VALLEY CITY, N.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) took advantage of Valley City State's (N.D.) fourth quarter trio of turnovers in the North Star Athletic Association football contest, scoring 22 points from those turnovers to rally back for a 31-17 road victory. It was the first road victory, as well as first North Star conference win of the season for the Trojans.
Dakota State evened their overall record to 3-3 and 1-1 record in the North Star conference games. Valley City State fell to 1-4 overall record and was playing their first NSAA contest this season after taking a bye week last week.
It was the first win in Valley City since Oct. 21, 2017, for the Trojans. DSU also scored its season-high points with 31 points.
FIRST QUARTER
- The Trojans were forced to punt on the first drive of the game. The Vikings moved the ball to DSU's 29-yard line before DSU halted VCSU on their fourth-and-four situation. Dakota State regained the possession with seven minutes, fifty-eight seconds left on the clock in the first.
- DSU answered with 10 plays for 61 yards in 6:13 on the ensuing possession, highlighted by a personal foul penalty by the Vikings and an 11-yard rush by Gavin Holland. The Trojans had to settle for a 27-yard field goal by Noah Karwacki, earning a 3-0 lead with 1:45 left in the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- Starting their next drive from the end of the first quarter through the early second quarter for the Vikings, Justice Bice rushed for 25 yards to DSU's 20-yard line.
- VCSU had to settle for a 36-yard field goal by Rodrigo Castaneda to knot the game at 3-3 with 12:04 on the clock. The Vikings recorded 10 plays for 49 yards in 4:41 in the scoring drive.
- Dakota State committed a turnover on the kick-off. Valley City State's Riley Gerhardt forced the fumble and was recovered by Shayden Luna on DSU's 30-yard line.
- Taylor Simmons kicked off the drive with a 15-yard rush to DSU's 15-yard line for the Vikings. Five plays later, Simmon rushed for a 4-yard touchdown to give VCSU a 9-3 lead with 9:18 to go in the second.
- Castaneda hit a successful PAT extra-point kick to extend the Vikings' lead to 10-3.
- The Trojans answer with a touchdown on the ensuing drive, ignited by a 21-yard pass from Zach Brooks to Austin Lake to DSU's 48-yard line.
- Facing a third-and-7 situation on VCSU's 49-yard line, Brooks connected to Tyce Ortman for 15 yards to VCSU's 34-yard line.
- Brooks threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Cole Sylliaasen with 4:43 left before halftime. Karwacki's PAT extra-point kick was no good as the Trojans trailed 10-9.
THIRD QUARTER
- Dakota State and Valley City State were unable to score in the third quarter. VCSU held on to a 10-9 lead.
- The Trojans started their drive on their own 16-yard line with 7:07 on the clock. DSU converted a third-and-4 situation on DSU's 22-yard line with a 41-yard pass to Derrick Siemonsma to VCSU's 34-yard line.
- Dakota State was unable to convert a fourth down situation on VCSU's 34-yard line, turning the ball on downs with 3:16 left in the third. The Trojans registered seven plays for 50 yards in 3:51 in the drive.
FOURTH QUARTER
- The Trojans were forced to punt to kick off the fourth quarter on their 10-yard line. Valley City State started the next drive with 14:48 remaining on DSU's 36-yard line.
- Noah Chambers threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Austin Young to balloon VCSU's lead. Castaneda's PAT extra-point kick was good to give Valley City State a 17-9 lead with 13:23 left.
- DSU had to punt on the next drive after registering five plays for 33 yards in 5:01. Karwacki punt for 36 yards to VCSU's 7-yard line. VCSU Simmons fumbled the ball as the Trojans regained possession as Marcis Hausman recovered the fumble on VCSU's 7-yard line.
- Dakota State quickly scored on the next play as Ortman rushed for a 7-yard touchdown with 8:22 to go in the game and added the 2-point succesful try to tie the game at 17-17.
- After the Vikings committed a penalty during the kick-off return, Devonte Murphy forced a fumble on VCSU's Chambers. Murphy recovered the fumble on VCSU's 1-yard line as DSU retained possession with 8:05 remaining.
- Brooks rushed for a 1-yard touchdown on the next play. Karwacki hit a successful PAT extra-point kick as the Trojans regained their lead at 24-17.
- DSU scored 14 points in 17 seconds.
- Valley City State recorded eight plays for 44 yards in 4:18 on the ensuing possession. The Vikings committed their third turnover of the fourth quarter as DSU's Mason Lloyd intercepted VCSU Chambers' pass on DSU's 24-yard line.
- Lloyd returned the interception for 36 yards to VCSU's 40-yard line as DSU regained possession with 3:47 remaining.
- Facing a fourth-and-2 situation on VCSU's 32-yard line, Brooks threw a 20-yard pass to Siemonsma that resulted a first down on VCSU's 12-yard line.
- On third-and-7 situation on VCSU's 9-yard line, Dylan Johnson ran for seven yards that resulted in another first down for the Trojans.
- Brooks rushed for a 1-yard touchdown to balloon DSU's lead with 1:06 remaining. Karwacki's PAT extra point kick was good as Dakota State's lead grew to 31-17, securing the victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brooks finished the game by going 9-of-16 for 176 yards and a touchdown for Dakota State. He also had two rushing touchdowns. Seven different DSU players recorded a reception in the game, led by Siemonsma with two catches for 61 yards.
- Sylliaasen had a 21-yard touchdown reception. Lake also had a 21-yard catch. Travis Rebstock and Ortman each had a 15-yard catch. Holland recorded two catches for 11 yards.
- Ortman rushed 17 times for 70 yards with a touchdown for DSU. Holland added nine rushes for 23 yards.
- Lloyd had an interception return of 31 yards for the Trojans. He also tallied three tackles.
- Jeremiah 'JJ' Beck led DSU's defense with nine tackles. Gustavo Bonilla added eight tackles and a break-up. Brooks Jansen recorded six tackles. Max Sonne and Murphy each had five tackles. Blake Duran, Jay Skogerboe, and Collin Brueggeman each recorded four tackles.
- Murphy had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery for the Trojans.
- Chambers was 13-of-21 for 134 yards with a touchdown and an interception for Valley City State. He ran 16 times for 45 yards. Dominic Sotomayer had four receptions for 43 yards. Young had three catches for 33 yards and a touchdown.
- Bice ran 12 times for 56 yards for the Vikings. Simmons added six rushes for 33 yards and a touchdown.
- Gerhardt collected a game-high 18 tackles for VCSU. He also had 2.5 quarterback sacks of 15.5 yards loss and three tackles-for-loss of 16.5 yards loss. He had a forced fumble. Vance Dumas added nine tackles. Dustin Kasowski and Ashton Raquino each had seven tackles. George Mageo registered a quarterback sack.
TEAM COMPARISONS
- Dakota State outgained Valley City State 278-268 in the game. Both teams recorded 57 offensive plays.
- The Trojans outpassed the Vikings 176-134. VCSU rushed for 134 yards compared to DSU 102 rushing yards.
- Valley City State collected 15 first downs. Dakota State had 14 first downs.
- The Trojans converted 6-of-14 on third downs. The Vikings were 5-of-13 on third down situation.

Dakota State returns home for another North Star Athletic Association contest. The Trojans host Presentation (S.D.) in the annual Rushin' for a Cure football game, raising cancer awareness during the month of October. Fans are encouraged to wear pink colors clothing to the game. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. at Trojan Field in Madison, S.D.
Valley City State remains home as they host Iowa Wesleyan in the NSAA contest at 1 p.m.
