DSU's fourth quarter outburst defeats Mayville State (N.D.) 38-24

MAYVILLE, N.D. – Dakota State's (S.D.) erased a 24-14 deficit after three quarter Saturday evening at Jerome Berg Field, roaring back with a 24-0 fourth-quarter outburst to swing back in the winning column with a 38-24 road North Star Athletic Association victory over Mayville State (N.D.).  It was the eighth straight victory in the all-time series meeting for DSU, lifting their all-time series record to 21-14 record over MSU.

It was the sixth straight victory at Jerome Berg Field for the Trojans, pouring in a season-high 38 points Saturday.  The Trojans faced an opponent from the NSAA conference who is coming off from a bye week for the third straight week (Valley City State, N.D. on Oct. 8 and Presentation, S.D. on Oct. 15).

Dakota State improved to 4-4 overall record and 2-2 NSAA conference record.  Mayville State fell to 3-5 overall record and remained winless in three NSAA contests (0-3 NSAA record).

FIRST QUARTER

  • Both teams were forced to punt on their first drive of the game.
  • With Mayville State starting their drive with 11 minutes, 10 seconds on the clock on their own 10-yard line, the Comets produced five first-downs and paved the way to their first scoring drive of the game.
  • MSU used 16 plays for 90 yards in nearly 10 minutes in their first scoring drive.  Tim Salmon threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Portillo with 1:17 left on the clock.  Braeden Lacombe added the PAT extra-point kick to put MSU up 7-0.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Mayville State used another long scoring drive in the second quarter after a pair of punts by both teams.
  • MSU started on their own 7-yard line with 10 minutes left before intermission.  After four straight rushing plays by Cole Dukart, Salmon completed three straight passes as the Comets moved the ball to DSU's 26-yard line.
  • Facing fourth-and-three situation on DSU's 21-yard line, Salmon threw a touchdown pass to Chance Danner with 4:14 on the clock.  Lacombe hit a successful PAT extra-point kick to balloon the Comets' lead to 14-0.
  • After DSU turned the ball on downs on MSU's 44-yard line on the ensuing possession, Dakota State was able to regain possession as Cody Brown intercepted Salmon's pass on MSU's 42-yard line.  He returned it for 11 yards with 1:04 to go before halftime.
  • The Trojans' starting drive pushed back to DSU's 46-yard line after an illegal block penalty during interception return.  Adin Jungers opened the drive with a 33-yard pass to Amari Hutson to MSU's 21-yard line, where DSU called a timeout with 56 seconds left.
  • After a penalty by the Trojans with the ball moving to MSU's 26-yard line, Jungers threw a 12-yard pass to Tyce Ortman to MSU's 14-yard line.
  • Dakota State quickly scored as Jungers connected to Cole Sylliaasen for a 14-yard touchdown with 22 seconds left.  Noah Karwacki hit a successful PAT extra point kick as the Trojans trailed 14-7.

