(RV) Trojans use explosive fourth quarter to rout Lancers in women's basketball

YANKTON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) used an explosive fourth quarter outburst by outscoring Mount Marty (S.D.) 26-5, rolling to a 78-49 non-conference victory Tuesday evening at Cimpl Arena.  It was the first win of the season, as well as first road victory for the Trojans.  DSU also earned its fourth straight victory in the series meeting with the Lancers.

Dakota State, receiving votes in the NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 preseason poll, improved to 1-3 overall record.  Mount Marty fell to 2-3 overall record.

DSU plays their second preseason tournament of the season with another two-game schedule this weekend.  The Trojans head to R.W. Beggs Gymnasium on Viterbo (Wis.) campus, taking on Iowa Wesleyan Friday and Indiana Northwest on Saturday.  Both games are set for 1 p.m. in La Crosse, Wis.

(RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 78, Mount Marty (S.D.) 49 – FINAL

  • Dakota State quickly kicked off the game with a 6-0 lead – with four points coming from Sidney Fick – after their 3-of-4 field goals in the first minute, and 40 seconds.  The Lancers were forced to burn their first timeout of the game with 8:18 on the clock in the first period.
  • With DSU leading 10-10, Mount Marty hit a pair of 3-pointers (from Kaity Hove and Kaela Martinez) to tie the game at 10-10 with less than three minutes to go in the first.
  • MMU closed the first quarter with a 5-0 run in the final 2:21 to regain a 15-13 lead.  Both teams struggled from the field, with MMU shooting 6-of-18 field goals (33.3 percent) and DSU shooting 5-of-17 field goals (29.4 percent).
  • Eve Millar hit a pair of free-throws to balloon Mount Marty's lead to 22-15 with 5:11 to go in the second quarter.
  • Dakota State went on a 9-0 scoring run, capped by a 3-pointer by Lilli Mackley to regain their lead at 24-22 with 3:30 to go before intermission.
  • Caitlin Dyer hit a pair of free-throws to extend the Trojans' lead to 32-25 with 2:03 on the clock in the second.  Mounty Marty used another 5-0 scoring run, cutting DSU's lead to 32-30 by halftime.
  • DSU outscored MMU 19-15 in the second quarter.  The Trojans were 6-of-15 from the field (40 percent) compared to the Lancers 5-of-13 field goals (38.5 percent).
  • Dakota State maintained their lead in the third quarter before starting to pull away.  Holding a 44-38 lead, Olivia Ritter drained a 3-pointer to widen DSU's lead to 47-38 and forced MMU to burn a timeout with 3:17 on the clock in the third period.
  • Morgan Huber ended the third quarter with a 3-pointer as Dakota State grabbed a 52-44 lead. 
  • DSU outscored MMU 20-14 in the first ten minutes of the second half, thanks to their four 3-pointers made in the third quarter. 
  • The Trojans held the Lancers to two points in the first four-plus minutes of the final quarter, roaring with a 14-1 run.  Huber capped the scoring run with a 3-pointer to give DSU a 66-45 lead with 6:18 to go.
  • Ritter added a 3-pointer with 2:17 remaining to give Dakota State its biggest lead of the game at 78-49.
  • DSU shot 9-of-18 from the field, including 6-of-10 from the 3-point arc to ignite their fourth quarter offensive explosion.  MMU was held to 2-of-17 from the field (11.8 percent).
  • Savannah Walsdorf posted a double-double of 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for Dakota State.  She dished out five assists.  Huber added 12 points and two assists off the bench.
  • Mackley tallied 11 points and five rebounds for the Trojans.  Angela Slattery had nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  Ritter and Fick each scored eight points.  Fick recorded four blocks in the game.  Courtney Menning registered four assists and three steals.
  • Kiara Berndt led the Lancers with 10 points.  Millar and Kaela Martinez each added eight points.  Millar collected eight rebounds.  Hove had six points, five rebounds, and three steals.
  • Dakota State shot 25-of-67 overall from the field (37.3 percent).  Mount Marty was held to 17-of-60 field goals (28.3 percent).  The Trojans drained 13 3-pointers in 41 tries (31.7 percent) compared to the Lancers 4-of-16 3-pointers.
  • DSU was perfect at the free-throw line, making all 15 free throw attempts.  MMU was 11-of-18 at the free-throw line (61.1 percent). 
  • The Trojans outrebounded the Lancers 39-32. 
  • Dakota State outscored Mount Marty 30-19 in bench points.
