SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) played its second men's basketball exhibition contest in a span of six days, visiting NCAA Division II Sioux Falls (S.D.) Thursday at Stewart Center. The Cougars hedl off the Trojans by the score of 75-61.
Dakota State remains at 2-2 overall record. Sioux Falls is 2-1 overall record after the victory. Both DSU and USF were former members of the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference (SDIC).
The Trojans return to regular-season action Monday evening, visiting Hastings (Neb.) at Lynn Farrell Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Hastings (Neb.).
Sioux Falls (S.D.) 75, Dakota State (S.D.) 61 – FINAL
- Dakota State and Sioux Falls went through six lead changes in the early going of the game. Each team traded leads for the first seven minutes of the game.
- Sam Muller made a layup to give DSU a 10-8 lead with less than fourteen minutes to go in the first half.
- Jake Ketiner drained a 3-pointer as USF regained their lead at 11-10 with 13:08 on the clock in the first.
- The Cougars sparked a 10-0 run, capped by three straight free throws made by Matt Cartwright to extend their lead to 18-10 with less than eight minutes to go before halftime.
- DSU answered with a quick 7-0 run after a jump shot by Deshawn Kelly, followed by a basket by Taylor Edwards, and a 3-pointer by Morales (DSU trailed 18-17 with 6:16 on the clock in the first).
- USF then went on a 9-0 run to hit a double-dight lead for the first time of the game at 27-17 with 3:33 to go after Cartwright's basket.
- Dakota State answered with a 9-2 run to trim the Cougars' lead to 29-26 as Manny N'tula drained a 3-pointer (assisted by Ethan Damerun) with 1:38 on the clock.
- Cartwright hit a 3-pointer to give USF a 34-26 lead with less than 30 seconds to go in the first half.
- Kelly closed the first half with a basket as the Trojans trailed 34-28.
- DSU was 12-of-26 from the field (46.2 percent) and 3-of-8 3-pointers in the first twenty minutes of the game. USF was 11-of-26 from the field (42.3 percent), including 5-of-12 3-pointers in the first half.
- Sioux Falls maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half before Dakota State rallied back to cut their deficit into single digit.
- Jack Thompson hit a pair of free-throws to give the Cougars a 51-36 lead with 12:27 remaining.
- Trailing 56-42, N'tula sparked the Trojans' 10-2 scoring run with a 3-pointer (assisted by Ben Hoverson. Hoverson made a pair of free-throws as DSU trimmed USF's lead to 58-52 with 8:53 to go.
- At 63-57, USF regained their double dight lead after a 6-0 run to balloon their lead to 69-57 with 4:08 remaining.
- Sioux Falls outscored Dakota State 41-33 in the final twenty minutes of the game. DSU was 11-of-26 field goals (42.3 percent) compared to USF 13-of-35 field goals (37.1 percent). The Cougars were 13-of-19 free-throws, while the Trojans were 9-of-10 free-throws in the second half.
- Kelly led the Trojans with 17 points on his 7-of-15 field goals and made all three free-throws for DSU. N'tula added 12 points on his 4-of-6 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds. Chris Morales tallied 11 points.
- Hoverson tallied eight points for Dakota State. Damerun led the team with six rebounds and dished out seven assists. N'Tula, Ronnie Latting, and Damerun each registered a blocked shot.
- Four USF players hit double-digits, led by Cartwright with 22 points. He also had eight rebounds. Thompson added 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Jake Kettner had 13 points and five rebounds.
- Zane Alm scored 11 points and collected nine rebounds for the Cougars. He had four blocked shots. Noah Peutz had five points and three steals.
- Dakota State shot 44.2 percent overall from the field (23-of-52 field goals) and held Sioux Falls to 39.3 percent (24-of-61 field goals). USF was 7-of-23 from the 3-point line (30.4 percent), while DSU was 5-of-16 3-pointers (31.3 percent).
- The Cougars hit 20-of-28 free-throws (71.4 percent) compared to the Trojans 10-of-11 free-throws (90.9 percent).
- USF outrebounded DSU 43-27. The Cougars outscored the Trojans 15-2 in second chance points.
- Dakota State outscored Sioux Falls 30-22 inside the paint.