THIRD QUARTER

  • DSU opened the third quarter with the first possession of the second half.  The Trojans marched down the field with 14 plays for 73 yards in nearly six minutes as they rallied back to knot the game. 
  • Facing third-and-6 on DSU's 30-yard line, Ortman rushed for 15 yards to extend their drive to DSU's 45-yard line.  DSU converted two more third-down plays, including a 11-yard reception by Michael Hybertson to MSU's 28-yard line.
  • Mayville State committed a pass interference, resulting in a first and goal on MSU's 3-yard line for Dakota State.  After a 3-yard rushing loss, Ortman rushed for a 6-yard touchdown with 9:22 left on the clock in the third.
  • Karwacki made the PAT extra-point kick as the Trojans tied the game at 14-14.
  • The Comets quickly scored on the next possession as Salmon connected to Reece Smith for a 75-yard touchdown pass.  Lacombe's PAT extra-point kick was good as MSU regained their lead to 21-14 with 8:31 left in the third quarter.
  • DSU was forced to punt on the next possession.  Karwacki hit a season-long punt of 74 yards to MSU's 3-yard line with 6:10 on the clock.
  • Mayville State answered with 10 plays for 79 yards in 3:49 as they had to settle for a 35-yard field goal by Lacombe, extending their lead to 24-14 with 2:21 remaining in the third.
  • Karwacki recorded a 45-yard punt as MSU started their next drive on their own 4-yard line with six seconds left.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Dakota State's defense recorded a safety as Gustavo Bonilla and Caleb Dwyer sacked MSU's Logan Hoff in the end zone with 14:15 remaining.  The Trojans trimmed the Comets' lead to 24-16.
  • The Trojans rallied back to tie the game on the ensuing possession as they registered 10 plays for 67 yards in four minutes.  Jungers threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Hybertson with 10:08 left in the game as DSU trailed 24-22.
  • Dakota State converted a successful 2-point PAT attempt as Jungers threw to Austin Lake in the end zone, tying the game at 24-24.
  • The Trojans' defense forced the Comets to punt on the following possession, regaining possession for DSU with 8:08 to go on DSU's 32-yard line.
  • Dakota State moved the ball down the field with 13 plays for 68 yards in 5:25 for their second straight scoring drive in the fourth quarter.  Jungers rushed for a 1-yard touchdown to grab their first lead of the game.  Karwacki's PAT extra point kick was good as the Trojans led 31-24 with 2:43 left.
  • Brown sacked MSU's quarterback Hoff to MSU's 20-yard line, forcing the Comets to call a timeout with 2:15 left in the game.
  • Facing third-and-20 situation for the Comets, Hoff threw a 13-yard pass to Javeion Davison to MUS's 20-yard line.
  • DSU halted MSU on the fourth down situation, turning the ball on downs as the Trojans regained their possession with 1:42 remaining.
  • With fourth-and-6 situation on MSU's 29-yard line, the Trojans sealed the victory as Jungers rushed for a 29-yard touchdown to balloon their lead to 37-24 with 34 seconds left in the game.
  • Karwacki added the PAT extra-point kick as DSU's lead grew to 38-24.
  • Dakota State outgained Mayville State 168-21 in total offensive yards in the final 15 minutes of the game.

BOX SCORE

  • Jungers finished the game by going 17-of-25 for 168 yards with two touchdowns for DSU.  He also added two rushing touchdowns after rushing 24 times for 93 yards. 
  • Jungers threw a pass to nine different receivers in the game, led by Dajshon Keel with four receptions for 53 yards.  Hutson had a 33-yard reception.  Slylliaasen and Hybertson each had two catches for 20 yards and a touchdown.
  • Ortman rushed 19 times for 59 yards with a touchdown for Dakota State.  He also had three receptions for 22 yards.
  • Karwacki converted all four PAT extra-point kicks for the Trojans.  He had five punts for 237 yards and averaged 47.4 yards per punt.  Four of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line.  Karwacki also had six kick-offs for 365 yards (60.8 yards per kick-offs), with two kick-offs being a touchback.
  • Dwyer led the Trojans with nine tackles.  Bonilla, Tamareon Foster, Jeremiah 'JJ' Beck, and Brown each added six tackles.  Brown had a quarterback sack and an interception return of 11 yards.
  • Robert Cage and Devonte Murphy each tallied five tackles for Dakota State. 
  • Salmon was 15-of-24 for 214 yards with three touchdowns and an interception for Mayville State.  He rushed four times for 24 yards.  Hoff was 4-of-6 for 26 yards.
  • Smith had a 75-yard touchdown reception for the Comets.  Danner added six catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.  Portillo had four receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown. 
  • Dukart ran 14 times for 52 yards for MSU.  He also had two catches for 26 yards.
  • Richard Shelton produced a game-high 20 tackles for Mayville State.  Danzele Navy added eight tackles.  Devon Woods had seven tackles and 2.5 tackles-for-loss of four yards.  Bailey Mullenberg recorded seven tackles and a quarterback sack.

TEAM COMPARISONS

  • Dakota State outgained Mayville State 329-307 in total offensive yards.
  • The Trojans produced 24 first downs in the game compared to the Comets 18 first downs.
  • DSU converted 11-of-19 on third down situations (58 percent).  MSU was 5-of-13 (38 percent) on third down plays.
  • Dakota State rushed for 161 yards and held Mayville State to 66 rushing yards.
