TUCSON, Ariz. – Dakota State (S.D.) wrapped up the seven-game Tucson (Ariz.) Invitational Tuesday afternoon, holding off NCAA Division III California Lutheran 5-4 at Kino Sports Complex. The victory also ended DSU's nine-game losing skid.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 2-9. California Lutheran, who defeated North Star Athletic Association's fellow Viterbo (Wis.) 18-6 earlier Tuesday for their third straight win, fell to 5-15 overall record.
The Trojans are off until next Thursday as they are scheduled to kick off their 14-game home stand at Thue Complex. DSU hosts long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in a doubleheader on March 24 at 3 p.m. followed by their North Star Athletic Association season opener versus Waldorf (Iowa) on March 26-27.
Dakota State (S.D.) 5, California Lutheran 4 – FINAL
- The Regals earned the first lead of the game in the bottom first inning. Ashley Membrere reached on base by DSU's defensive error with one out. Makayla Lopez followed up with a single to advance Membrere to second base. Ariana Mendoza reached safely on base by DSU's error to set up a bases loaded situation with one out for CLU.
- Hanna Booth produced an RBI fielder's choice to score Membrere as California Lutheran earned a 1-0 lead in the bottom first frame.
- Lia Chan hit a single with one out in the top second inning for the Trojans. Alexus Foster smashed a 2-run home run with two outs as Dakota State earned a 2-1 lead. It was her first home run this season, her second career collegiate home run at DSU.
- The Trojans plated two more runs in the top third inning. Sarah Torres led off with a double. Xotchil Lopez hit an RBI single to score Torres as DSU's lead grew to 3-1 (Lopez advanced to second base on the same play).
- Rebecca Hazlett produced an RBI single to score Lopez to give Dakota State a 4-1 lead in the top third with two outs.
- Regan Laubscher led the Regals with a walk in the bottom fourth. Natalie Luna reached safely on base after an error committed by the Trojans, advancing Laubscher to second base.
- Mia Garcia hit an RBI single to score Laubscher as California Lutheran trimmed Dakota State's lead to 4-2 in the bottom fourth.
- Dakota State produced a double play defensively on the next play (Chan to Madissen Larson), halting the Regals to score. DSU held on to their 4-2 lead after four innings.
- Evdos drilled a double to kick off the top fifth for Dakota State. Hazlett hit a two-out RBI single to score Jacquelyn Folkers, pinch runner for Evdos, as the Trojans increased their lead to 5-2.
- Booth hit an RBI single in the bottom half of the fifth inning as the Regals trialed 5-3.
- California Lutheran cut Dakota State's lead to 5-4, thanks to Garcia's lead-off home run in the bottom sixth frame.
- Madison Aldendifer (S, 1) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to secure the victory for Dakota State, earning her first save of the season.
- Evdos powered the Trojans' offense attack with two doubles and a single. Torres added a double and single. Lopez recorded two hits and an RBI.
- Hazlett tallied two hits and collected two RBIs for Dakota State. Chan added two hits. Foster had a home run and two RBIs.
- Booth had a single and earned two RBIs for the Regals. Garcia added a home run, single and tallied two RBIs. Lopez, Laubscher, and Luna each added a hit.
- Dakota State outhit California Lutheran 12-6 in the game.
- Lopez (W, 1-3) recorded her first pitching victory of the season for the Trojans. She tossed six innings and gave up four runs (one unearned) on six hits.
- Madison Gunn (L, 1-5) registered a complete game setback in the pitching circle for CLU. She allowed five runs on 12 hits. She struck out seven DSU's batters.
