SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Mount Marty (S.D.) used a pair of 6-run innings explosion Saturday afternoon, defeating Dakota State (S.D.) 12-5 to close out the two-day Dordt (Iowa) Dome Tournament season-opening weekend. The tournament was being played at American State Bank Sports Complex.
Dakota State fell to 0-4 overall record. Mount Marty lifted their overall record to 4-0.
The Trojans return to American State Bank Sports Complex next weekend for another four-game slate in the Dordt Dome Tournament. The Trojans face Northwestern (Iowa) and College of Saint Mary (Neb.) Friday, followed by Morningside (Iowa) and Dordt next Saturday.
Mount Marty (S.D.) 12, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 – FINAL
- After a scoreless first inning, Mount Marty poured in six runs in the top second inning. With bases loaded situation and no outs, Elisabeth McGill recorded an RBI walk to grab a 1-0 lead for MMU.
- Melissa Hagedorn followed up with a 2-RBI single as the Lancers' lead grew to 3-0. Adrian Schoby added an RBI single to make it 4-0 in favor of Mount Marty.
- Kayleen Jacinto and Autumn Porter each added an RBI as the Lancers ballooned their lead to 6-0 in the bottom second.
- Dakota State snapped their scoring drought with three runs in the bottom third inning. Hannah McFarland led off with a walk. Michelle Evdos hit a single with one out and advanced McFarland to third base (Evdos advanced to second base on the same play).
- Carrington Entringer produced an RBI double to score McFarland as the Trojans trailed 6-1 in the bottom third inning (Evdos advanced to third base).
- The Lancers committed a wild pitch, allowing Evdos to score (DSU trailed 6-2) and Entringer to third base. Grace Ortmeier hit an RBI ground out to score Entringer as the Trojans cut their deficit to 6-3.
- Lilinoe Nihi ignited the Lancers with another 6-run production in the top fifth inning with an RBI double for a 7-3 lead. McGill added an RBI single followed by Sarah Hart's RBI double and Raegan Harper's RBI single to make it 10-3 in favor of Mount Marty.
- Sydney Kotz and Porter each added an RBI to widen MMU's lead to 12-3 in the top fifth.
- Dakota State extended the game into the sixth inning after scoring twice in the bottom fifth. Sims led off with a walk and advanced to second after MMU's wild pitch. Evdos followed up with a single to advance Sims to third base.
- Sims scored home on Lancers' wild pitch, trailing 12-4 for DSU (Evdos advanced to third base). Mount Marty committed another wild pitch, allowing Evdos to score as the Trojans cut the Lancers' lead to 12-5.
- Both teams did not score in the final two innings, securing the victory for the Lancers.
- The Lancers outhit the Trojans 15-5 in the game.
- Evdos led the Trojans' offense with two singles and scored twice. Entringer added a double, run, and an RBI. Mason Usselman had a single. Ortmeier produced an RBI.
- McFarland registered two walks for Dakota State. Sims and Usselman each added a walk.
- Nihi finished the game with two doubles, a single, and drove in a run for MMU. Sami Noble and Ella Ray each added two hits. McGill and Hagedorn each had a hit and two RBIs.
- Kayleen Jacinto, Kotz, Sarah Hart, Harper, and Schoby each had a hit and an RBI.
- Usselman (L, 0-1) worked for five innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State. She allowed nine runs on 11 hits. Rosie Philop tossed two innings in relief, giving up three runs on four hits.
- Regan Garry started the game after working for two innings, yielding the Trojans to one hit. Kylee McDaniel and Hannah Keith combined for three innings in relief and gave up five runs on three hits. Makayla Graunke pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
