(RV) Blue Hawks defeat Trojans 27-7 in NSAA football season opener

MADISON, S.D. – The North Star Athletic Association kicked off their 6-game football schedule Saturday afternoon.  Dakota State (S.D.) hosted the seven-time defending champion Dickinson State (N.D.) at Trojan Field.  The Blue Hawks won the defensive battle by the score of 27-7, where the game saw a combined seven turnovers by both teams (DiSU committed three interceptions, while DaSU recorded four turnovers in the game).

Dakota State fell to 2-3 overall record and 0-1 NSAA conference record.  Dickinson State, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Football Coaches' Top 25 national poll, won their third straight game to improve to 3-2 overall record and 1-0 NSAA conference record.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Dakota State committed a turnover on the first play of the opening drive.  Matt Anderson forced the fumble and was recovered by Jackson Willems at DaSU's 16-yard line as the Blue Hawks began their drive with 14 minutes, 43 seconds on the clock.
  • The Trojans' defense halted the Blue Hawks from scoring a touchdown as they moved the ball to DaSU's 1-yard line.  DiSU committed a 10-yard penalty and had to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Wade James to give DiSU a 3-0 led with 11:55 left in the first quarter.
  • After the Trojans were forced to punt on the next drive, Dickinson State committed a turnover on the ensuing possession.  DaSU's Marcis Hausman caught his first career interception as DaSU regained possession on their own 17-yard line with 6:19 to go in the first.
  • Dakota State committed their second turnover in the first quarter as Brock Jones picked up an interception on DaSU's 30-yard line with 5:33 on the clock.
  • The Blue Hawks ignited the drive with a 28-yard pass from Aaron White to Noah Sickler to DaSU's 2-yard line on the next play. 
  • Alec Lovegren rushed for a 4-yard touchdown to balloon DiSU's lead to 9-0 with 4:29 left.  James followed up with a successful PAT extra-point kick for a 10-0 lead.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Dakota State kicked off the second quarter with seven plays for 27 yards in 4:04 and was unable to continue their drive.  Noah Karwacki recorded a 55-yard punt to DiSU's 4-yard line while Isaiah Kludt returned a 56-yard punt to DaSU's 40-yard line with less than 11 minutes to go.
  • The Blue Hawks followed up with six plays for 40 yards in 2:46 with another touchdown.  White threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Conor McCarvel with 8:10 left before halftime.  James added the PAT extra-point kick to widen DiSU's lead to 17-0.
  • The Trojans committed a turnover on the next drive as the Blue Hawks recovered the ball on DaSU's 19-yard line with 7:57 on the clock.  DaSU's defense would halt DiSU from scoring, turning the ball on downs with 6:52 left before halftime on DaSU's 18-yard line.
  • Dakota State prevented another scoring chance by Dickinson State near the end of the first half.  Mason Lloyd caught an interception in the end zone as DaSU regained possession with 25 seconds on the clock.
  • The Blue Hawks outgained the Trojans 165-7 in the first thirty minutes of the game.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Both teams were forced to punt on the first possession of the second half.  After Karwacki's 62-yard punt to DiSU's 25-yard line, the Blue Hawks answered with a 71-yard touchdown pass from Whit to Sickler with 8:28 on the clock.  James added the PAT extra-point kick to make it 24-0 in favor of DiSU.
  • Karwacki hit the game-long 70 punts with 3:02 left in the third period for Dakota State.
  • Dickinson State was forced to punt on the following drive.  The Trojans committed a turnover during the punt return as Daron Brown recorded a fumble recovery at the 50-yard line near the end of the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Dickinson State started the fourth quarter, committing a turnover.  Robert Cage caught an interception at DaSU's 30-yard line with 13:57 remaining.
  • James hit a 53-yard field goal with 4:38 left in the game, ballooning DiSU's lead to 27-0.
  • Gavin Holland fueled the Trojans with a 22-yard rush on the first play of the ensuing possession.  Facing a fourth-and-4 situation on DiSU's 34-yard line, Cameron McKeon connected to Dajshon Keel for 33 yards to DiSU's 1-yard line.
  • McKeon threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Derick Siemonsma with 56 seconds remaining in the game.  Karwacki added the PAT extra-point kick as the Trojans trailed 27-7.
  • Dakota State used 10 plays for 75 yards in 3:42 in the scoring drive.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Holland rushed 10 times for 40 yards for Dakota State.  Tyce Ortman added 13 rushes for 21 yards. 
  • Trojan McKeon threw for 52 yards with a touchdown.  Keel caught three passes for 42 yards.  Austin Lake added a 5-yard reception, while Siemonsma had two catches and a touchdown.
  • Karwacki finished the game with 10 punts for 399 total yards (39.9 yards per punt) for the Trojans. 
  • Lloyd, Cage, and Hausman each registered an interception for Dakota State.
  • Jeremiah 'JJ' Beck led the Trojans with a game-high 17 tackles.  He had a quarterback sack of eight yards loss.  Gustavo Bonilla added 12 tackles.  Brooks Jansen tallied eight tackles.  Devonte Murphy and Cody Brown each added seven tackles.  Brown and Caleb Dwyer each had a quarterback sack.
  • Beck, Bonilla, Jansen, Mruphy, Brown, Max Sonne, Blake Duran, Chris Guipi-Bopala, Cooper Maras, and Dwyer each recorded a tackle-for-loss.  Cage, Duran, Skogerboe, and Collin Brueggeman each recorded a broken-up pass.
  • White was 17-of-29 for 207 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Dickinson State.  Bridger Grovon added 27 passing yards.
  • The Blue Hawks had nine different receivers recorded a reception, paced by Sickler with four receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown.  McCarvel added five catches for 51 yards and a touchdown.  Kaden Kuntz had four catches for 37 yards.
  • Lovegren rushed 14 times for 48 yards and a touchdown for the Blue Hawks. 
  • White recorded six punts for 230 yards (38.3 yards per punt) for DiSU.
  • Jones had an interception for Dickinson State.  Matt Anderson led the defense with eight tackles and three tackles-for-loss of 14 yards.  He had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
  • JaQuawhann Booth had seven tackles and 1.5 sacks for 15 yards loss for the Blue Hawks.

TEAM COMPARISONS

  • Dickinson State recorded 323 total offensive yards and held Dakota State to 95 total offensive yards.
  • The Blue Hawks threw for 234 yards compared to the Trojans 52 passing yards. 
  • DiSU rushed for 89 yards in 42 attempts.  DaSU ran 34 times for 43 yards.
  • Dickinson State recorded 16 first downs compared to Dakota State seven first downs.  The Blue Hawks converted 8-of-19 third down plays, while the Trojans were 2-of-13 on third down situations.
  • The Blue Hawks retained the ball for 32 minutes, 21 seconds.  The Trojans maintained possession for 27 minutes, 39 seconds.
