Trojans split NSAA softball conference opener with Warriors

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) and Waldorf (Iowa) kicked off the 2022 North Star Athletic Association softball schedule Saturday in a chilly Thue Field Saturday afternoon.  The Trojans cruised to a 12-1 conference opener in five innings, while the Warriors earned the doubleheader split with a 16-7 six-inning victory in the second game.

Dakota State is 4-11 overall record.  Waldorf earned its first win of the season in the second game, ending their 13-game losing skid (1-13 overall record).  Both teams are 1-1 record in the league.

It was the first time in the all-time series with the Warriors played at the Thue Complex.  The Trojans won its conference season opener game for the first time since 2017.  In addition, DSU won its NSAA conference season opener game at Thue Field for the first time since 2014.

DSU and WU wrap up their NSAA four-game series Sunday with another doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 12, Waldorf (Iowa) 1 – FINAL/5 innings

  • Dakota State poured in 12 runs in the first three innings to roll past Waldorf (Iowa) 12-1 in five innings in the first game of the doubleheader.
  • Elizabeth Whitesides led off with a walk for the Trojans in the bottom first.  She swiped to second base.  Sarah Torres added a single to advance Whitesides to third base.  Torres recorded a stolen base to second bae.
  • Mackenzie Sims produced an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Whitesides to give DSU the first lead at 1-0 with two outs in the bottom first.  Hannah Feser followed up with an RBI single to score Torres to extend the Trojans lead to 2-0.
  • DSU exploded for five runs in the bottom second inning.  Angela Slattery started with the walk.  Whitesides reached safely on base after WU's defensive error and advanced Slattery to second base.  Torres hit a single to set up a bases loaded situation with no outs.
  • Michelle Evdos produced an RBI single to score Slattery for DSU's 3-0 lead in the bottom second.  Sims followed up with 2-RBI single to score Torres and Whitesides to balloon their lead to 5-0.
  • Sims swiped to second base with two outs in the bottom second for Dakota State.  Rosie Philop hit a 2-RBI single to score Evdos and Sims to increase their lead to 7-0.
  • Dakota State's offense erupted for five more runs in the bottom fifth inning, thanks to a pair of triples.  Rebecca Hazlett drilled a double to lead off the inning.  Jacquelyn Folkers blasted an RBI triple to score Hazlett to make it 8-0 in favor of the Trojans.
  • DSU made it 9-0 after Torres hit an RBI single to score Folkers in the bottom third.
  • Evdos hit a single to advance Sophia VandenBosch (pinch runner for Torres) to second baes for DSU in the bottom third.  Sims hit 2-RBI triple to score VandenBosch and Alexus Foster, who ran for Evdos, as DSU's lead grew to 11-0.
  • Philop collected an RBI ground out to score Sims to make it 12-0 Dakota State in the bottom third frame.
  • Brooke Hickey, Kaela Eslinger, and Jayla Weston led off the top fourth inning with a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for WU. 
  • DSU prevented Waldorf from scoring as Emily Muro hit a fielder's choice while Hickey was forced out at home in the top fourth.  Kaylee Weber produced an RBI ground out to score Eslinger as the Warriors scored its first run of the game (DSU led 12-1).
  • The Warriors left a runner on base when the game ended, securing the second straight victory for the Trojans.
  • Sims ignited the Trojans' offense attack with a triple, single and drove in a game-high five runs.  Torres was perfect 3-of-3 at the plate with three singles and an RBI.  Philop added two singles and collected three RBIs.
  • Folkers registered a triple and an RBI for Dakota State.  Evdos had two singles and an RBI.  Feser had a hit and an RBI.  Lia Chan, Slattery, and Hazlett each had a hit.
  • Muro had a double for the Warriors.  Paige Pierson added a hit.  Kyleigh Morris, Hickey, Eslinger, Weston, and Kassidy Elyea each recorded a walk.
  • Dakota State outhit Waldorf 14-2 in the game.
  • Slattery (W, 1-1) earned her first collegiate victory in the pitching circle for DSU.  She tossed three scoreless innings and limited the Warriors to one hit.  Alexa Graves tossed the fourth inning, while Philop closed the game in the fifth inning.
  • McKenna Mentink (L, 0-7) took the loss after pitching two innings.  She gave up 10 runs (one unearned) on 11 hits.  Pierson worked for two innings in relief, giving up two runs on three hits.

