Evdos set single-game doubles record in Trojans' 6-4 defeat to York (Neb.)

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Dakota State's (S.D.) Michelle Evdos set a new single-game record in doubles Saturday afternoon, despite falling short to York (Neb.) of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference 6-4 on the second day of the Dordt (Iowa) Dome Tournament.  The two-day tournament is being held at American State Bank Sports Complex.  The Trojans took a 4-1 lead before the Panthers scored five unanswered runs to secure the victory.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 0-3.  York finished the two-day tournament with a 2-2 record.

The Trojans wrap up the tournament Saturday at 4 p.m. versus in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.).

York (Neb.) 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL

  • Dakota State earned the first lead of the game in the top first inning.  Hannah McFarland led off with a walk and swiped to second base.
  • Mackenzie Sims drilled an RBI double to score McFarland for DSU 1-0 lead.  Evdos followed up with another RBI double to score Sims to balloon the Trojans' lead to 2-0 in the top first frame.
  • York answered with a run in the bottom half of the first inning.  Breanna Underwood led off with a walk.  Sariah Ayala reached safely on base caused by DSU's defensive error and advanced Underwood to third base.
  • Paige Chapman produced an RBI ground out to score Underwood as the Panthers trimmed the Trojans' lead to 2-1 in the bottom first.
  • DSU produced another two-run offense production in the top second inning.  Kiley Walker led off with a single.  Jadynn Alvarado recorded a sacrifice to advance Walker to second base.
  • McFarland followed up with a walk and swiped to second base after Walker was caught stealing at second base for Dakota State.  Sims added a single and advanced McFarland to third base.
  • Evdos blasted a 2-RBI double to score McFarland and Sims as the Trojans' lead grew to 4-1 in the top second inning.
  • York poured in four runs in the bottom second inning to overtake the lead from Dakota State.  Carla Martinez highlighted with a 2-RBI double with no outs as the Panthers trailed 4-3.
  • Erika McClung followed up with an RBI ground out and scored Martinez to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom second.
  • With Underwood on third base with two outs, the Trojans committed a wild pitch to allow Underwood to score home to take a 5-4 lead for York.
  • DSU was unable to convert their scoring chance to tie the game in the top third after leaving Hannah Feser on third base after a single and a stolen base (advanced to third after Alvarado reaching safe on base after York's defensive error).
  • The Panthers added a run in the bottom third inning after DSU's defensive error, extending their lead to 6-4.
  • Evdos hit her third double of the game in the top fourth frame with one out.  The Trojans were unable to convert the scoring opportunity. 
  • Sims hit a single with two outs in the top sixth inning for Dakota State.  Evdos followed up with a double, her fourth double of the game, and advanced Sims to third base.  On the same play, Sims was tagged out at home, ending the top sixth inning and trailed 6-4.
  • Evdos set the DSU softball single-game record for most doubles with four, breaking the previous record of three doubles held by three different former players (Xitlali Lopez vs. Jamestown, N.D., on Feb. 11, 2018; Harley Lindell vs. Valley City State, N.D., on April 25, 2015, and Brittany Hill vs. Mount Marty, S.D., on April 11, 2012).
  • Evdos moved into DSU's 'Top 10' all-time in doubles with 25 (currently tenth all-time doubles in school history).
  • York shut down Dakota State in the final inning, securing the victory.
  • The Trojans outhit the Panthers 10-7 in the game.  DSU committed four defensive errors compared to YC one defensive miscue.
  • DSU's Evdos finished the game by going perfect at the plate (4-of-4) with four doubles and drove in three runs.  Sims added two singles, a double, and an RBI.  McFarland recorded two walks.  Sims and McFarland each scored twice.
  • Grace Ortmeier, Feser, and Walker each added a hit for Dakota State.  Alexus Foster had a walk.
  • McFarland swiped two bases for the Trojans.  Ortmeier, Feser, Walker, and Alvarado each added a stolen base.
  • Martinez had a double and collected three RBIs for York.  Lauren Chapman added two hits and two runs scored.  Underwood, Ayala, and Tricia Trice each had a hit.
  • Lauren Chapman had tallied two hits and scored twice for the Panthers.  Underwood, Ayala, Kate Reyes and Lauren Chapman each registered a walk.
  • Ortmeier (L, 0-3) took the setback in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She allowed six runs (two unearned) on five hits in three innings.  Rosie Philop tossed three scoreless innings in relief, limiting the Panthers to two hits.
  • Kaitlyn Roe started the game for York, working for two innings and gave up four runs on six hits.  Kate Reyes (W, 1-0) earned the victory after tossing five scoreless innings in relief.  She limited the Trojans to four hits and recorded six strikeouts.
