DSU falls short in softball slugfest with College of Saint Mary (Neb.)

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) poured in a season-high 13 runs in the second game of the Dordt (Iowa) Dome Tournament Friday evening, falling short in a slugfest with another foe from the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  College of Saint Mary rallied back for a 15-13 victory over the Trojans, which featured a combined 31 hits in the game.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 0-6.  College of Saint Mary improved to 2-5 overall record.

The Trojans seek for their first win of the season as they play another two-game slate Saturday.  DSU plays Morningside (Iowa) at 2 p.m. and closes out the tournament against the host-team Dordt at 4 p.m.

College of Saint Mary (Neb.) 15, Dakota State (S.D.) 13 – FINAL

  • Dakota State grabbed their first lead of the game in the bottom first frame, thanks to Alexus Foster's triple to right field.  Michelle Evdos produced an RBI single to score Foster to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
  • Rosie Philop followed up with a single to advance Evdos to third base.  With two outs, Carrington Entringer hit an RBI single to score Evdos to extend DSU's lead to 2-0 in the bottom first frame.
  • College of Saint Mary plated four runs in the top second inning to overtake the lead from Dakota State.  Sydney Griffin hit a 2-RBI single, while Izzy Monzon and Macy Homes each added an RBI single to take a 4-2 lead.
  • DSU answered with three runs in the bottom half of the second inning for the second lead change.  Rebecca Hazlett led off with a double.  Olivia Peterson followed up with an RBI single to score Hazlett as the Trojans trailed 4-3.
  • With Hannah McFarland on first base with two outs, the Trojans added two more runs in the bottom second.  Evdos drilled an RBI double to score McFarland followed by Rosie Philop's RBI single to score Evdos as Dakota State led 5-4.
  • The third lead change occurred in the top third inning after Morgan Ethen hit a 2-run home run to give the Flames a 6-5 lead.
  • CSM extended their lead to 7-5 after Homes' solo home run in the top fourth frame.
  • Dakota State rallied back in the bottom fifth inning after plating three runs for the fourth lead change.  Evdos led off with a double.  Philop hit an RBI single to score Evdos as the Trojans cut CSM's lead to 7-6.
  • Entringer hit a double with one out to advance Philop to third base for Dakota State in the bottom fifth.  Hannah Feser produced an RBI sacrifice fly to score Philop to knot the game at 7-7 (Entringer advanced to third base).
  • After a pitching change by the Flames, Hazlett hit an RBI single to score Entringer as DSU regained their lead at 8-7 in the bottom fifth.
  • College of Saint Mary exploded for eight runs in the top sixth inning for the fifth lead change of the game.  The Flames capped the eight-run production with a 3-run home run from Ethen to balloon their lead to 15-8.
  • DSU would answer five runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning.  With bases loaded situation and one out, Roanna Riggins produced a 2-RBI single to score Evdos and Foster as the Trojans cut CSM's lead to 15-10.
  • The Trojans added two runs caused by DSU's defensive error, trailing 15-12 in the bottom sixth.  Hazlett followed up with an RBI double as the Trojans reduced their deficit to 15-13.
  • Dakota State was unable to score in the final inning, despite leaving a runner on third base when the game ended.  Foster hit a single and advanced to second base.  She advanced to third base after Evdos' ground out.
  • DSU outhit CSM 16-15 in the game.  The Trojans left seven runners on base compared to the Flames four runners left on base.
  • Evdos led the Trojans' offense attack with three doubles, single and drove in two runs.  She scored four runs in the game.  Philop added three hits and two RBIs. 
  • Hazlett went 3-of-4 at the plate with two doubles, a single, and an RBI for DSU.  Entringer added a double, single and scored twice.  Foster had a triple, single and scored two times.  Riggins had a hit and two RBIs. 
  • Ethen was 4-of-4 at the plate with two home runs, two singles and tallied five RBIs for College of Saint Mary.  Homes added a home run, single, and two RBIs.  Monzon and Megan Garcia each added two hits.
  • Grace Ortmeier (L, 0-4) took the loss after tossing three innings in the pitching circle for Dakota State.  She allowed six runs on six hits.  Mason Usselman worked for 2 2/3 innings in relief, while Philop pitched 1 1/3 innings. 
  • Garcia started the game after tossing 4 2/3 innings for the Flames.  She allowed eight runs on 11 hits.  Daisy Lowther (W, 1-2) earned the victory after working for 2 1/3 innings in relief.  She gave up five runs (three unearned runs) on five hits.
