DWU defeats DSU 74-62 in men's basketball at DSU Fieldhouse

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) outrebounded Dakota State (S.D.) 42-31 in to pull away for a 74-62 non-conference victory Wednesday evening at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Tigers outscored the Trojans 16-6 in second chance points.

Both teams are 3-5 overall after the game.

DSU opens their North Star Athletic Association play Saturday evening, traveling to Gordon Lozier Athletic Center.  The Trojans take on their traveling partner Bellevue (Neb.) with a 5 p.m. tip-off.

Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 74, Dakota State (S.D.) 62 – FINAL

  • Dakota Wesleyan kept Dakota State scoreless in the first four minutes of the game, rolling to an 8-0 lead after a 3-ponter by Blaze Lubbers (assisted by Koln Oppold) with 17:05 on the clock.
  • The Trojans ended their scoring drought with a basket by Deshawn Kelly, trailing 8-2 with 15:59 to go in the first half.
  • DSU continued their scoring run, using an 8-2 run to cut DWU's lead to 10-8 after a layup by Sam Muller with 14:18 on the clock.
  • Ronnie Latting completed a 3-point play as Dakota State knotted the game at 13-13 with 11 minutes to go in the first half.
  • Chris Morales drained a 3-pointer (assisted by Ethan Damerum) as the Trojans earned their first lead of the game at 18-15 with 8:48 to go before halftime.
  • DWU's Oppold made a basket inside the paint as game was tied for the third time at 23-23 with 6:24 on the clock.
  • Dakota State went on a 6-0 scoring run, capped by a monstrous dunk (assisted by Damerum) to earn at 29-23 lead.  Dakota Wesleyan was forced to burn their first timeout of the game with 4:58 to go before intermission.
  • The Tigers answered after the timeout with a 7-0 scoring run, sparked by Oppard's 3-pointer.  Lubbers made a basket with 1:41 to go to regain their lead to 30-29.
  • After DSU earned a 31-30 lead after Hoverson's basket (assisted by Morales), DWU went on close the first half with a 5-0 scoring run.
  • Alan Kikwaki made a layup (assisted by Jakob Dobney) to give Dakota Wesleyan a 35-31 halftime advantage.
  • DSU shot 50 percent in the first twenty minutes of the game (14-of-28 field goals) and held DWU to 38.9 percent (14-of-3 6 field goals).  The Tigers outrebounded the Trojans 8-2 on the offensive boards (outscored DSU 8-2 in second chance points).
  • Tied at 35-35, Dobney scored five straight points to give Dakota Wesleyan a 40-35 lead with 17:21 left.
  • DSU answered back with five straight points to register the fifth tie of the game at 40-40, thanks to a pair of free-throws and 3-pointer by Manny N'tula (assisted by Morales) with 16:35 remaining.
  • Drew Van Regenmorter then scored five straight points to give the Tigers a 45-40 lead with less than 15 minutes to go.
  • Trailing 52-46, Latting hit a 3-point play followed by a 3-pointer from Kelly as Dakota State rallied back to tie the game at 52-52 with 9:59 remaining.
  • Dakota Wesleyan fueled an 11-0 outburst to earn the first double digit lead of the game at 63-52 with 6:27 remaining after Kikwaki's basket.
  • The Tigers maintained control for the rest of the game, where the Trojans could get no closer than seven points on two different occasions (63-56 with less than five minutes to go and 65-58 with 4:23 remaining).
  • DWU posted its biggest lead of the game with 1:14 left at 73-59.
  • The Tigers outscored the Trojans 39-31 in the final twenty minutes of the game.  DWU shot 57.7 percent (15-of-26 field goals) and held DSU to 37.5 percent (12-of-32 field goals).
  • Latting paced the Trojans with 14 points off the bench on his 6-of-7 field goals.  He grabbed five rebounds.  Kelly added 11 points and four rebounds.  N'tula tallied 10 points and four rebounds.
  • Damerum scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds for Dakota State.  He dished out four assists and recorded four blocked shots.  Muller tallied eight points and collected five rebounds.  Morales had six points and four assists for DSU. 
  • Oppold led the Tigers with a game-high 21 points on his 8-of-11 field goals and 4-of-5 free-throws.  He also had seven rebounds and four assists.  Lubbers posted a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds.  Kikwaki scored 13 points and recorded eight rebounds off the bench.  He contributed six assists.
  • Dobney had eight points, four rebounds, and three assists for DWU.  Kallan Herman had seven points. 
  • Dakota Wesleyan shot 46.8 percent overall from the field (29-of-62 field goals) compared to Dakota State 43.3 percent (26-of-60 field goals).  The Tigers shot 7-of-28 from the 3-point line, while the Trojans were 4-of-17 3-pointers.
  • Both teams struggled from the free-throw line.  DSU was 6-of-11 free-throws, while DWU was 9-of-16 from the free-throw line.
  • The Trojans outscored the Tigers 12-6 in points off turnovers.  Dakota Wesleyan outscored Dakota State 40-32 inside the paint and 25-19 in bench points.
