Trojans win season series with Tigers in home opener at Thue Field

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) made their 2022 home debut at Thue Field Thursday, hosting long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.).  The Trojans fell in a 9-8 extra inning thriller in the first game and rallied back for a 9-7 victory to earn a doubleheader split with the Tigers.  DSU earned a season series victory over the DWU (2-1 record), including an 11-2 five-inning victory at PC Dome Classic last February.

Dakota State is 3-10 overall record.  Dakota Wesleyan is 9-15 overall record.  It was the first time since April 11, 2017, that the Trojans hosted the Tigers at Thue Field.

DSU continues their 14-game home stand at Thue Field as they open their North Star Athletic Association action this weekend.  The Trojans host Waldorf (Iowa) in a four-game series, starting on Saturday with a doubleheader at 2 p.m.  Sunday's doubleheader will start at 12 p.m.

Game 1 – Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 9, Dakota State (S.D.) 8 – FINAL/8 innings

  • The Trojans earned the first lead of the game in the opening inning before the Tigers scored eight unanswered runs from second through fourth innings.  Dakota State poured in seven runs in the bottom sixth inning and fell short in eighth inning.
  • Sarah Torres reached on base by a walk with one out in the bottom first for DSU.  Xotchil Lopez hit a single with two outs and advanced Torres to second base.  Mackenzie Sims produced an RBI single to score Torres as DSU grabbed a 1-0 lead.
  • DWU answered with three runs scored in the top second.  Nora Nelson led off with a walk.  She advanced to second base after Reagan Grossi's bunt.  Jaden Warner hit an RBI single to score Nelson.  Grossi scored home on the same play caused by DSU's defensive error as the Tigers earned a 2-1 lead.
  • Dakota Wesleyan made it 3-1 as Lena McCoy hit an RBI single to score Warner in the top second frame.
  • The Tigers produced four runs in the top third inning, capped by a 2-RBI triple to widen their lead to 7-1.  Nelson also recorded a 2-RBI single earlier in the inning.
  • DSU's McKinnely Mull hit a single with two outs and advanced to second base after the Trojans committed a defensive miscue on the same play in the top fourth.  Nelson followed up with an RBI single to score Mull as the Tigers ballooned their lead to 8-1.
  • Dakota State was unable to convert their scoring chances in the bottom fifth inning with the bases full.
  • The Trojans exploded for seven runs in the bottom sixth inning as they roared back to knot the game.  Elizabeth Whitesides ignited the inning with a lead-off single, followed by Torres' RBI double to score Whitesides as DSU trailed 8-2.
  • Michelle Evdos drilled an RBI double to score Torres in the bottom sixth as Dakota State cut DWU's lead to 8-3.  Lopez followed up with a single to advance Evdos to third base.  Lopez swiped to second base.
  • Dakota State reduced their deficit to 8-5 as Sims hit a 2-RBI single to score Evdos and Lopez in the bottom sixth.  Angela Slattery hit a single to advance Sims to second base.  After Lia Chan hit a fly out, both Sims and Slattery advanced one base.
  • Madison Aldendifer reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation with one out for the Trojans in the bottom sixth.  Carrington Entringer recorded an RBI walk to score Sims as the Trojans trailed 8-6.
  • Hannah Feser, pinch hitter for Whitesides, reached safely on base by a fielder's choice and collected an RBI to score Slattery as DSU cut DWU's lead to 8-7 in the bottom sixth.
  • Torres added an RBI fielder's choice to score Aldendifer as Dakota State tied the game at 8-8 with two outs (Entringer was out at third base).  The Trojans were unable to score more runs as they left runners on third and second base when sixth inning ended.
  • Both teams could not score in the seventh inning as the game was extended into extra innings.
  • Ella Peterson led off the top eighth with a walk for Dakota Wesleyan.  She advanced to second base after a passed ball by the Trojans.  Alyssa Burke hit a single with one out and advanced Peterson to third base.
  • Peyton Bagley hit a ground out RBI to score Peterson as the DWU regained their lead to 9-8.  The inning ended when the Trojans produced a double play with Burke tagged out at third base on the same play.
  • Dakota State could not answer back in the bottom eighth frame, despite leaving a runner on third base as Dakota Wesleyan secured the victory.
  • Lopez was 4-of-5 at the plate for DSU.  Sims added two singles and drove in three runs.  Evdos had a double, single and an RBI.  Torres recorded a double, two RBIs, and two walks.  Whitesides registered two hits. 
  • Slattery and Aldendifer each had a hit and a run scored for the Trojans.  Aldendifer reached on base by a walk three times.  Lopez, Sims, and Chan each swiped one base.
  • Warner led the Tigers with a triple, single and collected three RBIs.  Nelson tallied two singles and three RBIs.  Bagley and McCoy each had a hit and an RBI.  Burke, Grossi, and Mull each had a hit.
  • Burke, Bagley, Mull each recorded a stolen base for DWU.
  • DSU outhit DWU 13-10 in the game.  The Trojans left 15 runners on base compared to the Tigers five runners left on base.
  • Lopez started the game in the pitching circle for Dakota State, working for two-plus innings.  She gave up six runs (one unearned) on four hits.  Slattery (L, 0-1) took the loss after pitching six innings, yielding three runs (one unearned) on six hits.
  • Katelyn Farris tossed the first five innings and gave up three runs on eight hits for Dakota Wesleyan.  Jacey Linke worked for one out and allowed five runs on four hits.  McKenna Thomason (W, 1-0) registered the victory after pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief and held the Trojans to one hit.

Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 9, Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) – 7 – FINAL

  • A total of 11 runs scored combined by both Dakota State and Dakota Wesleyan in a wild sixth inning.  The Trojans rallied back in the sixth inning, despite leading 4-1 after five innings and trailing 7-4 before heading in the bottom half of the sixth frame.
  • After three scoreless innings to start the second game, the Tigers grabbed the first lead of the game.  Sophie Wietzema led off with a single.  She advanced to second base after DSU's wild pitch.  Wietzema advanced to third base after Monique Gomez's sacrifice bunt.
  • Thomason hit an RBI single to score Wietzema to give DWU a 1-0 lead with two outs in the top fourth.
  • Three DSU batters (Sims' walk, Rebecca Hazleet's single, and Madissen Larson's single) reached safely on base to set up a bases loaded situation with one out in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
  • Chan smashed a grand slam as the Trojans grabbed a 4-1 lead in the bottom fourth.  It was the second time this season that Chan had hit a grand slam against DWU (hit a grand slam last February in the PC Dome Classic).
  • Peterson, Mull, and Warner each produced 2-RBI singles to highlight the Tigers' six-run production in the top sixth inning, earning a 7-4 lead.
  • Dakota State poured in five runs, all by two outs, in the bottom sixth inning as they regained their lead.  With Larson on second base, Chan hit an RBI single to score Larson as DSU trailed 7-5.
  • The Trojans continued its scoring surge as Sophia VandenBosch reached safely to third base after DWU's dropped fly ball, scoring Chan (DWU led 7-6).  VandenBosch scored home after a wild pitch committed by the Tigers, tying the game at 7-7.
  • Entringer reached on base by a walk for DSU in the bottom seventh.  Torres drilled an RBI triple to score Entringer as the Trojans earned an 8-7 lead.  Evdos followed up with an RBI single to score Torres to widen DSU's lead to 9-7.
  • Rosie Philop (S, 1) retired the final three DWU batters in the top seventh inning to secure the victory for Dakota State.  Philop notched her first save of the season.
  • Chan powered DSU's offense attack with a grand slam, single and drove in a game-high five runs.  Torres added a triple, single, and an RBI.  Hazlett tallied two singles.  Evdos had a single and an RBI.  Lopez and Larson each recorded a hit.
  • Warner, Mull, and Peterson each led the Tigers with two hits and two RBIs.  Gomez added two singles.  Bagley, Wietzema, Sierra Brown, and Thomason each had a single.
  • DWU outhit DSU 12-9 in the game.  The Tigers left eight runners on base compared to the Trojans three runners left on base.
  • Aldendifer started the game in the pitching circle, tossing 5 1/3 innings for Dakota State.  She allowed three runs on nine hits.  VandenBosch (W, 1-1) was credited the victory after working for final two outs of the top sixth inning.  Philop tossed a shutout seventh inning to secure the save.
  • Thomason pitched the first 3 1/3 innings of the game for Dakota Wesleyan, giving up four runs on five hits.  Farris pitched 1 2/3 shutout innings in relief.  Linke (L, 0-2) took the setback after pitching for one inning, allowing five runs (four unearned) on four hits.