Game 2 – Waldorf (Iowa) 16, Dakota State (S.D.) 7 – FINAL/6 innings  

  • Waldorf used the fast start in the second game of the four-game series, jumping to a 6-2 lead after two innings and never trailed.
  • Muro kicked off the game with a single for WU.  Pierson reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive error and advanced Muro to second base. 
  • Hickey drilled an RBI double to score Muro to give Waldorf a 1-0 lead in the top first frame (Pierson advanced to third base).  The Warriors made it 2-0 as Eslinger hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Pierson (Hickey advanced to third base).
  • Bree Hamblin reached safely on base caused by DSU's error with two outs, allowing Hickey to score for 3-0 WU lead.
  • Carrington Entringer smashed a lead-off triple to start the bottom half of the first inning for DSU.  Fester hit an RBI single to score Entringer as the Trojans trailed 3-1.
  • With Feser on third base, Madison Aldendifer recorded a walk.  On the same play, Feser scored home after a wild pitch by the Warriors as DSU cut WU's lead to 3-2 in the bottom first.
  • Waldorf added three more runs in the top second inning, thanks to Pierson's RBI double, Weston's RBI single and Elyea's RBI single to balloon their lead to 6-2.
  • Dakota State scored once the bottom third.  Hazlett led off with a single and advanced to second base after WU's defensive error on the same play.  She swiped to third base.  Evdos hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Hazlett as the Trojans cut Warriors' lead to 6-3.
  • The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring chances as they left bases loaded when the third inning ended.
  • The Warriors poured in five runs in the top fourth inning to balloon their lead to 11-3 in the top fourth.
  • Waldorf plated three runs with two outs in the top fifth inning, capped by Muro's 2-RBI single to make it 14-3.
  • Dakota State extended the game into the sixth inning after scoring four runs in the bottom fifth.  Aldendifer led off with a walk.  Sims followed up with a single to advance Aldendifer to second base.  Madissen Larson reached safely on base after WU committed a defensive error.
  • Folkers and Chan each produced 2-RBI singles as the Trojans trailed 14-7 in the bottom fifth, scoring Sims, Aldendifer, Folkers, and Larson.
  • Hamlin hit an RBI single, while Elyea added an RBI single as Waldorf's lead grew to 16-7 in the top sixth frame.
  • The Trojans were unable to score in the bottom sixth as the Warriors secured its first win of the season.
  • Entringer had a triple, single and a run scored for Dakota State.  Chan and Folkers each had a single and collected 2 RBIs.  Feser tallied a hit and an RBI.  Hazlett, Aldendifer, Philop, Larson, and Olivia Peterson each had a hit.
  • Entringer, Feser, and Hazlett each swiped one base for DSU.
  • Muro, Pierson, and Elyea each had two hits and tallied two RBIs.  Hickey and Weston each added a hit and an RBI.  Sydney Boyd registered two singles.  Weston collected two RBIs. 
  • Waldorf reached on base by a walk 12 times in the game, while Dakota State had one walk.
  • Both teams recorded 12 hits in the game.  The Warriors committed four defensive errors compared to the Trojans three defensive errors.
  • Aldendifer (L, 1-4) took the setback after tossing 2 2/3 innings.  She gave up eight runs (two unearned) on eight hits.  Philop worked for 2 1/3 innings in relief, allowing five runs (four unearned) on two hits.  VandenBosch worked for 2/3 innings.  Slattery pitched the final out of the top sixth inning.
  • Alex Mathers started the game for the first two outs in the pitching circle for Waldorf.  She allowed two runs on four hits.  Pierson (W, 1-0) recorded the victory after tossing 5 1/3 innings in relief.  She gave up five runs (two unearned) on eight hits.
