(18) Tigers halt (RV) Trojans' four-match winning streak in five-set thriller

MITCHELL, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) kicked off their six-match road stretch Tuesday evening, facing another opponent from the Great Plains Athletic Conference on back-to-back nights.  The Trojans dropped a hard-fought battle with rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in a five-set thriller at Christen Athletic Wellness Center (20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 17-25, and 15-11).

Dakota State, receiving votes in the NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, saw their four-match winning streak came to an end.  The Trojans dropped their overall record to 11-9.  Dakota Wesleyan, No. 18 in the national poll, lifted their overall record to 12-3.

Both teams will meet for the second meeting of the season on Oct. 12 at DSU Fieldhouse.

Dakota State remains on the road Friday as they resume their North Star Athletic Association action.  The Trojans visit Valley City State (N.D.) with a 6 p.m. first serve at Graichen Gymnasium in Valley City, N.D.

(18) Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 3, (RV) Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL (20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 17-25, 15-11)

  • Dakota State kicked off the first set by racking to a 7-3 lead, capped by back-to-back kills from Hannah Viet and Sydney Schell and forced Dakota Wesleyan to burn their first timeout.
  • After DWU's Emily Dale smashed back-to-back kills to cut DSU's lead to 7-5, the Trojans went on a 5-1 scoring tear to balloon their lead to 12-6 after Madalyn Groft's kill.  The Tigers burned their final timeout of the first set.
  • The Tigers went on an 8-3 run to trim Trojans' lead to 15-14 after Dale's kill in the first set.  The Trojans answered by outscoring DWU 5-1 to make it 20-15.  Peyton Groft recorded a service ace, while Schell and M. Groft each had a kill during DSU's scoring run.
  • DWU scored the next five points to knot the first set at 20-20, highlighted by three kills from Mackenzie Miller.
  • Vanessa Schroeder sparked DSU's 5-0 closing run to earn a 1-0 match lead.  The Trojans took advantage of three straight DWU attack errors, while Brooklyn Grage closed the first set with a kill for a 25-20 victory.
  • DWU outhit DSU 19-14 in the opening set.  The Trojans took advantage of Tigers' 10 attack errors.  DSU hit .232 (1 error in 56 attempts) while DWU hit .136 (66 swings).
  • Dakota State and Dakota Wesleyan battled back and forth in the second set, featuring a total of 10 ties.
  • Viet and Grage recorded a block as Dakota State recorded the 10th tie of the second set at 21-21, forcing Dakota Wesleyan to call a timeout.
  • DWU scored the next two points to grab a 23-21 lead, while DSU called a timeout.  A kill by M. Groft trimmed DWU's lead to 23-22, followed by Ady Dwight's kill to set up a set point opportunity for the Trojans.
  • Viet smashed a kill to save a set point chance as DSU trailed 24-23 in the second set.  Dwight closed the second set with a kill as DWU evened the match at 1-1 after a 25-23 victory.
  • Both teams smashed 17 kills in the second set, however, DSU committed seven attack errors in 51 swings (.196 hitting percentage) compared to DWU 5 attack errors in 54 attempts (.222 hitting efficiency).
  • Riley Grandpre smashed a kill to give DSU a 3-2 lead in the third set before DWU scored six straight points to overtake an 8-3 lead.
  • Dakota State rallied back to tie the third set at 13-13 after Grandpre's kill in the third set.
  • DWU answered with a 5-1 scoring run to widen their lead to 18-14.  The Trojans could get no closer than 18-15 after Viet's kill as DWU closed the third set with a 7-2 run.  The Tigers grabbed a 2-1 match lead after winning the third set at 25-19.
  • DSU and DWU each registered 13 kills in the third set.  The Trojans were held to .122 hitting percentage (7 errors in 49 attempts) compared to the Tigers .205 hitting percentage (4 errors in 44 swings).
  • Dakota State took advantage of four straight errors by Dakota Wesleyan, racing to a 4- 0 lead in the fourth set.
  • The Trojans never trailed in the fourth set, leading as many as nine points at 21-12 after Schroeder's kill.  She closed the fourth set with a kill as DSU forced the fifth and deciding set after winning 25-17 to tie the match at 2-2.
  • DSU hit an impressive .293 in the fourth set (13 kills with 1 error in 41 swings).  DWU was held to .118 hitting efficiency (15 kills with 9 errors in 51 attempts).
  • Dakota State and Dakota Wesleyan went through five ties and a lead change in the first 12 rallies in the deciding set.  Tied at 6-6, the Tigers went on a 4-0 scoring tear to open a 10-6 lead after a block each from Abigail Brunsing and Dale.
  • Trailing 11-7, the Trojans scored the next three points to trim DWU's lead to 11-10 after Viet's kill.
  • Brunsing made a kill followed by back-to-back kills by Dwight set up a match point for Dakota Wesleyan at 14-10.
  • M. Groft and Viet recorded a block as DSU saved one match point, trailing 14-11.  An attack error by the Trojans secured the match victory by the Tigers at 15-11.
  • DWU hit .161 in the fifth set (9 kills with 4 errors in 31 swings) compared to DSU .097 hitting percentage (7 kills with 4 errors in 31 attempts).
  • Four Trojan hitters recorded double digit in kills, packed by Viet with 16 kills and hit .341 in the match.  She added nine blocks.  Schroeder added career-highs 11 kills, .407 hitting percentage, and seven blocks.  Schell posted a double-double of 11 kills and 25 digs.  She registered five blocks.
  • M. Groft produced a triple-double for the third time this season for Dakota State.  She tallied 26 set assists, 15 digs, and smashed 13 kills.  She had four blocks.  Maddi Langerock had a double-double of 28 set assists and 16 digs.
  • P. Groft led the Trojans' defense with 32 digs, moving to second-all time in digs at Dakota State with 2,045 digs.  She surpassed Laura Lanoue for second all-time digs with 2,027 digs from 2005-08.  P. Groft added two service aces.
  • VonnaGail Schlechter added 19 digs for DSU.  Grage had seven kills and five blocks.
  • Dwight poured in 25 kills for Dakota Wesleyan.  Miller added 15 kills.  Mariah Gloe had a double-double of 11 kills and 20 digs.  Dale had 10 kills and three blocks.
  • Madeline Else contributed a match-high 62 set assists for DWU.  She added 18 digs to produce a double-double.
  • Hannah Reiff led Dakota Wesleyan's defense with 38 digs.  Callie Slagter added 21 digs.  Tya Weideman had 21 digs. 
  • DWU outhit DSU 73-64 in the match.  The Trojans hit .193 (20 errors in 228 swings), while the Tigers hit .167 (32 attack errors in 246 attempts).
  • A total of 254 digs combined by both teams were recorded in the match.  The Tigers had 134 digs compared to the Trojans 120 digs.
  • Dakota State had a season-high 17 blocks (1 solo, 32 assists).  Dakota Wesleyan had three blocks (6 block assists).
