Defenders rally back to defeat Trojans in softball dome tournament finale

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – Dakota State (S.D.) was unable to take advantage of their 3-0 fast start after the top first inning Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Dordt (Iowa) Dome Tournament at American State Bank Sports Complex.  The Defenders rallied back with seven unanswered runs and held off the Trojans 7-4.

DSU dropped their overall record to 0-8.  Dordt, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, lifted their overall record to 10-2 and took their second meeting with DSU within a week (Dordt won in 6-5 walk-off victory last week in the first dome tournament.

Dakota State continues their action next weekend as they seek their first win of the season.  The Trojans play another four-game tournament slate, hosted by Friends (Kan.) in Wichita, Kan.  DSU plays MidAmerican Nazarene (Kan.) and Concordia (Neb.) on Friday, followed by another pair of contests next Saturday versus Peru State (Neb.) and host-team Friends.

Dordt (Iowa) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 – FINAL

  • Dakota State ignited the game with a three-run production in the top first frame.  Hannah McFarland led off with a walk.  Carrington Entringer reached safely on base caused by Defenders' defensive miscue to advance McFarland to second base.
  • Michelle Evdos followed up with a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU in the top first.  Rosie Philop produced an RBI ground out to score McFarland to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
  • Grace Ortmeier was hit-by-pitch to set up a bases loaded situation for the second time in the top first frame.  Jacquelyn Folkers recorded an RBI walk to score Entringer as Dakota State ballooned their lead to 2-0.
  • Jadynn Alvardo produced an RBI single to score Evdos to make it 3-0 in favor of the Trojans in the top first inning.
  • Dordt answered with a run in the bottom half of the first inning.  Chandler Schemper was hit-by-pitch to lead off and swiped to second base.
  • Emma Groen hit an RBI single to score Schemper as the Defenders trim the Trojans' lead to 3-1 in the bottom first.
  • The Defenders produced three RBI singles from Groen, Ella Koster, and Aurora Tyson, overtaking the lead from the Trojans at 4-3.
  • Groen hit a 2-RBI double followed by Koster's RBI single in the bottom sixth inning to balloon Dordt's lead to 7-3.
  • McFarland led the top seventh inning with a walk for the Trojans, but was forced out on second base after Entringer fielder's choice.  Entringer swiped to second base, followed by another stolen base to third base.
  • Evdos hit an RBI single to score Entringer as the Trojans snapped their scoring drought, trailing 7-4 in the top seventh.
  • DSU could not convert their scoring changes as Dordt secured the victory.
  • Dordt outhit Dakota State 12-5 in the game.  The Defenders left nine runners on base compared to the Trojans eight runners left on base.
  • Entringer went 2-of-3 at the plate with two singles and scored twice for Dakota State.  She swiped two bases.  Evdos had a single, RBI, and walk.  Philop and Alvarado each added a single and an RBI.
  • McFarland recorded four walks in the game for the Trojans, tying the single-game record for most walks with Jeny Garst versus Minot State (N.D.) in April 2005.  Folkers had an RBI and a walk.
  • Groen led the Defenders with a double, two singles, and drove in four runs.  Koster added four hits and two RBIs.  Schemper had two singles and scored three times.  Tyson had two singles and an RBI. 
  • Maycee Bricker (L, 0-2) took the defeat after working for three innings in the pitching circle for DSU.  She allowed four runs on seven hits and registered four strikeouts.  Mason Usselman pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, giving up three runs on three hits.  Philop worked for two shutout outs in relief with two strikeouts.
  • Taylor Knaack started the game for one-plus inning for Dordt.  She gave up three runs (one unearned) on two hits and allowed four walks.  Abby Kraemer (W, 3-2) earned the victory after tossing six innings in relief.  She yielded the Trojans to one run on three hits.  She recorded seven strikeouts.
