MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) powered to another 3-0 sweep over Briar Cliff (Iowa) in the non-conference volleyball match Monday evening at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans outhit the Chargers 49-27 to cruise to 25-20, 25-21, and 25-11 for their fourth straight victory.
Dakota State, receiving votes in the latest NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, concluded their season-long five-match home stand with a 4-1 record. The Trojans earned its fifth win in the last six matches, lifting their overall record to 11-8. Briar Cliff, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, fell to 5-10 overall record.
The Trojans won the last four meetings with the Chargers. BCU won the junior varsity match by the set scores of 21-25, 25-15, and 26-24.
Dakota State continues their busy schedule with another non-conference match Tuesday evening, kicking off their six-match road stretch. The Trojans face No. 18 ranked Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.). The junior varsity match is set for 5 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7 p.m. Both matches will be held at Christen Athletic Wellness on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, S.D.
(RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 3, Briar Cliff (Iowa) 0 – FINAL (25-20, 25-21, 25-11)
- Tied at 4-4 in the opening set, Sydney Schell smashed three consecutive kills to ignite Dakota State's 5-0 scoring run. The Chargers were forced to timeout after DSU stretched their lead to 9-4.
- Dakota State never trailed for the rest of the first set, earning a 1-0 match lead after a 25-20 victory.
Schell smashed 11 kills in the first set for the Trojan. DSU outhit BCU 18-10 in the opening set.- Holding a slim 3-2 lead in the second set, the Trojans went on a 4-0 scoring run capped by Schell's kill for 7-2 lead and forced BCU to use their first timeout.
- The Trojans never trailed for the remainder of the second set, where the Chargers could get no closer than two points at 19-17 after Alexis Johnson's kill.
- Madalyn Groft smashed a kill to close the second set at 25-21, extending the match lead to 2-0 for Dakota State.
- The Trojans outhit the Chargers 16-10 in the second set.
- Knotted at 3-3, DSU went on a monstrous 7-0 scoring run to balloon their lead to 10-3 in the third set. After BCU's timeout at 7-3, Peyton Groft recorded a service ace followed by a kill then Riley Grandpre and Schell each recorded a kill to make it seven-point lead for DSU.
Hannah Viet smashed a kill to give Dakota State its biggest lead in the third set at 20-9.- The Trojans hit .343 in the third set (15 kills with 3 errors in 35 swings), cruising to a 25-11 victory over the Chargers to secure the match victory. BCU was held to .000 hitting percentage in the third set (7 kills with 7 errors in 39 attempts).
- Schell, who earned the NSAA Attacker-of-the-Week earlier Monday, produced a double-double of 20 kills and 13 digs for Dakota State. She had three blocks. Madalyn Groft, also was named to NSAA Setter-of-the-Week earlier Monday, nearly posted a triple-double. She tallied 19 set assists, 11 digs, and smashed nine kills. She also had two blocks.
- Viet, who completed the sweep of the NSAA weekly award as the Defender-of-the-Week, finished with seven kills and two blocks for DSU. Vanessa Schroeder had five kills and four blocks.
- Maddi Langerock registered a double-double of 18 set assists and 10 digs for Dakota State. P. Groft had 13 digs and a service ace. VonnaGail Schlechter had a match-high 17 digs and a service ace.
Chloe Johnson led the Chargers' offense attack with 10 kills and hit .304. She had a double-double with 16 digs. Sami Wasmund had six kills and three blocks. Toria Andre recorded four kills and four blocks. Johnson had five kills and two blocks.- Emma Porter contributed 16 set assists for BCU. She had seven digs. Tannah Heath collected 14 digs. Kanoelani Shadron had seven assists and a service ace.
- Dakota State hit .230 in the match (49 kills with 18 errors in 135 swings) and held Briar Cliff to .083 hitting percentage (27 kills with 17 errors in 120 attempts).
- The Chargers were 98.1 percent at the serving line with an ace and a service error in 53 attempts. The Trojans registered a 95.9 service percentage with two aces and three errors in 74 serves.
- DSU collected 71 digs compared to BCU 62 digs.
- Briar Cliff had seven blocks compared to Dakota State six blocks.
