(RV) Trojans won 10th straight meeting with in-state rival Lancers

YANKTON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) continued its volleyball dominance with in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) Tuesday evening, ending their three-match losing skid with a 3-0 sweep at Cimpl Arena.  Set scores were 25-19, 25-21, and 25-22, giving the Trojans its 10th straight victory over the Lancers in the series meeting.

Dakota State, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, improved to 12-11 overall record.  The Trojans produced their 28th victory in the last 36 meetings with the Lancers.  Mount Marty, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, fell to 6-11 overall record.

The Trojans won the junior varsity match by the scores of 25-20, 24-26, and 16-14 over the Lancers.

DSU concludes their six-match road swing later this week as they resume to the North Star Athletic Association conference, visiting the conference's co-leader No. 8 ranked Viterbo (Wis.) on Thursday evening.  First serve is set for 7 p.m. at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium in La Crosse, Wis.

(RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Mount Marty (S.D.) 0 – FINAL (25-19, 25-21, 25-22)

  • After falling behind 7-4 in the opening set, Sydney Schell ignited DSU's 8-0 monstrous run with back-to-back kills.  The Trojans took advantage of five straight attack errors by the Lancers and capped the run with another kill by Schell for Dakota State's 12-7 lead.
  • MMU could get no closer than three points at 15-12 after a service ace from Erika Langloss. 
  • VonnaGail Schlechter hit a service ace to widen DSU's lead to 22-15.  Vanessa Schroeder smashed a kill to secure a 1-0 match lead after the Trojans secured the first set at 25-19.
  • Dakota State hit .184 (13 kills with 6 errors in 38 swings) in the first set and held Mount Marty to .098 hitting efficiency (11 kills with 7 errors in 47 attempts).
  • DSU led 12-10 in the second set before MMU went on a 4-0 scoring run, highlighted by three straight kills by Jadie DeLange for a 14-12 lead.
  • The Trojans answered back with a kill by Schroeder and Schell to tie the second set at 14-14.
  • Knotted at 17-17, DSU scored three straight points to grab a 20-17 lead after a block by Hannah Viet and Brooklyn Grage.
  • Mount Marty could get no closer than one point at 20-19 as Dakota State closed the second set with a 5-2 run.  The Trojans extended their match lead to 2-0 after a 25-21 victory.
  • The Lancers outhit the Trojans 18-14 in the second set.  MMU committed eight attack errors in 51 attempts (.196 hitting percentage), while DSU only committed three attack errors in 47 swings (.234 hitting percentage).
  • Dakota State and Mount Marty went through 11 ties in a see-saw battle in the third set.  With DSU leading 13-12, the Lancers went on a 7-1 scoring run regain a 19-14 lead.
  • DSU roared back by outscoring MMU 11-3 to secure the third set at 25-22.  Trailing 21-19, the Trojans scored five straight points to set up a match point at 24-21.
  • Riley Grandpre smashed a kill to close the match, winning 25-22 to secure the victory for Dakota State.
  • The Trojans outhit the Lancers 16-12 in the third set.
  • Schell sparked DSU's offense attack with 15 kills and hit .306.  Grage added 10 kills and hit .235. 
  • Madalyn Groft tallied seven set assists, six kills, and 18 digs for Dakota State.  Viet had five kills and two blocks.  Maddi Langerock produced a double-double of 28 set assists and 10 digs.  She had two service aces.  Schroeder recorded four kills.
  • DeLange, Alex Ruth, and Alexis Kirman each had nine kills for Mount Marty.  Julia Weber had a double-double of 18 set assists and 13 digs.  She added eight kills.
  • Langloss had 18 assists and nine digs for MMU.  Zoie Bertsch had a match-high 20 digs. 
  • Dakota State hit .203 in the match (43 kills with 17 errors in 128 attempts) compared to Mount Marty .176 hitting percentage (41 kills with 18 errors in 131 swings).
