Dakota State (S.D.) splits another NSAA softball doubleheader with Waldorf (Iowa)

MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) and Waldorf (Iowa) met in another chilly North Star Athletic Association softball doubleheader Sunday at Thue Field.  The Trojans shook off their slow start in the first game, scoring eight unanswered runs after trailing 4-0 and held on to an 8-5 victory.  The Warriors held off Trojans 5-4 in the four-game series finale, earning the NSAA four-game series with a split (2-2 record in the league).

Dakota State is 5-12 overall record, while Waldorf is 2-14 overall record.

There is a schedule change to DSU's next softball games.  The Trojans are originally scheduled to host Mount Marty (S.D.) on Tuesday, but will be relocated to Yankton, S.D. with the non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.  The games are being held at Riverside Park.

Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 8, Waldorf (Iowa) 5 – FINAL

  • Waldorf took the first lead of the game in the top first inning.  Emily Muro reached by base by a walk.  She swiped to second base after Paige Pearson's strikeout.  Muro advanced to third base by DSU's passed ball.
  • Another passed ball by the Trojans allowed Muro to score to give WU a 1-0 lead with two outs in the top first frame.
  • The Warriors plated three runs in the top third frame.  Sydney Boyd was hit-by-pitch to start the inning.  Muro added a walk and advance Boyd to second base.  Both Boyd and Muro advanced one base after a passed ball by the Trojans.
  • Pierson drilled a 2-RBI double to score Boyd and Muro to extend the Warriors' lead to 3-0 with one out in the top third.  Pierson advanced to third base after DSU committed a passed ball.
  • Brooke Hickey produced an RBI ground out to score Pierson as WU's lead grew to 4-0 in the top third.
  • Dakota State ended its scoring drought with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third inning.  Rosie Philop led off with a double.  Lia Chan reached safely on base caused by WU's defensive error, allowing Philop to score (DSU trailed 4-1).  Chan advanced to third base on the same play.
  • The Trojans trimmed their deficit to 4-2 after Elizabeth Whitesides produced an RBI ground out to score Chan in the bottom third.
  • DSU added two more runs in the bottom fourth inning.  Angela Slattery smashed a triple with one out.  Mackenzie Sims followed up with a walk.  Sims swiped to second base, while on the same play, the Warriors committed a defensive error to allow Slattery to score as the Trojans trailed 4-3.
  • Dakota State knotted the game at 4-4 as Chan reached safely on base caused by WU's defensive error with two outs, allowing Sims to score in the bottom fourth.
  • The Warriors left the bases full in the top fifth inning and did not score, despite getting walks by Boyd, Muro, and Pierson.
  • The Trojans poured in four runs in the bottom fifth frame to overtake the lead.  Sarah Torres led off with a single.  Carrington Entringer followed up with a sacrifice bunt to advance Torres to second base.  Michelle Evdos hit an RBI single to right field and scored Torres for DSU 5-4 lead.
  • Alexus Foster, who ran for Evdos, swiped to second base in the bottom fifth for DSU.  Xotchil Lopez drilled a double to advance Foster to third base.  DSU extended their lead to 6-4 as Slattery hit an RBI single to score Foster (Lopez advanced to second base).
  • The Trojans added two more runs from Lopez caused by WU's defensive error, while Emily McGaugh (pinch runner for Slaterry) stole home to extend DSU's lead to 8-4 (Sims swiped to second base and advanced to third base after a defensive miscue by the Warriors on the same play).
  • Boyd led off the top seventh inning with a walk for Waldorf.  Kyleigh Morris hit a fielder's choice, while Boyd was out at second base.  Muro followed up with a walk, while Pierson hit a single to set up a bases loaded situation.
  • Hickey hit an RBI single to score Morris as the Warriors trialed 8-5 with one out in the top seventh for WU.  Eslinger reached on base by a fielder's choice, while Pierson was forced out at home.  On the same play, Muro attempted to score at home where DSU secured the game by tagging her out at home.
  • Slattery led the Trojans with a triple, single and an RBI.  Philop and Lopez each added a double and a run scored.  Torres tallied two singles.  Evdos had a hit and an RBI.  Sims and Whitesides each collected an RBI.
  • McGaugh swiped two bases for DSU.  Slattery, Sims, and Whitesides each added a stolen base.
  • Pierson paced the Warriors with a double, single and drove in two runs.  Hickey added a single and two RBIs.  Muro reached on base by a walk four times and scored twice. 
  • Muro and Soyd each recorded a stolen base for WU.
  • The Trojans tallied seven hits in the game compared to the Warriors three hits.  WU committed six defensive errors while DSU did not commit a defensive error.
  • Slattery (W, 2-1) earned her second straight pitching victory in the four-game series for Dakota State.  She tossed five innings and allowed four runs (one unearned) on one hit.  She recorded four strikeouts.  Philop worked for two innings in relief, yielding one run on two hits.
  • McKenna Mentink (L, 0-8) recorded a complete game setback in the pitching circle for Waldorf.  She gave up eight runs (five unearned) on seven hits.

