Trojans earn first doubleheader baseball sweep of the season over NWIA

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) poured in a season-high 13 runs for a 13-0 shutout game one shutout victory, followed by a 2-1 extra inning victory over Northwestern (Iowa) in a non-conference baseball action at the Baseball Diamond.  It was the first doubleheader sweep of the season for the Trojans.

Dakota State, who recorded its first win over the Red Raiders since April 23, 2008, at Flynn Field, won their third straight game to raise their overall record to 3-1 on the season.  Northwestern fell to 2-4 overall record.

It was the first time since the 2009 season that the Trojans started the season with a 3-1 record.

Dakota State faces long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Sunday in a doubleheader held at Aspen Park.  The first game is set for 12 p.m. in Brandon, S.D.

Game 1:  Dakota State (S.D.) 13, Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 0 – FINAL

  • After a scoreless first inning, Dakota State plated three runs in the top second inning.  Mason Macaluso and Chris Burke kicked off the inning with back-to-back singles. 
  • After Josh Van Beek's sacrifice bunt to advance Macaluso to third and Burke to second, Jackson O'Neal drilled a 2-RBI double to give DSU a 2-0 lead.
  • Ryan McDaniel added an RBI single with two outs to score O'Neal, ballooning DSU's lead to 3-0.
  • With bases loaded situation and two outs in the top third inning (Jace Pribyl's double, Kameron Bryant's single and a walk by Van Beek), O'Neal was hit-by-pitch and produced an RBI to score Pribyl for 4-0 Trojans' lead.
  • Walker Hultgren followed up with an RBI walk to score Bryant to widen the Trojans' lead to 5-0 in the top third. 
  • Dakota State made it 6-0 after a wild pitch by the Red Raiders, allowing Van Beek to score in the top third frame.
  • DSU extended their lead to 7-0 after Bryant's RBI single to score Noah Angstadt who led off the fourth inning with a single. 
  • The Trojans continued its scoring surge after a four-run production in the top fifth inning.  Van Beek and O'Neal led off with back-to-back singles.  Hultgren followed up with an RBI single to score Van Beek for 8-0 DSU lead.
  • DSU widen their lead to 9-0 after McDaniel's RBI single to score Hultgren. 
  • Pribyl and Macaluso each added an RBI single to increase the Trojans' lead to 11-0 in the top fifth.
  • McDaniel hit a 2-RBI single in the top sixth inning to make it 13-0 in favor of the Trojans.
  • JD Kirchner (W, 1-1) tossed a complete game victory after shutting down Northwestern in seven innings for the Trojans.  He yielded the Red Raiders to five singles and registered six strikeouts.
  • O'Neal finished the game by going 2-of-3 at the plate with a double, single and drove in three runs for Dakota State.  McDaniel added three singles and collected four RBIs.
  • Pribyl hit a double, single and recorded an RBI for DSU.  Bryant had three singles and an RBI.  Hultgren tallied two singles and two RBIs.  Macaluso collected two hits and an RBI.
  • Bennett Osborn and Seth Altwine each swiped one base for the Trojans.
  • Sam Stanford tallied two singles for the Red Raiders.  Kip Cullinan, Eli Rash, and Mason Porepp each registered a hit.

Game 2:  Dakota State (S.D.) 2, Northwestern (Iowa) 1 – FINAL/9 innings

  • The game was scoreless after two-and-half innings in the second game of the doubleheader.
  • The Red Raiders took the first lead of the game in the bottom half of the third frame.  Stanford hit a single with two outs.  Cullinan followed up with a single to advance Stanford to third base.
  • Noa Vogel hit an RBI double to score Stanford as NWIA grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom third.
  • The Trojans snapped its scoring drought after scoring a run in the top sixth inning with two outs.  McDaniel led off with a single.  Osborn, courtesy runner for McDaniel, advanced to second base after Angstadt's ground out to second base.
  • Bryant reached safely on base caused by NWIA's defensive error in the top sixth and advanced Osborn to third base.  Macaluso followed up with an RBI single to score Osborn as the Trojans knotted the game at 1-1.
  • Both teams were unable to score in the seventh inning as the game was extended into extra innings.  The Trojans left two runners on base in the top eighth inning, while the Red Raiders left a runner in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Hultgren drilled a double with two outs in the top ninth inning.  McDaniel smashed an RBI triple to score Hultgren as the Trojans earned a 2-1 lead.
  • Cameron Pitts (S, 1) shut down the Red Raiders in the bottom ninth inning, retiring all three batters to secure the victory for Dakota State (struck out two NWIA batters).  It was his first save of the season.
  • McDaniel sparked the Trojans' offense with a triple, single and an RBI.  Hultgren added a double and a run scored.  Macaluso had a single and an RBI.
  • Angstadt and Burke each hit a single for DSU.  Angstadt recorded a stolen base.
  • Vogel led Northwestern with a double and an RBI.  Stanford and Cullinan each tallied two singles.  Eli Rash and Snyder each recorded a hit.  Ty Martens reached on base by a walk twice.
  • Grant Svikulis started the game on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He worked for six innings and limited the Red Raiders to one run on six hits.  He threw seven strikeouts.  Kahlil Tilbury (W, 1-0) recorded the victory after tossing three scoreless innings in relief.  He held NWIA to one hit.
  • Brett Shelton worked for seven innings for Northwestern.  He allowed an unearned run on three hits and registered seven strikeouts.  Ben Zeutenhorst (L, 1-1) recorded the defeat after pitching the final two innings in relief.  He gave up a run on three hits.
