NSAA baseball conference leader Bellevue (Neb.) takes two from Dakota State (S.D.)

OMAHA, Neb. – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to hold on to their lead in after four innings as Bellevue (Neb) exploded for 11 unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings, earning a 17-7 victory in seven innings in the first game of the mid-week North Star Athletic Association baseball doubleheader at John Stella Field at Brown Park Tuesday afternoon.  The Bruins stretched its winning streak to seven games after holding off the Trojans 3-2 in the second game.

Dakota State fell to 12-13 overall record and 5-5 record in league play.  Bellevue, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, lifted their overall record to 26-10 and currently leads the North Star with an 8-2 record.

Both teams will play their second NSAA doubleheader at Flynn Field on April 20.

The Trojans conclude their 11-game road stretch on Friday and Saturday, continuing their North Star action with a four-game series with Mayville State (N.D.).  The series begin on Friday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and another doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m., held at Scott Berry Field on the campus of Mayville State University.

Game 1:  (RV) Bellevue (Neb.) 17, Dakota State (S.D.) 7 – FINAL/7 innings

  • Dakota State jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top second inning of the first game.  Chris Kropuenske hit a single with one out.  Samuel Drummond blasted a 2-run home run to give Trojans a 2-0 lead.  It was his sixth home run of the season and his eighth career home run at DSU.
  • The Trojans ballooned their lead to 4-0 in the top third frame with another 2-run home run.  Jackson O'Neal hit a single with two outs, followed by Jace Pribyl's 2-run home run.  It was Pribyl's third home run of the season.
  • Bellevue answered with a pair of 2-RBI singles in the bottom third inning.  With runners on third and second bases with one out, Riley Baasch hit a 2-RBI single as the Bruins cut DSU's lead to 4-2.
  • With bases loaded situation in the bottom third after a double by Josh Vaughan followed by Rigo Duarte's walk, Chaz Lopez hit a 2-RBI single to score Vaughan and Baasch to knot the game at 4-4.   
  • DSU plated three runs in the top half of the fourth inning to regain their lead.  Kropuenske led off with a walk.  Drummond followed up with a single to advance Kropuenske to second base.  Kropuenske advanced to third base on the same play caused by BU's defensive error.
  • Esai Hernandez hit an RBI ground out to score Kropuenske as the Trojans regained their lead to 5-4 in the top fourth (Drummond advanced to second base). 
  • Walker Hultgren followed up with a single to advance Drummond to third base for DSU in the top fourth.  The Trojans made it 6-4 as Shain Kimmes recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Drummond. 
  • After W. Hultgren advanced to second base on BU's wild pitch, Chris Burke drilled an RBI double to score W. Hultgren to widen DSU's lead to 7-4 in the top fourth.
  • Daniel Teasley hit a single and Conner Barnett added a single with one out to start the bottom fourth for Bellevue.  Cody Banks hit an RBI single, followed by Bassch's RBI double to score Teasley and Barnett as the Bruins trailed 7-6 after four innings.
  • BU exploded for seven runs in the bottom fifth frame, highlighted by four extra-base hits including a pair of home runs.  Zach Diehl led off with a double and scored home by Teasley's RBI triple as the Bruins tied the game at 7-7.
  • Bellevue made it 8-7 after Davis' RBI single to score Teasley in the bottom fifth.
  • Baasch hit a 3-RBI inside the park home run as the Bruins stretched its lead to 11-7.  Lopez added a 2-run home run to make it 13-7 by the end of the fifth inning.
  • Bellevue ballooned their lead to 16-7 after a 3-run home blast by Barnett in the bottom sixth.  Lopez recorded an RBI single for a 17-7 lead to score Vaughan, who hit a double.
  • The Trojans could not score in the top seventh to extend the game, securing the victory for the Bruins in a nine-inning contest.
  • Drummond had a home run, single and drove in two runs for Dakota State.  Pribyl added a home run and two RBIs.  Kropuenske had two hits.  Burke added a double, single and an RBI.  O'Neal and W. Hultgren each had a single. 
  • Baasch was 3-of-5 at the plate with a home run, double, single, and collected a game-high six runs for Bellevue.  Lopez added a home run, two singles and drove in five runs.  Vaughan registered two doubles and two singles.  Davis had two hits and an RBI.  Teasley had three hits and an RBI. 
  • The Bruins poured in 20 hits in the game compared to the Trojans 10 hits.  BU left nine runners on base, while DSU left three runners on base.
  • Grant Svikulis started the game on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He worked for 2 2/3 innings and allowed four unearned runs on four hits.  Kevin Krumm (L, 1-1) took the defeat after tossing 2 1/3 innings in relief, giving up nine runs on 11 hits.  Ty Christensen pitched the sixth inning in relief.
  • Bailey Link tossed the first three innings for Bellevue.  He gave up four runs on four hits.  Alexandro Celiceo (W, 5-0) earned the victory after working four innings in relief.  He allowed three runs on six hits and recorded five strikeouts.

Game 2:  (RV) Bellevue (Neb.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL

  • Dakota State grabbed the first lead for the second straight game.  Ryan McDaniel led off the game with a walk.  Alec Gannon, courtesy runner for McDaniel, advanced to second base after a failed pickoff attempt by the Bruins.  O'Neal followed up with an RBI double to score Gannon to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
  • Bellevue scored twice in the bottom half of the second inning.  Vaughan led off with a single.  Duarte reached on base by a walk and advanced Vaughan to second base.  DSU recorded a double play by Josh Addington, Kropuenske and Hernandez, defensively, after Lopez's at-bat, advancing Vaughan to third base.
  • Diehl and Teasley recorded back-to-back walks with two outs to set up a bases loaded situation for BU in the bottom second.  Davis was hit-by-pitch and produced an RBI to score Vaughan as the Bruins tied the game at 1-1.
  • Bellevue made it 2-1 after Barnett hit an RBI single to score Diehl in the bottom second.
  • Banks hit an RBI single in the bottom fourth frame to extend BU's lead to 3-1.
  • Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring chances in the top fifth inning, leaving runners on third and second bases. 
  • The Trojans ended their scoring drought with a run scored in the top sixth inning.  Burke was hit-by-pitch with two outs.  Addington followed up with a walk and advanced Burke to second base.  McDaniel hit an RBI single to score Burke as DSU trailed 3-2.
  • DSU left runners on third and first bases when the game ended in the top seventh inning, securing the victory for BU.
  • O'Neal was 2-of-4 at the plate with a double, single and an RBI for Dakota State.  Kropuenske added a double and a walk.  McDaniel had a single and an RBI.  Burke recorded a single.
  • Vaughan was 2-of-2 at the plate with two singles for Bellevue.  Davis had a triple and an RBI.  Barnett and Banks each had two hits and an RBI. 
  • The Bruins collected eight hits in the game compared to the Trojans five hits.  DSU left 11 runners on base, while the Bruins left eight runners on base.
  • Carver Hultgren (L, 1-3) recorded the defeat after tossing four innings on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He allowed three runs on seven hits.  David Kirby pitched two scoreless innings in relief, limiting the Bruins to one hit.
  • Charlie Patterson (W, 5-0) earned the victory after pitching 5 2/3 innings for Bellevue.  He gave up two runs (one unearned) on four hits and recorded seven strikeouts.  Elijah Johnson worked for two outs in relief, collecting three strikeouts.  Corey Jackson (S, 1) earned the save by recording the final two outs by strikeouts.
