Morningside (Iowa) shut down Dakota State (S.D.) in softball

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Morningside (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference scored in the final five innings of the game to shut down Dakota State (S.D.) 10-0 in six innings Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Dordt (Iowa) Dome Tournament.  The dome tournament is being held at American State Bank Sports Complex.

The Trojans fell to 0-7 overall record, while the Mustangs improved to 5-3 overall record.

DSU closes out the tournament against host-team Dordt (Iowa) at 4 p.m.

Morningside (Iowa) 10, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 – FINAL/6 innings

  • Dakota State was unable to score in the first inning after Michelle Evdos' walk and swiped to second base.  Morningside left two runners on base in the bottom half of the first inning, despite a double from Mykel Ann Gray.
  • Ellie Cropley produced an RBI single in the bottom second to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead.  MU added a pair of runs caused by DSU's defensive errors, extending their lead to 3-0.
  • Mackenna Sidzyik highlighted the bottom third inning with an RBI triple as Morningside ballooned their lead to 4-0.  Katie Murphy followed up with an RBI ground out to score Sidzyik for a 5-0 MU lead.
  • The Mustangs made it 6-0 in the bottom fourth after Morgan Nixon's RBI single.
  • Hannah Feser and Olivia Peterson each recorded a walk in the top fifth frame and could not convert their scoring chances for DSU.
  • Murphy drilled an RBI double in the bottom fifth to make it 7-0 in favor of the Mustangs.
  • Kennedee Jones closed the game in the bottom sixth after blasting a 3-run home run to secure the victory.
  • Both teams left six runners on base in the game.
  • Evdos and Rosie Philop each recorded two walks for Dakota State.  Carrington Entringer, Feser and Peterson each added a walk.  Entringer and Evdos each swiped one base.
  • Jones led the Mustangs with a home run and three RBIs.  Nixon had three hits and an RBI.  Gray and  Sidzyik each recorded two hits.  Murphy had a double and two RBIs.
  • Mason Usselman (L, 0-2) took the setback in the pitching circle for DSU, giving up three runs (two unearned) on three hits in 1 2/3 innings of work.  Grace Ortmeier and Philop each worked in relief.
  • Jenna Shradski (W, 1-0) tossed a complete game victory for the Mustangs.  She allowed seven walks and registered four strikeouts.
