Trojans hold off Iowa Wesleyan with Karwacki's four field goals

MT. PLEASANT, Iowa Noah Karwacki tied for most single-game field goals made with four field goals (Don Simon versus Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1993) combined with Dakota State's stellar defense in 12-6 North Star Athletic Association victory over Iowa Wesleyan at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.  The Trojans remained perfect in all-time series meeting with Tigers (3-0), including the first meeting earlier this season at Trojan Field.

Dakota State established its first winning streak this season, winning their second straight game to lift their overall record to 5-4.  The Trojans moved into a sole possession for second place in the NSAA Football standings with a 3-2 record, holding a half-game lead over Waldorf (Iowa) and Valley City State (N.D.).  Iowa Wesleyan fell to 4-6 overall record and 2-3 NSAA conference record.

DSU wrapped up its road schedule with a 3-2 record, clinching its first road winning record since 2017.  The Trojans also won their third straight road contest for the first time since the end of 2019 season and the start of the 2020 season.

FIRST QUARTER

  • Dakota State was forced to punt on the first drive of the game.  Karwacki hit a 58-yard punt to IWU's 8-yard line with 13 minutes, 48 seconds on the clock.
  • The Tigers failed to punt on the next drive as the Trojans regained possession on IWU's 9-yard line with less than 12 minutes to go in the first quarter.
  • DSU had to settle for a 24-yard field goal by Karwacki for a 3-0 lead with 9:58 on the clock.
  • Iowa Wesleyan failed to convert a first down on their second drive of the game, forcing to punt.
  • Dakota State began their drive with 7:43 to go and moved the ball to IWU's 25-yard line after a 39-yard reception by Austin Lake from Josiah Vitale.  Vitale followed up with a 15-yard pass to Cooper McDermott to IWU's 10-yard line.
  • The Trojans had to settle for another 24-yard field goal from Karwacki, ballooning their lead to 6-0 with 5:01 left in the first quarter.
  • Dakota State halted Iowa Wesleyan on their fourth-and-1 situation on DSU's 44-yard line as the Tigers recorded an incomplete pass.  The Trojans regained possession with 48 seconds to go in the first.

SECOND QUARTER

  • Dakota State used 16 plays for 53 yards on the ensuing possessing for nearly seven minutes for their next score.  The Trojans were unable to score a touchdown after the Tigers' defense halted DSU at IWU's 1-yard line on first-and goal. 
  • Karwacki hit a 20-yard field goal to give DSU a 9-0 lead with 8:56 left before halftime.
  • Dakota State used another defensive stop on the next possession to regain control of the ball.  Facing fourth-and-13 situation on DSU's 34-yard line, Devonte Murphy and Caleb Dwyer sacked IWU's quarterback Zach Chevalier on DSU's 36-yard line with 5:23 to go in the second quarter.
  • The Trojans answered with another score on the next drive, highlighted by a 21-yard rush by Vitale to IWU's 35-yard line.
  • Karwacki made a 49-yard field goal to widen DSU's lead to 12-0 with 3:36 on the clock.  His 49-yard field goal tied for his season-long (at Waldorf on Sept. 17). 
  • Iowa Wesleyan rushed to snap their scoring drought near the end of halftime.  With the drive starting on their own 37-yard line with 51 seconds, the Tigers used 10 plays for 44 yards with 50 seconds as they settled for a 35-yard field goal by Lucas Mosqueda.
  • Dakota State led 12-3 by halftime.

THIRD QUARTER

  • Dakota State and Iowa Wesleyan struggled offensively to start the third quarter, recording punts by both teams.
  • The Tigers started their drive on their 25-yard line with 5:25 to go in the third quarter.  IWU recorded 11 plays for 51 yards in 4:14 before the Trojans halted their drive in the red zone.
  • With second-and-10 situation on DSU's 24-yard line, Jay Skogerboe intercepted Chevalier's pass on DSU's 7-yard line with 1:09 to go in the third.
  • Dakota State led 12-3 by the end of the third quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER

  • Chris Guipi-Bopala blocked IWU's punt on IWU's 46-yard line as Dakota State regained possession with 13:45 remaining in the game on IWU's 39-yard line.
  • The Trojans committed a turnover on the next drive as Joseph Pace recorded an interception on IWU's 13-yard line and returned it for 42 yards to DSU's 45-yard line.  DSU committed a penalty as IWU moved the ball to DSU's 30-yard line to start their drive with 11:38 to go.
  • The Tigers had to settle for a 35-yard field goal by Mosqueda with 7:58 remaining.
  • After trading punts for the rest of the fourth quarter before the Tigers mounted a comeback on the final drive.  With their drive starting with 36 seconds left on IWU's 47-yard line, Dwyer sacked Chevalier for a 3 yards loss to IWU's 44-yard line.
  • The Trojans secured the victory as Skogerboe intercepted Chevalier's pass on DSU's 17-yard line and returned it for 62 yards to IWU's 21-yard line with seven seconds left.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • DSU's Karwacki finished the game by making all four field goals for 12 points.  He also recorded six punts for 255 total yards, averaging 42.5 yards per punt.  He recorded the game-long 58 yards punt.  Three of his punts went inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
  • Karwacki added five kick-offs for 325 yards (64.8 yards per kick-off) with three touchbacks for Dakota State.
  • Skogerboe had two interceptions for 62 yards total return for the Trojans.  He also had a kick-off return of 17 yards. 
  • Jeremiah 'JJ' Beck led DSU's defense with 12 tackles.  Cooper Maras added nine tackles.  Dwyer had seven tackles and 1.5 sacks for four yards loss.  Murphy and Tamareon Foster each tallied six tackles.  Brown recorded five tackles and 1.5 sacks of five yards loss.
  • Vitale was 14-of-28 for 170 yards and rushed 12 times for 38 yards for Dakota State.  Lake caught two passes for 44 yards.  McDermott added three receptions for 42 yards.  Dajshon Keel had three receptions for 28 yards.  Cole Sylliaasen had three catches for 22 yards.
  • Gavin Holland rushed 20 times for 81 yards for DSU. 
  • Chevalier was 16-of-36 for 141 yards with two interceptions for Iowa Wesleyan.  Gavin Esquivel also went 8-of-10 for 71 yards.
  • Asaivien McWilliams caught six passes for 60 yards for the Tigers.  Tyler Ball added six receptions for 46 yards.  Jaden Harris had four catches for 29 yards.
  • Askia Moses ran nine times for 29 yards for IWU.  Stafford Lewis added five rushes for 22 yards.
  • Mosqueda made two field goals in the game for Iowa Wesleyan. 
  • Major Niccum led the Tigers with 13 tackles.  Moses Eason added 11 tackles.  Pace tallied eight tackles and recorded an interception return of 42 yards. 

TEAM COMPARISONS

  • Dakota State outgained Iowa Wesleyan 291-265 in total offensive yards. 
  • The Trojans rushed for 121 yards and limited the Tigers to 53 yards.  IWU passed for 212 yards, while DSU passed for 170 yards.
  • Dakota State produced 15 first downs to Iowa Wesleyan 14 first downs.  The Trojans converted 6-of-16 on third down situations (38 percent) compared to the Tigers 4-of-18 third downs (22 percent).
  • The Trojans recorded four sacks in the game, while the Tigers did not record a sack.
  • Dakota State held the ball for more than 30 minutes, while Iowa Wesleyan had the ball control for 28 minutes, 30 seconds.
