MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) returned home for another North Star Athletic Association softball four-game series Saturday at Thue Field, hosting Mayville State (N.D.) for the first time since May 1, 2015 (NSAA postseason tournament). The Trojans held off the Comets in the doubleheader by the scores of 3-2 and 4-2, earning its first doubleheader sweep over MSU since March 24, 2018.
Dakota State, who is currently playing their first NSAA conference contests at Thue Field, improved their overall record to 7-14 and 4-2 NSAA conference record. Mayville State fell to 4-17 overall record and 1-5 record in the league.
Both teams warp up their four-game series with another doubleheader Sunday at Thue Field, starting at 12 noon.
Game 1 – Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Mayville State (N.D.) 2 – FINAL
- Dakota State and Mayville State were unable to score in the first two innings.
- The Comets struck first in the top third frame with two outs, plating two runs. Brooke Roeges hit a single. Mackenzie Duval drilled an RBI triple to score Roeges to give MSU a 1-0 lead.
- On the same play, Duval scored home caused by DSU's defensive error to extend Mayville State's lead to 2-0.
- The Trojans answered with two runs in the bottom half of the third inning. Madison Aldendifer was hit-by-pitch to start and advanced to second base after Lia Chan's sacrifice bunt.
- Elizabeth Whitesides hit a single to advance Aldendifer to third base in the bottom third for DSU. Aldendifer scored home on the same play after MSU committed a defensive error and allowed Whitesides advance to second base (DSU trialed 2-1).
- Sarah Torres followed up with an RBI double to score Whitesides as the Trojans knotted the game at 2-2 in the bottom third with one out.
- Dakota State scored once in the bottom sixth inning to earn their first lead of the game. Angela Slattery hit a single with one out. She advanced to second base after a passed ball by the Comets.
- Rosie Philop reached safely on base caused by MSU's defensive error, allowing Slattery to score home as Dakota State grabbed a 3-2 lead.
- Madison Aldendifer shut down Mayville State in the final inning, retiring the final three batters of the game to secure the victory for Dakota State.
- Slattery led the Trojans by going 2-of-3 at the plate with a run scored. Torres added a double and an RBI. Whitesides collected a single and recorded two stolen bases. Olivia Peterson swiped one base.
- Duval tallied a double and an RBI for the Comets. Roeges added a single and a run scored. Hughes had a double. Nicole Fierro registered a single and a walk.
- Both teams had four hits and five runners left on base in the game. The Comets committed three defensive errors compared to the Trojans one defensive miscue.
- Slattery started the game in the pitching circle for DSU, working the first four innings. She yielded MSU to two runs (one unearned) on four hits. Aldendifer (W, 2-4) earned the victory after tossing three shutout innings in relief. She did not allow a hit and issued just one walk.
- Payton Doerksen (L, 0-7) pitched a complete game, despite the setback for Mayville State. She gave up three runs (one unearned) on four hits in six innings of work.
Game 2 – Dakota State (S.D.) 4, Mayville State (N.D.) 2 – FINAL
- Dakota State used a three-run production in the bottom third to break a 1-1 tie and held on to the victory to complete the doubleheader sweep.
- With runner on first base with two outs in the top first inning, Jocelyn Ontiveros hit a single to left field and advanced Duval to third base. Duval scored home on the same play caused by DSU's defensive error for MSU 1-0 lead.
- The Trojans answered with a run in the bottom first inning. Torres and Mackenzie Sims led off with back-to-back singles. Michelle Evdos reached safely on base by a fielder's choice to advance Torres to third base, while Sims was forced out on second base.
- Carrington Entringer produced an RBI fly out to score Torres as DSU tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom first.
- Evdos hit a single with one out in the bottom third inning for Dakota State. Entringer reached safely on base after a sacrifice bunt, where the Comets committed two defensive miscues on the same play to allow Evdos advance to third and Entringer to second base.
- Slattery hit an RBI single to score Evdos as the Trojans earned a 2-1 lead with one out in the bottom third.
- Chan drilled a 2-RBI triple to score Entringer and Slattery to balloon DSU's lead to 4-1 with two outs in the bottom third.
- The Trojans halted the Comets to score they left the bases full in the top fourth inning (DSU led 4-1).
- Hughes led the top fifth inning with a single for Mayville State. She swiped to second base with one out and advanced to third base after DSU committed a wild pitch.
- Duval produced an RBI single to score Hughes with two outs as MSU trimmed DSU's lead to 4-2 in the top fifth frame.
- The Comets could not score in the final inning, despite a lead-off double by Hughes.
- Torres paced the Trojans' offense attack by going 2-of-3 at the plate. Chan had a triple and collected two RBIs. Slattery added a single and an RBI. Entringer registered an RBI. Sims and Evdos each had a hit.
- Evdos and Jacquelyn Folkers each had a stolen base for DSU.
- Hughes led the Comets with a double, single, and a run scored. She swiped one base. Ontiveros added two singles. Duval recorded a single and an RBI.
- DSU outhit MSU 6-5 in the game. Both committed two defensive errors. The Comets left seven runners on base compared to the Trojans five runners left on base.
- Slattery (W, 3-2) earned the victory after tossing four innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She allowed one unearned run on one hit. Philop (S, 2) earned the save after working for three innings in relief. She gave up one run on four hits and recorded three strikeouts.
- Annika Seedborg started the game for Mayville State. She worked the first inning and gave up one run on two hits. Courtney Boll (L, 3-4) took the defeat after tossing five innings in relief. She allowed three unearned runs on four hits. She struck out eight DSU's batters.
