Mayville State (N.D.) rallies back to defeat Dakota State in NSAA volleyball five-set thriller

MAYVILLE, N.D. – Mayville State (N.D.) rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 3-2 victory over Dakota State (S.D.) in the North Star Athletic Association volleyball contest Friday evening at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.  The Trojans earned 25-21 and 27-25 victories for a 2-0 match lead before the Comets rallied back with 25-23, 27-25, and 15-10 wins.

Dakota State fell to 15-15 overall record an 5-6 NSAA conference record (tied for fourth in the NSAA conference standings with Presentation, S.D. after their 3-0 home setback to No. 16 ranked Bellevue, Neb. Friday).  Mayville State improved to 15-15 overall record and 6-5 NSAA conference record.

DSU concludes their road schedule Saturday afternoon, visiting Presentation (S.D.) in the North Star action at Strode Center in Aberdeen, S.D.  The junior varsity match starts at 12:30 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 2:30 p.m.

Mayville State (N.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL (21-25, 25-27, 25-23, 27-25, 15-10)

  • Mayville State opened the first set with 10-5 lead, capped by a kill from Elora Passa.
  • Dakota State roared with an 11-0 scoring outburst to earn a 16-10 lead, sparked by five kills from Brooklyn Grage
  • The Comets rallied back with an 11-5 scoring run to knot the first set at 21-21 after a block each by Cora Johnson and Nicole Kortan.
  • DSU closed the first set by scoring the final four points, thanks to a pair of blocks from Grage for a 25-21 victory and 1-0 match lead.
  • The Trojans outhit the Comets 15-11 in the first set.  Dakota State hit .154 (7 errors in 52 swings) compared to Mayville State .039 hitting percentage (9 errors in 51 attempts).
  • DSU and MSU battled back and forth in the second set, with the lead on greater than four points by the Comets.
  • Mayville State established a set point opportunity at 24-18, forcing Dakota State to call its timeout.
  • The Trojans answered by saving six set point chances by the Comets, rallied back to tie the second set at 24-24 after VonnaGail Schlechter's service ace.
  • After a service error by DSU to give Mayville State its' seventh set point chance, Dakota State used another strong closing run by scoring the final three points to grab a 2-0 match lead.
  • Hannah Viet smashed a kill followed by back-to-back kills from Madalyn Groft give DSU a 27-25 set two victory.
  • DSU hit .216 in the second set (17 kills with 6 errors in 51 attempts).  MSU registered a .180 hitting efficiency (15 kills with 6 errors in 50 swings).
  • Knotted at 10-10 in the third set, the Comets used a 7-1 scoring run to balloon their lead to 17-11 after a kill by Nicole Kortan.
  • Trailing 24-21, the Trojans saved two set points to cut the Comets' lead to 24-23 and forced MSU to call its second timeout of the set.
  • An attack error by DSU gave Mayville State its 25-23 set three victory and extended the match into the fourth set. 
  • Mayville State hit .125 (15 kills with 6 errors in 72 attempts) compared to Dakota State .080 hitting percentage (14 kills with 8 errors in 75 attempts).
  • DSU and MSU went through see-saw battle in the fourth set, with the lead no greater than three points in the first 33 rallies. 
  • With DSU leading 17-16, the Comets scored four straight points to earn a 20-17 lead after a block assist from Passa and Johnson.
  • Behind 21-18, the Trojans answered with a 5-1 scoring run to overtake a 23-22 lead.
  • MSU scored the next two points to overtake a 24-23 lead after Samantha Passa's kill.
  • Viet smashed a kill to tie the fourth set at 24-24 for the Trojans. 
  • At 25-25, Mayville Score scored the final two points to secure a 27-25 victory and forced the fifth and deciding set.
  • Both teams hit .106 in the fourth set.
  • Dakota State used a quick start in the fifth set, opening with a 4-1 lead after Viet's kill.
  • Mayville State stormed back with a 6-0 scoring run to overtake a 7-4 lead and never trailed to secure a 15-10 victory and 3-2 match win.
  • Viet led the Trojans with 15 kills and registered a match-high 10 blocks.  M. Groft posted a triple-double of 21 set assists, 12 digs, and 11 digs.  Maddi Langerock contributed 37 assists and a career-high 27 digs.
  • Grage tallied 14 kills for DSU.  She also had six blocks.  Sophia Vanden Bosch tallied 11 kills.
  • Peyton Groft produced a career-high 43 digs in the match, the fifth most digs in a single match in Trojan volleyball record book.  Macy Wetsch tallied a career-high 23 digs.  Schlechter added 16 digs and two service aces.
  • Dakota State also collected a season-high 142 digs, which is the second-most team single match digs in school history.
  • Kortan packed the Comets with 16 kills and five blocks.  S. Passa added 11 kills and six digs.  Ashly Pyburn had 15 kills.
  • E. Passa had a triple-double of 28 set assists, 14 kills, and 13 digs for MSU.  Rachel Hill added 26 set assists and 13 digs.
  • Payton Richter led Mayville State's defense with 47 digs.  Natalie Hadrava added 42 digs.  Emily Condon had 17 digs.
  • MSU racked up a total of 145 digs in the match.
  • Dakota State outhit Mayville State 64-61.  The Comets hit .113 (32 attack errors in 257 swings) compared to the Trojans .110 hitting percentage (35 errors in 263 attempts).
  • DSU registered 13 team blocks compared to MSU 10 team blocks.
