YANKTON, S.D. – The non-conference softball doubleheader between Dakota State (S.D.) and Mount Marty (S.D.) was originally scheduled to be play at Thue Field Tuesday and was relocated to Riverside Park in Yankton. The Trojans fell short to the Lancers in the first game by the score of 7-6. MMU completed the doubleheader sweep of DSU after winning the second game 11-2 in five innings.
Dakota State is 5-14 overall record on the season. Mount Marty lifted their overall record to 16-8.
DSU returns home Saturday and Sunday for the North Star Athletic Association four-game series with Mayville State (N.D.). Both teams play a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday and another doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m. The four-game series will be played at Thue Field.
Game 1 – Mount Marty (S.D.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 6 – FINAL
- Bailey Kortan and Abigail Page kicked off the bottom first with back-to-back singles. Emma Burns was hit-by-pitch to set up a bases loaded situation for Mount Marty. Karlee Arnold produced an RBI walk to score Kortan as MMU earned a 1-0 lead.
- The Lancers made it 2-0 as Madison Van Wyhe recorded another RBI walk tot score Page with one out in the bottom first.
- DSU answered with a run in the top second frame. Angela Slattery led off with a walk. Lia Chan drilled a double to advance Slattery to third base. Carrington Entringer recorded an RBI single to score Slattery as the Trojans trailed 2-1.
- With runners on second and first bases in the bottom second frame, Burns hit an RBI single with two out as the Lancers extended their lead to 3-1.
- Dakota State poured in four runs in the top third inning to earn their first lead of the game. Sarah Torres led off with a single. She swiped to second base. Mackenzie Sims was hit-by-pitch.
- Slattery blasted her first career collegiate home run as she hit a 3-run home run to give DSU a 4-3 lead in the top third fame.
- Chan followed up with a single for the Trojans. She scored home after Madison Aldendifer's RBI single to make it 5-3 in favor of Dakota State.
- Abigail Thomas was hit-by-pitch to start the bottom fourth for MMU. Kortan drilled an RBI triple to score Thomas as the Lancers cut DSU's lead to 5-4.
- Mount Marty knotted the game at 5-5 in the bottom fourth with two outs when Kelly Amezcua hit an RBI single to score Kortan.
- Chan smashed a solo home run in the top fifth inning as the Trojans regained their lead to 6-5 with two outs. It was her third home run this season.
- Janeah Castro answered with a solo home run in the bottom half of the fifth inning as MMU tied the game at 6-6.
- With runner on third base (Thomas advanced on fielder's choice and swiped to second base then advanced to third after a passed ball by DSU), Burns hit an RBI single to score Thomas as the Lancers earned a 7-6 lead in the bottom fifth.
- Dakota State was unable to convert the scoring chance to tie the game in the top seventh, despite a single by Michelle Evdos and advanced to third base on the same play after MMU's defensive miscue.
- DSU outhit MMU 11-9 in the game.
- Chan was perfect at the plate by going 3-of-3 with a home run, double, single and an RBI for Dakota State. Slattery added a home run, single and collected three RBIs.
- Entringer tallied two singles and an RBI for the Trojans. Aldendifer recorded a single and an RBI. Torres, Evdos, and Sims each had a hit.
- Kortan led the Lancers with a triple, single and an RBI. Burns collected two singles and two RBIs. Amezcua, Van Wyhe, and Castro each had a hit and an RBI.
- Page recorded a single and reached on base by a walk twice for Mount Marty. Thomas had a single and scored three times.
- Slattery (L, 2-2) took the complete game setback in the pitching circle for DSU. She allowed seven runs (one unearned) on nine hits. She struck out a season-high eight batters in the game.
- McKenzie Gray started the game in the pitching circle for MMU. She worked for three innings and gave up five runs on seven hits. Kaylee Rogers (W, 7-2) earned the victory after tossing four innings in relief, yielding the Trojans to one run on four hits. She registered four strikeouts.
Game 2 – Mount Marty (S.D.) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/5 innings
- Mount Marty scored at least a run in all five innings to complete the doubleheader sweep of Dakota State.
- The Lancers, as a visiting team in the second game, exploded for five runs in the top first inning. Castro capped the inning with a 2-run home run to give MMU a 5-0 lead.
- DSU scored once in the bottom half of the first inning. Torres led off with a single, followed by Evdos' double to advance Torres to third base.
- Rosie Philop hit an RBI single to score Torres as DSU trailed 5-1 in the bottom first frame.
- Mount Marty made it 6-1 in the top second inning with a solo home run by Burns.
- Kortan blasted a 3-RBI triple in the top third fame to balloon MMU's lead to 9-1.
- Burns led off the top fourth inning with a double and advanced to third base after DSU's passed ball. Amezcua hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Burns as the Lancers led 10-1.
- Madissen Larson led off the bottom fourth with a single for the Trojans. Chan hit a ground out to advance Larson to second base. Entringer hit an RBI single to score Larson as DSU trailed 10-2.
- Mount Marty extended their lead to 11-2 in the top fifth inning with Kortan's RBI double.
- DSU left two runners on base when the game ended in the bottom fifth, securing the victory for MMU.
- Torres was 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and a run scored for Dakota State. Philop added two singles and an RBI. Evdos had a double. Entringer collected a single and an RBI. Sims recorded a hit.
- Torres, Philop, Rebecca Hazlett, and Entringer each swiped one base.
- Kortan was 3-of-4 at the plate with two doubles, triple and drove in four RBIs for Mount Marty. Burns added a home run, double and an RBI. Castro hit a home run and tallied two RBIs.
- Dakota State outhit Mount Marty 8-7 in the game, despite the defeat. The Trojans left seven runners on base compared to the Lancers' four runners left on base.
- Sophie VandenBosch (L, 1-2) took the loss after working for 2 1/3 innings in the pitching circle for DSU. Philop tossed 2 2/3 innings in relief after yielding the Lancers to two runs on four hits.
- Madison Biller (W, 1-0) collected a complete game victory for MMU. She allowed two runs on eight hits.
