Trojans split with Warriors, win NSAA baseball four-game series

FOREST CITY, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) earned another slugfest victory Saturday, defeating Waldorf (Iowa) 16-11 in the third game of the North Star Athletic Association baseball four-game series at Waldorf Baseball Field.  The Warriors closed out the series wit a 3-0 shutout over the Trojans.

It was the first North Star Athletic Association four-game series victory for DSU since April 21-22, 2018 at Dickinson State (N.D.).  The last time the Trojans went 3-1 record in the series with Waldorf was on April 29-May 1, 2016.

Dakota State is 12-11 overall record and 5-3 record in the North Star Athletic Association contests.  It was the best eight-game North Star conference start for the Trojans since the league formed in 2013-14.  Waldorf is 10-17 and 4-4 record in league.

DSU stays on the road Tuesday as they head to John Stella Field at Brown Park in Omaha, Neb. to take on the conference's leader Bellevue (Neb.).  The North Star conference doubleheader kicks off at 3 p.m.

Game 1:  Dakota State (S.D.) 16, Waldorf (Iowa) 11 – FINAL

  • The Warriors opened the game with a 2-0 lead in the bottom first inning.  Angle Mojica led off with a single and swiped to second base.  Alejandro Gonzales followed up with an RBI double to score Mojica for WU 1-0 lead.
  • After Gonzalez advanced to third base on DSU's wild pitch, Jack Muhleck hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Gonzalez to extend Waldorf's lead to 2-0 in the bottom first.
  • Dakota State answered with a pair of runs in the top third frame.  Walter Hultgren reached on base by a walk, followed by Ryan McDaniel's double to advance W. Hultgren to third base.
  • DSU tied the game at 2-2 in the top third as Jace Pribyl hit a 2-RBI single to score W. Hultgren and Alec Gannon, courtesy runner for McDaniel.
  • The Warriors scored once in the bottom half of the third inning, thanks to Muhleck's double.  Sergio Olivares reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive error, allowing Muhleck to score home to give WU a 3-2 lead.
  • The Trojans exploded for seven runs in the top fourth frame.  Chris Kropuenske kicked off with a double.  Esai Hernandez produced an RBI single to score Kropuenske as DSU knotted the game at 3-3.
  • Hernandez advanced to second base on WU's wild pitch.  Chris Burke drilled an RBI double to score Hernandez as DSU grabbed a 4-3 lead in the top fourth.
  • McDaniel was hit-by-pitch with two outs in the top fourth inning for Dakota State.  Jackson O'Neal reached safely on base after WU committed a defensive error, allowing Burke to score to widen DSU's lead to 5-3.
  • Another defensive error by the Warriors allowed Pribyl to reach safely on first base, Gannon scored home to make it 6-3 in favor of the Trojans in the top fourth (O'Neal advanced to third). 
  • Dakota State made it 7-3 in the top fourth when the Warriors committed a wild pitch, scoring O'Neal (Pribyl advanced to second base).  Mason Macaluso hit an RBI single to score Pribyl to balloon the Trojans' lead to 8-3.
  • Kropuenske hit his second double in the same inning, collecting an RBI to score Macaluso for DSU 9-3 lead in the top fourth inning.
  • WU scored once in the bottom fourth.  Mojica hit a double with one out.  Gonzalez was hit-by-pitch and recorded a double steal by Mojica and Gonzalez.  Thomas Callonch recorded an RBI ground out to score Mojica as the Warriors trailed 9-4 after four innings.
  • Dakota State added three runs in the top fifth frame.  Hernandez and Burke registered back-to-back hit-by-pitch.  W. Hultgren added a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans.
  • McDaniel produced an RBI fielder choice to score Hernandez for DSU 10-4 lead in the top fifth (Burke was forced out at third base).  Gannon (courtesy runner for McDaniel) and W. Hultgren advanced one base after WU's wild pitch.
  • Pribyl hit a 2-RBI single with two outs to score W. Hultgren and Gannon to widen the Trojans' lead to 12-4 in the top fifth.
  • Kropuenske and Samuel Drummond started the top sixth inning with back-to-back walks for DSU.  Kropuenske advanced to third base after Hernandez's fly out.  The Trojans extended their lead to 13-4 after Burke's RBI ground out to score Kropuenske (Drummond advanced to second base).
  • Dakota State recorded the biggest lead of the game at 14-4 after W. Hultgren hit an RBI single to score Drummond with two outs in the top sixth.
  • Waldorf started the bottom half of the sixth inning with a bases loaded situation after back-to-back singles by Mojica and Gonzalez followed by James Hook's walk.  Muhleck hit a 2-RBI single to score Mojica and Gonzalez as the Warriors trailed 14-6.
  • Hook and Muhleck each advanced one base after a wild pitch by the Trojans in the bottom sixth.  Olivares hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Hook as WU trimmed DSU's lead to 14-7.  After TarQuin Daley's single to advance Muhleck to third base, Easton Barrus reached safely on base after DSU's defensive miscue allowing Muhleck to score as Waldorf reduced their deficit down to six runs (DSU led 14-8).
  • The Warriors committed back-to-back defensive errors as Drummond and Hernandez reached safely on base in the top eighth inning.  Burke followed up with a 2-RBI single to score Hernandez and Drummond as the Trojans' lead grew to 16-8 (Burke advanced to second base on the same play).
  • Mojica hit a double with one out in the bottom ninth frame for WU.  Gonzalez blasted a 2-run home run as Waldorf trailed 16-10.
  • Hook followed up with a double for the Warriors in the bottom ninth.  He advanced to third base with two outs after Muhleck's ground out.  Hook scored from DSU's wild pitch (DSU led 16-11).
  • Olivares hit a single, while Daley reached safely on first after Trojans' defensive miscue.  The Trojans secured the game as Barrus was struck out looking by Jared Urbach.
  • Pribyl propelled DSU's offense by going 2-of-5 the plate with two singles and drove in a game-high five runs.  Kropuenske added two doubles and an RBI.  Burke had a double, single, and tallied four RBIs.  McDaniel, Macaluso, Hernandez and W. Hultgren each had a hit and an RBI.  Gannon and Hernandez each scored three runs. 
  • Mojica was perfect 5-of-5 with three doubles, two singles, two stolen bases, and scored four times for Waldorf.  Gonzalez added a home run, double, single and three RBIs.  Muhleck had two hits and three RBIs.  Olivares recorded two hits and two RBIs. 
  • The Warriors had 16 hits in the game compared to the Trojans 10 hits.  WU committed five defensive errors, while DSU had four defensive miscues.  The Trojans had seven runners left on base compared to the Warriors 14 runners left on base.
  • Trey Randel (W, 2-1) recorded the victory for Dakota State.  He allowed eight runs (two unearned) on 10 hits in five innings of work.  He struck out seven WU's batters.  Jacob Yaeger pitched a scoreless inning in relief.  Urbach closed the game in the final three innings, giving up three runs on five hits.  He recorded three strikeouts.
  • Nik Dodson (L, 1-5) tabbed the defeat after tossing four innings for Waldorf.  He gave up nine runs (five unearned) on seven hits.  AJ Oddo worked for one inning in relief, giving up five runs on one hit and issued three walks.  Jeff Roach pitched for three innings, allowing two unearned runs on two hits.  Jorge Ortega tossed a scoreless ninth inning in relief.

