SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) fell short of their first softball victory of the season Friday afternoon to host-team Dordt (Iowa) with a 6-5 walk-off victory. The two-day tournament is held at American State Bank Sports Complex.
Dakota State is 0-2 record after the first day of the tournament. Dordt, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, improved to 4-1 overall record.
The Trojans continue their action on Saturday on the second day of the tournament. DSU faces York (Neb.) at 12 p.m. and wraps up the tournament against Mount Marty (S.D.) at 4 p.m.
Dordt (Iowa) 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 – FINAL
- Both teams did not score in the first inning.
- Dakota State could not convert their scoring chances in the top second frame, despite leaving the runners full with Mason Usselman's single followed by Jadynn Alvarado's walk and Rebecca Hazlett's single.
- Dordt earned the first lead of the game in the bottom half of the second inning. Aurora Tyson drilled a double with two outs. Jessica Flaherty reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive error, allowing Tyson to score for a 1-0 lead.
- The Trojans answered with a run scored in the top third inning. Hannah McFarland hit a lead-off single. She advanced to third base after Mackenzie Sims' double, but was tagged out at home.
- Michelle Evdos followed up with an RBI double to score Sims as Dakota State tied the game at 1-1 in the top third.
- With bases loaded situation and two outs in the top fourth inning, Sims blasted a 2-RBI double to score Alexus Foster and Usselman as the Trojans earned a 3-1 lead.
- The Defenders produced three runs on six hits in the bottom fifth inning to regain their lead. Ella Koster had an RBI single followed by Lauren Steenstra's 2-RBI single to earn a 4-3 lead.
- Foster drilled a triple with one out in the top sixth inning for Dakota State. Sims hit an RBI single with two outs to score Foster as the Trojans tied the game at 4-4.
- Evdos followed up with an RBI single to score Sims as DSU grabbed a 5-4 lead.
- The Defenders tied the game in the bottom sixth inning at 5-5, caused by the Trojans' defensive miscue.
- Dakota State was unable to score in the top seventh inning after being tagged out at third base. Rosie Philop led off with a single. Olivia Peterson, pinch runner for Philop, advanced to second base caused by DU's wild pitch.
- Usselman hit a ground out to second base to allow Peterson to advance to third base for DSU in the top sixth. Peterson was tagged out at third base after an attempted bunt by Alvarado.
- Tyson reached on base by hit-by-pitch with one out in the bottom seventh for Dordt. Flaherty followed up with a single and advanced Tyson to second base.
- Brooklynn Cox hit a walk-off RBI double to score Tyson, securing the victory for the Defenders.
- Both teams tallied 11 hits in the game and two defensive errors.
- Sims paced the Trojans' offense attack by going 3-of-4 at the plate with two doubles, single and drove in three runs. Evdos added a double, single, and two RBIs. Philop added two singles.
- Foster had a triple and scored twice for DSU. Usselman and Hazlett each had a hit.
- Emma Groen, Ella Koster, and Flaherty each had two hits for Dordt. Chandler Schemper, Karli Olsen, Lauren Steenstra, Tyson, and Cox each had a hit.
- Steenstra collected two RBIs for the Defenders. Ivy Terpstra, Koster, Flaherty, and Cox each produced an RBI.
- DU left nine runners on base compared to DSU eight runners left on base.
- Usselman started the game in the pitching circle for Dakota State, working for four innings. She gave up four runs (one unearned) on six hits. Philop pitched two innings in relief and allowed an unearned run on three hits. Ortmeier (L, 0-2) took the setback after tossing for one out in the bottom seventh.
- Hailey Wilken pitched six innings for Dordt. She allowed five runs (two unearned) on 10 hits. Alex Kopaska (W, 1-0) earned the victory after tossing a scoreless seventh inning.