Game 2 – Waldorf (Iowa) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL

  • Waldorf raced to a 5-0 lead after two innings in the four-game series finale.  The Warriors held off the Trojans' late comeback for a 5-4 victory, despite being limited with two hits in the game.  WU took advantage with 11 walks in the game.
  • Muro kicked off the game with a walk, followed by a double by Pierson, and a walk by Hickey to set up a based loaded situation for WU.
  • Eslinger produced an RBI walk to score Muro to give Waldorf 1-0 lead in the top first frame.
  • The Trojans prevented the Warriors to score more runs as the next two WU batters hit fielder's choices with the runners being forced out at home each time.  WU left the bases full when the top first inning ended.
  • The Warriors opened the second inning with three straight walks by Kaylee Weber, Janessa Weston, and Muro.  Pierson hit a fielder's choice as Weber was forced out at home.
  • Hickey reached safely on base after DSU's defensive miscue, allowing Weston, Muro, and Pierson to score as the Warriors widen their lead to 4-0 in the top second frame.
  • Waldorf made it 5-0 as Eslinger hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Hickey in the top second.
  • The Trojans scored once in the bottom fourth inning to snap their scoring drought.  Sims led off with a single.  Chan reached safely on base after WU's error to advance Jacquelyn Folkers, pinch runner for Sims, to second base.  Torres recorded an RBI single to score Folkers as DSU trailed 5-1.  The inning ended as Chan was tagged out at home.
  • Philop led off the bottom fifth with a single for DSU.  Entringer added a single to advance McGaugh (pinch runner for Philop) to second base. 
  • Sims reached safely on base by Warriors' defensive miscue, allowing McGaugh to score as the Trojans cut WU's lead to 5-2 in the bottom fifth.
  • Dakota State plated two runs in the bottom sixth frame to cut the Warriors' lead down by one run.  Chan led off with a single but was out at second base after Whitesides fielder's choice (Whitesides advanced to second base on the same play).
  • Torres hit an RBI single to score Whitesides as the Trojans trailed 5-3 with one out in the bottom sixth.  Torres advanced to second base after Philop's ground out.  Evdos hit an RBI single to score Torres as the Trojans trimmed Waldorf's lead to 5-4.
  • Dakota State was unable to score in the bottom seventh inning as the Warriors secured the victory.
  • Torres was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and drove in two runs for DSU.  Evdos added two hits and an RBI.  Philop, Entringer, Sims, and Chan each hit a single.
  • Pierson had a double and a run scored for WU.  Muro added a single, two walks, and scored twice.  Bree Hamblin and Weber each reached on base by a walk twice.
  • Eslinger collected two RBIs for Waldorf. 
  • DSU out WU 8-2 in the game. 
  • Xotchil Lopez (L, 1-3) took the defeat after tossing two innings for Dakota State.  She allowed five runs (three unearned) on two hits.  Sophia VandenBosch tossed five shutout innings in relief.  She had three strikeouts.
  • Pierson (W, 2-0) tossed a complete game victory for Waldorf.  She gave up four runs (two unearned) on eight hits.
