Defenders defeat Trojans 74-63 at Sanford Pentagon in men's basketball

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Dordt (Iowa) earned a 12-point halftime lead – thanks to their late first-half run – Tuesday evening in men's basketball contest with Dakota State (S.D.) at Sanford Pentagon.  The Defenders held off the Trojans by the score of 74-63.  Both teams were playing their third game in five days, where DSU held DU to its season-low points after averaging a bolstering 100 points per game in their pair of wins over North Star Athletic Association's foes Mayville State (N.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.).

Dakota State fell to 1-2 overall record.  Dordt stayed undefeated at 3-0 overall record.

The Trojans are off until next Tuesday (Nov. 8) as they visit their in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.).  Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m. at Cimpl Arena in Yankton, S.D.

Dordt (Iowa) 74, Dakota State (S.D.) 63 – FINAL

  • Dakota State and Dordt went through a see-saw battle in the first 13 minutes of the game, recording five ties and two lead changes.
  • Knotted at 8-8, the Trojans went on quick 5-0 scoring run to open a 13-8 lead after Kevin Jones, Jr.'s 3-pointer (assisted by Ethan Damerum) with 13:59 on the clock.
  • Jackson Louscher scored four points during DU's 5-0 scoring run to register the fourth tie of the game at 13-13 with 9:18 left in the first half.
  • Ronnie Latting hit a layup (assisted by Ben Hoverson) as the Trojans regained their lead by four points at 20-16 with 8:49 to go before halftime.
  • Dordt made three straight baskets in their 7-0 scoring run to grab a 23-20 lead, forcing the Trojans to call a timeout with 7:17 to go in the first.
  • Manny N'tula drained a 3-pointer (assisted by Damerum) as DSU tied the game at 23-23 with less than seven minutes to go in the first half.
  • Holding a slim 28-26 lead, the Defenders outscored the Trojans 14-4 in the final 4:07 of the first half to balloon their lead to 42-30.
  • Dordt shot 45.5 percent from the field (15-of-33 field goals) in the first twenty minutes of the game.  Dakota State was held to 31.3 percent from the field (10-of-32 field goals).
  • After struggling to score to start the second half, DSU opened with a 5-0 scoring run with a 3-pointer from T'tula followed by a basket by Latting to cut DU's lead to 42-35 with 16:53 remaining.
  • Dordt maintained their double dight lead for the rest of the way, leading as many as 16 points at 57-41 after a 3-poitner by Jackson Lee with 9:11 left.
  • Dakota State could get no closer than nine points after a layup by Damerum with 3:19 remaining.
  • DSU outscored DU 33-32 in the final twenty minutes of the game.  Dordt shot 41.4 percent from the field (12-of-29 field goals) compared to DSU 37.9 percent (11-of-29 field goals).
  • N'tula scored 18 points off the bench to lead the Trojans.  He drained five 3-pointers in the game.  Chris Morales and Damerum each added nine points.  Damerum grabbed seven rebounds and contributed three assists. 
  • Sam Muller pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for DSU.  He also had six points.  Hoverson scored seven points.  Morales, Mueller, and Hoverson each dished out two assists.  Deshawn Kelly had four rebounds.
  • Louscher was perfect 5-of-5 from the field and made 5-of-6 free-throws for 15 points to lead the Defenders.  Cade Bleeker and Bryce Coppock each added 13 points.  Lucas Lorenzen had eight points and nine rebounds.
  • Luke Rankin tallied six points, four assists, and three steals for Dordt. 
  • DU shot 43.5 percent overall from the field (27-of-62 field goals) and 5-of-19 from the 3-poin arc.  DSU was 34.4 percent from the field (21-of-61 field goals) and drained 11 3-pointers in 25 tries. 
  • Dordt made 15-of-20 free-throws in the game (75 percent).  Dakota State struggled from the free-throw line, making 10-of-21 free-throws (47.6 percent).
  • DU outrebounded DSU 44-40. 
  • The Defenders outscored the Trojans 36-20 inside the paint.  DSU outscored DU 36-26 in bench points.
