 (Philop advanced to second base).
- Torres followed up with a single to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans in the top sixth. Mackenzie Sims reached safely on base after another defensive miscue committed by the Blue Hawks, allowing Philop to score as DaSU trailed 6-5.
- Dakota State's Lopez knotted the game at 6-6 with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Andersen in the top sixth frame (Torres advanced to third base and Sims to second base). Chan capped the inning with another RBI single to score Torres to give Dakota State a 7-6 lead.
- The Blue Hawks left two runners on base as the Trojans secured the victory in the final inning.
- Chan was 2-of-4 at the plate with two singles and collected three RBIs for Dakota State. Lopez added a home run, single and two RBIs. Andersen tallied two singles and an RBI. Philop had two singles. Sims recorded a hit and an RBI. Torres had a single and reached on base by a walk. Vinitzia Blanco and Madison Aldendifer each had a single.
- Enriquez was 3-of-4 at the plate with a double, two singles and tallied three RBIs for Dickinson State. Mitchell added a home run, single and two RBIs. Kuntz swiped two bases, as well as a single and RBI. Ashley Nash tallied two singles.
- The Trojans outhit the Blue Hawks 12-10 in the game. DiSU left nine runners on base, while DaSU had seven runners left on base.
- Lopez (W, 9-11) tossed a complete game victory in the pitching mound for Dakota State. She gave up six runs on 10 hits. She recorded five strikeouts. She is currently the third all-time pitching wins (26) at DaSU.
- Dickinson State used four different pitchers in the game. Madeline Peralta started the game and allowed two runs (one unearned) on three hits. Allen worked for 5 2/3 innings in relief, limiting the Trojans to five hits. She recorded five strikeouts.
- Paisley Garcia (L, 6-5) recorded the defeat for the Blue Hawks after working for an inning. She allowed three runs on two hits. Mitchell pitched for one out, giving up two unearned runs on two hits.
