OMAHA, Neb. – Dakota State (S.D.) and Bellevue (Neb.) were originally scheduled to play the North Star Athletic Association softball doubleheader Wednesday but had moved to Tuesday late afternoon at Roy Smith Field. The first game saw a pitcher's duel between DSU and BU, however, the Bruins' offense exploded for nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to earn a 9-1 victory. Bellevue completed the doubleheader sweep with a 10-2 five-inning game two victory.
Dakota State's four-game winning streak came to end, falling to 10-18 overall record and 4-6 NSAA conference record. Bellevue, which remained undefeated at home with an 8-0 record, raised their overall record to 22-13 and 8-2 record in league. Both teams will meet again for the second NSAA meeting on April 21 at Thue Field.
The Trojans continue their 14-game road stretch Thursday with a non-conference doubleheader at Briar Cliff (Iowa). The first game is set to start at 3 p.m., held at Bishop Muller Field on the campus of Briar Cliff in Sioux City, Iowa.
Game 1: Bellevue (Neb.) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 – FINAL/5 innings
- Both teams did not score in the first inning of the first game.
- Dakota State grabbed the first lead of the game at 1-0 in the top second frame, thanks to a lead-off solo home run by Vinitzia Blanco. It was her fourth home run this season, her sixth career home run at DSU.
- Xitlali Lopez held the Bruins hitless through the first three innings before recording the first hits of the game in the bottom fourth inning.
- After the first two outs were recorded in the bottom fourth, BU produced three runs from a pair of home runs. Allison O'Driscoll blasted a solo home run as the Bruins knotted the game at 1-1, which was the first BU hit of the game.
- Bellevue continued its scoring sure as Laura Jurek hit a single in the bottom fourth. Amanda Placzek followed up with a 2-run home run to earn a 3-1 lead.
- The Bruins exploded six runs and seven hits to end the game in bottom fifth frame. Maricela Egan led off with a single. Ellie Bliemeister reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive error, allowing Egan to advance to third (Bliemeister advanced to second base on the same play).
- Bellevue's lead grew to 5-1 after Lauren Russell's 2-RBI single in the bottom fifth (Russell advanced to second on the throw). Russell swiped to third base. O'Driscoll added an RBI double to score Russell to extend BU's lead to 6-1.
- The Bruins' offense attack continued as Jurek hit an RBI single to score O'Driscoll for 7-1 lead. Placzek added a double to advance Jurek to third base. Alyssa Morbach reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive error, setting up a bases loaded situation for BU.
- Sydni Haugaard and Egan hit back-to-back RBI singles to secure the victory for Bellevue in the bottom fifth inning.
- Blanco had a home run and an RBI for Dakota State. Elizabeth Whitesides and Xi. Lopez each added a single. Madison Aldendifer, Sarah Torres, and Lia Chan reached on base by a walk.
- Placzek recorded a home run, double and drove in two runs for Bellevue. Jurek and Egan each added two hits and an RBI. Russell had a hit and two RBIs. O'Driscoll and Young each collected a hit and an RBI.
- BU pound out 11 hits in the final two innings of the game. DSU was held to three hits. The Trojans left four runners on base compared to the Bruins three runners left on base.
- Xi. Lopez (L, 5-7) recorded the setback after working four-plus innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She gave up seven runs (one unearned) on seven hits. She recorded five strikeouts. Rosie Philop worked for one out in relief, allowing two runs on four hits.
- Jurek (W, 12-5) tossed a complete game victory for Bellevue. She yielded the Trojans to one run on three hits and registered six strikeouts.
Game 2: Bellevue (Neb.) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/5 innings
- Bellevue poured in 10 runs in the first three innings of the second game and never trailed.
- Egan led off the bottom first frame with a walk for Bruins, followed by Bliemeist's single to advance Egan to second base. Russell hit a 3-run home run to give Bellevue a 3-0 early lead.
- The Bruins continued its scoring surge as O'Driscoll hit a single, while Placzek and Jurek recorded back-to-back walks to set up a bases loaded situation.
- BU ballooned their lead to 5-0 when Kelsey Arnold hit an RBI single to score O'Driscoll and Morback's RBI walk to score Placzek.
- Placzek hit a 2-run home run to widen Bellevue's lead to 7-0 in the bottom second frame.
- Bellevue plated three more runs in the bottom third, highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles by Bliemeist and Young. BU's lead grew to 10-0 by the end of the third inning.
- The Trojans snapped their scoring drought with a pair of runs in the top fourth inning. Xi. Lopez reached safely on base by BU's defensive miscue (advanced to second on the same play). Blanco followed up with a single to advance Julia Andersen (pinch runner for Xi. Lopez) to third base.
- Olivia Peterson, pinch runner for Blanco, swiped to second base in the top fourth for DSU. Xo. Lopez produced an RBI single to score Andersen as the Trojans trailed 10-1 (Peterson advanced to third).
- Melissa Krapf added an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Peterson as Dakota State trimmed Bellevue's lead to 10-2 in the top fourth.
- DSU left a runner on second base when the game ended in the top fifth, securing the win for BU.
- Xo. Lopez was 2-of-2 at the plate with two singles and an RBI for Dakota State. Krapf added a single and an RBI. Whitesides, Torres, and Blanco each had a hit. Aldendifer reached on base by a walk.
- Russell tallied two hits and drove in three runs for Bellevue. Bliemeister added two hits and an RBI. Placzek had a home run and two RBIs. Arnold and Young each had a hit and an RBI.
- BU outhit DSU 11-6 in the game. The Bruins left six runners on base compared to the Trojans three runners left on base.
- Xo. Lopez (L, 1-4) recorded the defeat after working in the first inning with one out for Dakota State. She allowed five runs on four hits. Aldendifer worked for 1 2/3 innings in relief, giving up two runs on three hits. Xi. Lopez tossed the final two innings, allowing three runs on three hits.
- Savannah Gunn (W, 7-5) earned a complete game victory for Bellevue. She gave up two unearned runs on six hits.