Game 2:  Waldorf (Iowa) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

  • Waldorf shut down Dakota State in the final game of the four-game series.  The Warriors held the Trojans hitless, while issuing four walks in the game.
  • After two-and-half scoreless innings, the Warriors scored the first runs of the game in the bottom third frame.  Barrus led off the inning with a double.  He advanced to third base after Hook's ground out to shortstop.  Dusty Roger reached on base by a walk.  He was caught stealing in a run-down between first and second base, allowing Barrus to score for 1-0 WU lead.
  • Waldorf plated two more runs in the bottom fourth.  Daley and Davis Churchman hit back-to-back singles with one out.  Both Daley and Churchman advanced one base after DSU's wild pitch. 
  • Daley scored home on another wild pitch by the Trojans to make it 2-0 in favor of the Warriors in the bottom fourth frame.  After Barrus' walk, Hook hit an RBI single to score Churchman as Waldorf extended their lead to 3-0.
  • The Trojans left a runner on first base when the game ended, securing the victory for the Warriors.
  • Hernandez reached on base by a walk two times.  McDaniel and Kropuenske each had a walk. 
  • Churchman was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and a run scored.  Hook had a single and an RBI.  Barrus had a double.  Daley had a single.
  • Both teams left five runners on base.
  • Kahlil Tilbury (L, 1-1) took the loss, despite tossing a complete game for Dakota State.  He gave up three runs on six hits and struck out four Warrior batters in six innings.
  • Sam Jones (W, 2-2) tossed a complete game shutout victory for Waldorf.  He recorded seven strikeouts and issued four walks.
